DOOR SHUT THEN OPEN
Always a mystery why several hearing people in a
room would shut the door during a heavy discussion,
and then open the door few minutes later.
Are they talking bad things about the deaf?
Hope not!

DEAF PERSON AND HEARING BLIND BECOME BEST FRIENDS
A deaf person at work is lucky. His company
hired a blind person as a new employee.
That hearing blind person is not 100 percent
blind - has very fuzzy vision that he cannot
see clearly, just fuzzy.
And the blind person easily understands
deaf "speech" and knows fingerspelling!
This is why the deaf person is happy
to help the blind person at work.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
arriving at a government building for an interpreting
assignment with a deaf employee, only to be blocked
by the security guard - being forced to wait a long
time before someone comes up to verify for him
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
This week our nation will celebrate a holiday when we can slow down and reflect on the many blessings we have in our lives.
As a profession, court reporters and realtime captioners have much to be grateful for. They have skills and talents that are necessary to record and communicate important messages in our fast-paced world.
I personally am very thankful for the hard work of the realtime captioners who bring us newscasts, sporting events, and other live broadcasts. Much of their work must be done when others of us choose to spend time with our families and friends.
Most sporting events take place on the weekends, and newscasts are often during dinnertime or at bedtime for many of us. There are live events that must be captioned on holidays. When a disaster strikes or an emergency takes place, captioners must be there at all hours of the day and night.
Thank you to all of you who have worked hard over the years to bring access via captioning and CART to people across America.
For all of you who read steno, may I take this opportunity to say:
HAP/PEU/THAPBGS/TKPWEUFG
For those of you who do not read steno, Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
being asked a question like this -
can deaf people cook meals?
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Rubella, a cyclical disease that was the leading cause
of deafness, gone for good?
Well, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
is saying that it no longer is a public health threat.
In the past when rubella hit us, many schools for
the deaf had to quickly expand to accommodate a huge
surge in student population before contracting as
the disease wound down.
(does DeafDigest editor believe that rubella is gone
for good? No!)
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Greg Hlibok was named Chief of the FCC's Disability
Rights Office.
Why is this a huge deal, a big time deal?
Because during the prehistoric years of 1979 thru 1983, DeafDigest
editor served as Executive Director of TDI. During these years
there was NO ONE at FCC that showed interest or even sensitivity
to the needs of the deaf. Yes, FCC approved Line 21, that was all
so necessary to get captions on TV - but that was about it.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Years ago we had many deaf draftsmen; some of them have
called themselves engineers even though they have no
engineering degrees. Ego?
