Helene Oppenheimer, not deaf, is a sculptor in
Southern California. Her work focuses on the disabled, especially the deaf. Over the years she has fashioned over 40 sign language sculptures. A big reason for her interest in the deaf is because of deafness that have
surrounded her - a husband who is an interpreter,
a handyman who is deaf and a neighbor who is deaf.

What are the hot issues among interpreters? State
certification issues - especially in Michigan
and in Washington, DC. Another is interpreters needing

were bandied around at the recent RID Conference.
- Sunday August 14th
The Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services, Farmington, Michigan,
is hoping to launch the nation's 18th deaf senior citizens
housing unit. This agency is now busy raising funds to make
this venture possible.
- Monday August 15th
Christine J Willette, Rothschild, Wisconsin, is probably
the most important person we never heard of. She was elected
as director of the National Court Reporters Association.
This group is responsible for standards that real-time
and CART captioners follow so that we, the deaf, could
easily read the captions on the screen.
- Tuesday August 16th
A New York judge turned down the request by New York City government to take down all of its
15,000 alarm boxes. Reason is that it would prevent
the deaf from using the box in case of emergencies.
- Wednesday August 17th
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission is asking the deaf for their comments on
captions with focus on captioning errors.

COMPARING PAST ORAL STORIES
DeafDigest editor, himself a graduate from a deaf oral
school had a long chat with a friend, himself a graduate
of another deaf oral school.
What did they talk about? Laughing and crying over
these "horrible" days at oral schools. Examples were
teachers hitting signing students' hands with rulers
punishing signers by not letting them go on field trips;
forcing them to lipread hearing speakers at school
assemblies, forced to give oral speeches at
school assemblies, etc, etc.
Many of us laugh over our past oral days, but some
still cry over these days. Very sad.

COMPLAINING ABOUT HIGH SALARIES

earn high salaries.
They earn high salaries because they are very good at
interpreting.
Best doctors, best attorneys, best accountants, etc all
earn high salaries.
If salaries are low, we, the deaf, may be stuck with
lousy interpreting services!

AN UNUSUAL DEAF-OWNED RESTAURANT IN BUDA
Buda is a small town within easy driving distance of
Austin, Texas. This town advertises itself as the
Outdoor Capital Of Texas.
There is an unusual restaurant in Buda. The name of
the restaurant - ViUDA Bistro is unusual. The arrangement
is unusual in that this restaurant shares space with a
hearing-owned breakfast/lunch place. The restaurant
hours is unusual in that it is open only on weekends.
And one recent dish is unusual - Yak meat. And the name
of one dish is unusual - The Corruption.
So far it is doing pretty good. Paul Rutkowski, a former
deaf relay executive, owns it, and the deaf chef is Kurt
Ramborger, a veteran of 17 years in the restaurant business.
The staff - sous chef, line cook and a dishwasher are
all deaf.
A DEAF SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN DURING THE DEPRESSION
During the Roaring Twenties, there was a successful businessman
in a small town, who was deaf.
Alfred Granger, a deaf man, was a peanut vendor in Clyde, Ohio, a small town.
Alfred could not speak but was able to gesture to communicate
with his customers that wanted to purchase freshly-roasted
peanuts.
A small book is being written in his honor.

A NEW PRIEST FOR THE DEAF IN MILWAUKEE
There are just about 10 deaf priests that serve the
deaf. The latest one is a new one - Father Christopher Klusman,
who splits his time between the St. Roman Catholic Church
in Milwaukee and a new ministry he is trying to establish.
This position poses challenges not because he is deaf
but because of the scandal that practically destroyed
St John's School for the Deaf.
So far he has made a great impression on the deaf in
the area.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
Some hearing people believe that if they shout, and make a lot of gestures, they can make themselves
understood without help of an interpreter!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As you are considering whether to use remote CART or onsite CART in a
high school or university setting, you will find that remote CART
also has many advantages.
For remote CART, the student would bring a laptop into the classroom
and connect via the Internet with a CART provider who is located at
some other location. There would be a microphone or microphones in
the classroom so that the CART provider could hear what was going on
over a phone line or Internet connection.
One of the advantages of remote CART is that it is sometimes more
affordable because you do not have the travel time and setup involved
as you would with onsite CART.
If a student is moving from classroom to classroom, sometimes remote
CART is easier because the CART provider does not have to move all of
the CART equipment from one location to another location. Everything
onsite is done by the student, so there is no outside person involved
onsite.
Another advantage is if you do not have an experienced CART provider
in your area, any CART provider anywhere in the country could cover
the assignment. It could be especially helpful in a rural area where
there are no CART providers.
THESE CASTLE ART SLEUTHS
The way it is in the art world, artists become more famous dead than alive.
Seems the hottest dead artist right now is James Castle,
who passed away in 1977. He never aspired for a big time
career in art; he was merely content to do a lot of doodling
on things in a house - table, chair, doors, etc - on "junk"
paper and "junk" drawing material.
Oh, Castle, who attended Idaho School for the Deaf and
Blind, never learned to read or write and lived out his
78 years in isolation. While he was deaf he never made friends
in the deaf community.
Right now the sleuths, at the Fogg Museum's Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies on the campus of
Harvard University, are studying how Castle was able to do
the work that he did on "junk" stuff.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED
There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.
True or false?
DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:
A lonely deaf man, lived all his life in Cooperstown, NY
after graduating from New York State School for the Deaf.
Since the Baseball Hall of Fame is located in Cooperstown,
quite a few deaf baseball fans visit the museum every year.
During a quiet night in the winter time, a deaf couple,
after visiting the baseball museum, went to a restaurant
for dinner. Town locals told the lonely deaf man that
a deaf couple was dining in the restaurant. Suddenly
he entered the restaurant, located the dining couple,
and without as much as introducing himself, sat down
and jumped into the conversation!

