Top stories about the deaf:
Marlee Matlin and Camryn Manheim will be
leaving the Deaf West Theatre's play -
Spring Awakening on January 10, 2016. For
the remainder of the play, the replacements
are Alexandria Wailes and Elizabeth Greene.
The announcement of the new superintendent of
Tennessee School for the Deaf will be made
around the middle of May. Current superintendent
Alan Mealka is retiring next month.
Deaf activists in the Philippines are complaining
that the national census do not address the
needs of the deaf. They are afraid that the
"official" census count of the deaf will be
just guesswork!
A deaf wrestler from a high school in Michigan
won his appeal to have an interpreter on the
mat, next to his coach, during meets. He argued
that it was unfair for hearing wrestlers to hear
coaching instructions while he couldn't.
Deaf Women Association of Nigeria has asked
the National Assembly to give full rights
for deaf women.

DEAF HARD HATS
DeafDigest editor was walking around a construction
site in Washington, DC and was surprised.
Two deaf hardhats were communicating with each other
in ASL.
Not too many deaf people work in construction - because
it is hard work, not an easy job.

RUDE HEARING FRIENDS
A deaf teenager and her hearing friends were
watching a captioned TV program.
One of the hearing teenagers said he didn't like
watching a program with captions. Another friend
turned off the captions - without asking the
deaf teenager about it.
It ruined the deaf teenager's fun moments with
her hearing friends!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
A comment like this -
I guess you learn a lot about the topic from interpreting the
professor's lecture
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
When people have talked to me about the mistakes of broadcast
captioners or CART captioners, one thing some people have not taken
into consideration is the speed of the speakers. How fast someone
talks can drastically affect the accuracy of realtime translation.
When someone is learning steno, after completing the steno theory,
the first test a court reporting student takes is usually at 60 words
a minute. In order to finish school, most court reporting schools
require speeds of 225 words per minute or higher. It can take two,
three, or more years for a steno student to increase his or her
writing speed from 60 to 225 words per minute.
After a student has completed school and has passed whatever
certification tests are required, that person is now faced with how
fast some people actually talk in the "real world." There are people
who at times speak at speeds around 300 words a minute.
All court reporters, broadcast captioners, and CART captioners must
continually try to increase their speed on the steno machine, but
what people should understand is that the faster someone is speaking,
the more mistakes may be made by realtime captioners.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
hearing people not understanding why the deaf focus on
their lips!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

Could hearing attorneys get away without using an
interpreter by asking client's family members to
interpret for him or to pass notes back and forth?
Simple answer - no!

A surprise visitor on the NTID campus few days ago was
President Bill Clinton.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
the Old Kentish Sign Language may become extinct some day.
What is the big deal? Well, the roots of the ASL that we
use, came from British's Old Kentish Sign Language.
Why is it dying? Because the British Sign Language is
"killing" it off!
This issue was raised by the online linguistics journal
Ethnologue, the Unesco Atlas of the World's Languages
in Danger and the conservation biologist Professor William
Sutherland, himself not deaf.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Captioning advocates are complaining that ASL-only videos, which lack captions,
are unfair to the deaf that do not
use ASL.
Truth is that installing captions
on ASL-only videos is painfully
time-consuming - a matter of hours of
work to do a few minute video!
It is a no-win situation.
