Top stories about the deaf:
Deaf West's Broadway production of Spring Awakening has dedicated its revived play to the victims of
the Orlando tragedy.
The Gifu Prefecture in Japan reached agreement
with deaf agencies on emergency communication
needs in case of emergencies and disasters.
A lawsuit has been filed in Arizona, saying that
Deaf 911 system is inadequate, in that messages
reach the emergency dispatch center through a
third party, thus wasting valuable emergency
response time.
Cuba is sort of a third-world nation - but
its doctors have performed 360 CI operations.
This was the big story the Cuban press wanted
to tell the world.
There is a problem that surfaced at St. John's University in Newfoundland. The university
requires all students, deaf included, to take an audio English exam. Deaf students
filed protests with this requirement.
The university is not willing to make
adjustments to accommodate deaf students.

HARD TO READ HEARING FACES
Is it hard to read a hearing face? A hearing person
may be a snob, or very talkative or something.
A deaf person may often misread the hearing face
not knowing who he really is.
That hearing person may be really very shy and
other hearing people knows that, yet deaf person
did not realize it!

A DEAF INVENTOR IN FLORIDA
Dan Didrick, of Florida, is a deaf inventor.
He knows how to build many things as a craftsman.
One day he saw his deaf friend without a
finger and knew he could not sign ASL very
well without full five fingers on both hands.
Didrick invented an artificial finger
for the deaf man and won a US patent for it.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Our nation experienced more great tragedies this week, one of them
being the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. Many, many people
from all walks of life were affected by the tragic events that took
place in Florida. We are beginning to hear the names of heroes and
people who risked their lives to save others, and their contributions
are being recognized.
As the sad and dreadful details of these events continued to emerge,
news coverage around the world was focused on a nightclub in Orlando.
We are so grateful for those who responded to this emergency and
helped those in need.
As we reflect on the occurrences of these past few days, we also
might want to think about the contribution that captioners across the
country made in response to the horrific massacre and other deadly
events. They provided access to the millions of Americans who
required captioning in order to fully understand what was taking
place.
Thank you to those captioners who went above and beyond to write with
tears streaming down their faces, lumps in their throats, and heavy
hearts as they provided continuous coverage of these events. They
stories that became too difficult for them to deal with. They may never know whose lives they touched.

firm Morgan Stanley will accept relay calls from
deaf clients.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Disney is upset about the Mickey Mouse scam in
China. Street performers, not affiliated with
Disney, have been begging for money after
doing street skits. Disney is saying that three
such performers are deaf and are using their
deafness as reason to get money from tourists!
These tourists give money, thinking these
street performers were part of the Disney group.