Team of researchers from Vanderbilt University Australia's University of Sydney is saying that
hearing people that take Vitamin A and E Supplements
may be able to prolong their hearing into their
senior citizen years.

The Deaf and the Law:
An agency did not return the results of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment exam that a classroom
interpreter took. The angry interpreter filed a lawsuit
and won a monetary award. It compensated for the
loss of interpreting job and loss of income because of
the results the agency would not furnish.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
If you are deaf and wish to emigrate to Australia, don't even
think of trying. Making the newspapers was the story of a family
denied visa application to live in Australia. Reason was one of
the children was deaf.
Keep in mind that Australia denied visas for a group of
visiting deaf foreigners wanting to attend the World Federation
of the Deaf some time back.
We always thought Australia was one of these free nations of
the world?

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Doing dental work with high speed tools may be hazardous
for hearing dentists, but not for deaf dentists!
Noise generated by these tools may cause deafness among
some of the hearing dentists. Not so with the already-deaf
dentists.
This conclusion was reached by the Oregon Health & Science
University and the School of Dentistry.
It is not a problem with DeafDigest's personal dentist,
for Dr. Steven Rattner is deaf. So is his dental associate
Bo A. Byun.

Overall Purpose:
To ensure students at the New York School for the Deaf receive a
rigorous education that maximizes their academic success in all
subject areas.
General Qualifications:
- Fluent in ASL
- Fluent in English
- Knowledge of bilingual philosophy and application in the
classroom

- Ability to structure time and management of multiple

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinics Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Program is seeking a full time professional to conduct individual, group, and family therapeutic skills sessions with participants involved in a program serving deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children. All work is done under the direct supervision of a licensed mental health professional. Clients are between the ages 5-22 with mental health and behavioral concerns.
This is a collaborative program of VOA-MN Mental Health Clinics and the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD). The DHH IMPACT Program is located on the campus of MSAD in Faribault, MN. This position is fulltime during the academic year with summers off.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's Level mental health practitioner
- Proficiency in ASL and strong knowledge of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deafblind culture
- Strong communication and writing skills
- Strong computer skills
- Basic math skills
- Ability to work with a diverse population of individuals by using tact, diplomacy, and flexibility
- Direct experience in programming for children with mental health disorders is preferred.

housing unit. This agency is now busy raising funds to make

Christine J Willette, Rothschild, Wisconsin, is probably
the most important person we never heard of. She was elected
as director of the National Court Reporters Association.
This group is responsible for standards that real-time
and CART captioners follow so that we, the deaf, could
easily read the captions on the screen.
- Tuesday August 16th
A New York judge turned down the request by New York City government to take down all of its
15,000 alarm boxes. Reason is that it would prevent
the deaf from using the box in case of emergencies.
- Wednesday August 17th
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission is asking the deaf for their comments on
captions with focus on captioning errors.

COMPARING PAST ORAL STORIES
DeafDigest editor, himself a graduate from a deaf oral
school had a long chat with a friend, himself a graduate
of another deaf oral school.
What did they talk about? Laughing and crying over
these "horrible" days at oral schools. Examples were
teachers hitting signing students' hands with rulers
punishing signers by not letting them go on field trips;
forcing them to lipread hearing speakers at school
assemblies, forced to give oral speeches at
school assemblies, etc, etc.
Many of us laugh over our past oral days, but some
still cry over these days. Very sad.

