After a summer of much activity at the original Scranton State School for the Deaf, closed by the state but reorganized under the auspices of Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, he has this to say: We started with 78 students and 4 more are on the way; 13 families are in our parent- infant program. Also I have to say that our staff have been incredible in creating this new school, working on this 24/7 since June. But the looks on faces of the Scranton students on the first day of school made all efforts worthwhile. And we are thrilled so many students returned after the turmoil. I heard rumors of mass departures but it didn't happen. Don now splits his time between Pittsburgh and Scranton, supervising both schools. .. From time to time, reporters from mass media (Washington Post, Washington City Paper, USA Today, ESPN, and other local newspapers, have contacted DeafDigest for questions on deaf-related issues. Well, USA Today ran a piece on deaf athletes on college teams, and mentioned DeafDigest as the source. Almost instantly, DeafDigest was also mentioned in the CEC news sweep-Council for Exceptional Children (the very large North American professional special education organization). The Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, which had been without executive director, finally found one. It is Virginia L. Moore, who simply moves up from deputy executive director. The interpreter was not certified by the RID; he was a school teacher, moonlighting as an interpreter during his free moments. The rationale was that a moonlighting interpreter was much cheaper than a RID-certified interpreter. Good idea? No way! The class was a disaster, and the lecturer, who knew sign language often had to interrupt the interpreter to clean up his errors! Taming Serena Williams? Yes, Michael Baruch, could. He is deaf, a graduate from NTID/RIT, and has been officiating tennis matches for 23 years. In fact he spent this week officiating a pro tennis tournament in Tulsa. He seems to be the only deaf tennis official that DeafDigest knows of. He has done US Open, Canadian Open and other big tournaments in the past. Not any more as he prefers to focus on smaller, lower level junior, collegiate and professional tournaments. Two questions. Q. Have any tennis players blown up at him? A. Yes, in foreign languages! Q. Did he play tennis at NTID/RIT? A. No, but he is a late bloomer to this sport! REALISTIC OR UNREALISTIC JOB AMBITIONS DeafDigest editor recently made the acquaintance of a deaf person that earned a MBA in marketing. Is that deaf person employed in the marketing field? No, that deaf person works with computers. This makes DeafDigest editor wonder if certain job aspirations could be unrealistic? Yes, we all know this adage - the deaf could do anything except to hear. DEAF ISSUES (short series; based on comments by educators and deaf service professionals) when counselors get involved with the lives of their deaf students, it creates the impression that it is all what counselors of the deaf do because counselors of hearing students do not get involved with their lives (series to continue until it runs out) WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being asked: is it the first time you interpreted for your deaf client? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series When you are working with a CART provider in a classroom, one thing you need to remember is that CART providers do not know everything about all subjects. They don't have the knowledge of the instructor about the subject. All of the unusual terms, words, and names that come up in a class need to be added to a CART provider's computer dictionary in order for them to translate properly. If CART providers are unfamiliar with names or terms, they may attempt to fingerspell them, but if the CART provider doesn't know how the words are spelled, the words will probably not come up on the screen correctly. When handouts are being passed out in a class, sometimes the CART provider is skipped, almost as if everyone just assumes that the CART provider already knows everything about the course. Hot DeafNews boring, but important! Hard of hearing theatrical lovers of Edinburg, Scotland, may be out of luck when attending shows. It was learned that a low percentage of theaters are outfitted with induction loops that would allow their hearing aids to pick up stuff that is said on the stage. .. The Deaf and the Law If a deaf husband and deaf wife go through mediation in a divorce case, make sure interpreters are provided. In one case, the husband signed papers to waive his rights to an interpreter, whereas the wife refused to sign papers. The court would not provide interpreters for a mediation case but only for criminal cases. The ruling in the mediation case (without interpreters) went against both of them. The wife, not giving up, hired an attorney to reverse the mediator's decision in that case. Bottom line - do not sign papers, but to hire an attorney if the courts refuse your request for an interpreter. .. DeafADA Issue of the Week: A college refused to provide CART services for a deaf student. The college argued that ADA does not require CART if a reasonable alternative is offered. Reasonable alternatives the college suggested was volunteer note takers and volunteer interpreters! Additionally the college argued the student was already getting good grades on classes without CART in the past. .. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Knowledge and Abilities Desired: - Thorough familiarity with the American Deaf culture and issues facing Deaf and Deaf-Blind consumers is required. - Full knowledge of the special needs and issues of those who are Hard of Hearing. - An understanding of the current issues related to Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing consumers accessing public and social services, in addition to familiarity with laws and regulations pertaining to Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing consumers. - Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting concepts and practices, knowledge of personnel management practices and knowledge of the social service delivery system. - Proven ability/skills with grant writing. Minimum Qualifications/Required Skills: - A Bachelor's degree in Social Services, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred - Experience in providing social services to the Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing (3 years) with supervisory experience (1 year) - Fluency in American Sign Language - Good communication skills including presentations and report writing.
