Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Katherine Lois Smith,
Louisiana, that departed us. She helped found the SSP program
for the deaf/blind in her community, and also founded the
Contraband Bayou Deaf Club.
Top stories about the deaf:
ZeniPower mercury-free hearing aid batteries can
be defective. This was the warning issued by an
activist in Australia!
The Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education
in Indiana is embarking on a new program to help
deaf children obtain hearing aids.
The Uganda Equal Opportunities Commission has
been cracking down on those that discriminate
against the disabled and the deaf.
A 75-year old deaf man was refused admittance
to a hospital in Saskatchewan. Reason was
lapsed medical card. And because of no treatment
he died. The family is furious.
Deaf and Dumb is considered an obsolete
language in Michigan. This is what the
state House voted to have it replaced
with hard of hearing. Unfortunately for
the rest of the world, this language
is still active, and is not obsolete.

HAND GESTURES VERY IMPORTANT FOR ALL DEAF
There are some oral deaf that do not understand
simple gestures.
There was a report from University of Chicago
that said hand gestures help oral children learn
better English.
Is Hand Gestures same as Sign Language?

A BAD DIET BET MISUNDERSTANDING
At a hearing college many years ago a deaf student
was very fat.
His hearing friends begged him to go on diet and to
watch what he eats. He refused.
They made a bet with him, a lot of money, that he
has to lose weight to win the bet.
The hearing students told him he must lose 50
pounds. The deaf student, lipread the words and
thought it was 15 pounds.
There was almost a big fight because the
deaf student refused to pay off the bet over
a misunderstood word!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
trying to translate words into signs to student with minimal English
skills. And having to prompt this same attention deficiency disorder
student into paying closer attention to signs that are difficult
to follow!
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
One thing that many captioning viewers take for granted is the caption placement on the screen; that is, until the captioning blocks a person's face or piece of information that they want to see.
Unfortunately, for much of the realtime captioning that takes place in the U.S., the captioner is not able to see the screen. They may be captioning from an audio feed only.
Captions are limited to 32 characters across and 15 lines from top to bottom. It used to be that all realtime captioning was three lines at the bottom. Then the television stations started including bigger and more frequent graphics at the bottom, and captioners started trying to move the captions around.
Some TV broadcasters tell the captioners specifically where they want the captions. For a sports broadcast, they may say they want two lines at the top of the screen. They may indicate exactly where the left and right margins should be.
Also, some television control room operators move the captions around, independent of the captioner. They may attempt to move the captions away from the graphics.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
trying to chat with another deaf person who keeps
on looking away from you
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
Kaiser has a great reputation for providing interpreters
for its deaf patients - hence this shocker, that this
giant health care institution was slapped with a lawsuit.
A deaf patient entered the emergency room of a Kaiser
hospital and asked for an interpreter and was refused!
This lawsuit has been filed.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
If a person thinks he is deaf, then he is deaf; and if
another person thinks he is hearing, then he is hearing?
Is it that so? Well, Yale University researchers are
saying that senior citizens who fell for that thinking trap would show
more of hearing losses as opposed to those that
thought "positively".
This report was published in a recent edition of the Journal of
Gerontology: Psychological Sciences.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network
scolded the National Relay Service for being "helpless"
when floods struck the Queensland territory. It was so
bad that Telstra, another Australian agency, had to
step in and help out.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
A past Undercover Boss TV series featured
Rocket Fizz chain in California. One of
the Rocket Fizz employees said she attended
CSUN, but wants to go back to college to
learn sign language.
Her comment was not specific. To learn
sign language to become:
an interpreter
or
a teacher of the deaf
or
becoming a sign language teacher
or
what?