AN UNUSUAL DEAF-OWNED RESTAURANT IN BUDA
Buda is a small town within easy driving distance of
Austin, Texas. This town advertises itself as the
Outdoor Capital Of Texas.
There is an unusual restaurant in Buda. The name of
the restaurant - ViUDA Bistro is unusual. The arrangement
is unusual in that this restaurant shares space with a
hearing-owned breakfast/lunch place. The restaurant
hours is unusual in that it is open only on weekends.
And one recent dish is unusual - Yak meat. And the name
of one dish is unusual - The Corruption.
So far it is doing pretty good. Paul Rutkowski, a former
deaf relay executive, owns it, and the deaf chef is Kurt
Ramborger, a veteran of 17 years in the restaurant business.
The staff - sous chef, line cook and a dishwasher are
all deaf.
A DEAF SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN DURING THE DEPRESSION
During the Roaring Twenties, there was a successful businessman
in a small town, who was deaf.
Alfred Granger, a deaf man, was a peanut vendor in Clyde, Ohio, a small town.
Alfred could not speak but was able to gesture to communicate
with his customers that wanted to purchase freshly-roasted
peanuts.
A small book is being written in his honor.

A NEW PRIEST FOR THE DEAF IN MILWAUKEE
There are just about 10 deaf priests that serve the
deaf. The latest one is a new one - Father Christopher Klusman,
who splits his time between the St. Roman Catholic Church
in Milwaukee and a new ministry he is trying to establish.
This position poses challenges not because he is deaf
but because of the scandal that practically destroyed
St John's School for the Deaf.
So far he has made a great impression on the deaf in
the area.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
Some hearing people believe that if they shout, and make a lot of gestures, they can make themselves
understood without help of an interpreter!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As you are considering whether to use remote CART or onsite CART in a
high school or university setting, you will find that remote CART
also has many advantages.
For remote CART, the student would bring a laptop into the classroom
and connect via the Internet with a CART provider who is located at
some other location. There would be a microphone or microphones in
the classroom so that the CART provider could hear what was going on
over a phone line or Internet connection.
One of the advantages of remote CART is that it is sometimes more
affordable because you do not have the travel time and setup involved
as you would with onsite CART.
If a student is moving from classroom to classroom, sometimes remote
CART is easier because the CART provider does not have to move all of
the CART equipment from one location to another location. Everything
onsite is done by the student, so there is no outside person involved
onsite.
Another advantage is if you do not have an experienced CART provider
in your area, any CART provider anywhere in the country could cover
the assignment. It could be especially helpful in a rural area where
there are no CART providers.
THESE CASTLE ART SLEUTHS
The way it is in the art world, artists become more famous dead than alive.
Seems the hottest dead artist right now is James Castle,
who passed away in 1977. He never aspired for a big time
career in art; he was merely content to do a lot of doodling
on things in a house - table, chair, doors, etc - on "junk"
paper and "junk" drawing material.
Oh, Castle, who attended Idaho School for the Deaf and
Blind, never learned to read or write and lived out his
78 years in isolation. While he was deaf he never made friends
in the deaf community.
Right now the sleuths, at the Fogg Museum's Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies on the campus of
Harvard University, are studying how Castle was able to do
the work that he did on "junk" stuff.

If you are deaf and wish to emigrate to Australia, don't even
think of trying. Making the newspapers was the story of a family
denied visa application to live in Australia. Reason was one of
the children was deaf.
Keep in mind that Australia denied visas for a group of
visiting deaf foreigners wanting to attend the World Federation
of the Deaf some time back.

Doing dental work with high speed tools may be hazardous
for hearing dentists, but not for deaf dentists!
Noise generated by these tools may cause deafness among
some of the hearing dentists. Not so with the already-deaf
dentists.
This conclusion was reached by the Oregon Health & Science
University and the School of Dentistry.
It is not a problem with DeafDigest's personal dentist,

Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinics Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Program is seeking a full time professional to conduct individual, group, and family therapeutic skills sessions with participants involved in a program serving deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children. All work is done under the direct supervision of a licensed mental health professional. Clients are between the ages 5-22 with mental health and behavioral concerns.
This is a collaborative program of VOA-MN Mental Health Clinics and the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD). The DHH IMPACT Program is located on the campus of MSAD in Faribault, MN. This position is fulltime during the academic year with summers off.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's Level mental health practitioner
- Proficiency in ASL and strong knowledge of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deafblind culture
- Strong communication and writing skills
- Strong computer skills
- Basic math skills
- Ability to work with a diverse population of individuals by using tact, diplomacy, and flexibility
- Direct experience in programming for children with mental health disorders is preferred.
