Replacing him is his son Chris. Top stories about the deaf: The New Zealand sign language is changing. And it has nothing to do with new words coming up. It is because the sign language is including Maori gestures. More deaf Maori people have been using their own gestures and the rest of the deaf have been picking it up. St Rita School for the Deaf has been challenged to raise $32,500 to match this same $32,500 donated by a local Cincinnati businessman. Why that donation. The son of businessman's girl friend is deaf and attends the school. Brian Fruits has been praised by the National Association of the Deaf for his contributions to the Deaf Community in Wisconsin as well as for his involvement as an officer with a national deaf basketball group. Cost of accommodating the deaf in a workplace? It is between just $1 and $500. Says who? Mark Wafer, who is hard of hearing, and knows what discrimination is all about. He owns seven Tim Hortons franchises in the Toronto area and a good number of his employees are deaf. Federal contractors have been instructed by the Department of Labor to give hiring preferences to the deaf and the disabled because of the tightening of a section in the federal Rehabilitation Act. .............................................................. People seem to be speaking quicker and quicker all the time.  The speeds of the anchors delivering the nightly news have many times been clocked at over 300 words per minute.  Realtime captioners try to keep up with these speakers.  Although it is not always possible, they attempt to give a verbatim account of what is being said. If the speaker is speaking at 300 words per minute and the captioner's top speed is 225, something has to give.  There may be times when it becomes necessary to drop or omit some relatively unimportant word or to paraphrase a thought. One of the most important reasons for captioners to work on developing their speed is that the faster the captioner writes, the closer to verbatim the captioning output will be.
