Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Father Rene Robert,
St Augustine, FL, that departed us. He served Florida
School for the Deaf and Blind as the school chaplain
for years before leaving this position. He continued
to serve the deaf community in a variety of capacities.
below as copied from DeafDigest Sports
Dedication, belated
DeafDigest Sports dedicates this edition to Barry Siekierka
that departed us last November, but word did not reach
the editor until this week. He was a great basketball player
at Pennsylvania SD and for several deaf basketball clubs.
He was the best 3-point shooter around only if
there was a 3-point rule during the late fifties/early
sixties! His long range 3-point, oops, 2-point shot
at the buzzer helped underdog Philadelphia host team
defeat seeded Council Bluffs 86-85 in the opening
round of the 1964 national deaf basketball tournament.
Barry only had a short basketball career, retiring
from this sport as a young man.
Top stories about the deaf:
Bad captions lead to confusion and blown opportunities.
This is what the Federal Times emphasized in a recent
article with respect to deaf federal employees that
depend on captions as part of their work responsibilities.
ADA in Japan? The Law on Elimination of Discrimination Against Disabilities is now in effect, but as with
our ADA, no one knows what is what - and it takes time
to sort things out!
What has become of Dean Barton-Smith, a deaf participant
in the hearing Olympics in decathlon years back? Fully
retired from athletic competition, he is the CEO of
Deaf Children Australia. He was profiled in a newspaper
story. It is not known if he uses sign language now,
because years ago, he didn't.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (South Korea) has given
an award to Moon Byung-gil, director of the Seoul Association of the Deaf for empowering the deaf of
Seoul with their rights and needs.
A magic hearing aid, or as better known as
thought-controlled hearing aid? French hearing aid
researcher Dr Alain de Cheveigné said that thought-
controlled hearing aids can help the deaf hear better
by blocking out unnecessary noise that swirls
around him.

A CANCELLED CI OPERATION
A deaf man was scheduled to have a CI implant at
a hospital.
He arrived at the hospital, and the operating room
staff got him ready for the operation.
He waited for a long time, and was told to go home,
because the operation was canceled.
Why was it canceled? Because the CI people did not have
their own CI operation equipment and surgical tools. These
were missing and cannot be found.
A deaf doctor said:
Happens frequently - each surgeon has his own list of
equipment for each operation, and sometimes the operating
room staff cannot find the stuff!

When you go to the doctor's office..make your visit go more smoothly!

DEAF COMMUNITY'S TWILIGHT ZONE
The "Twilight Zone" was a popular TV program during
the late fifties and early sixties. And we see reruns
from time to time on cable TV.
Do we have a Deaf Twilight Zone? No, but there
was a joke about an interpreter involved with the
Deaf Twilight Zone.
The interpreter, on TV, was located in a small box
in the corner of the TV set. When the program ended,
the interpreter was still stuck in that small box,
unable to escape!
It is just a joke.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being asked by a hearing person in the audience:
who do you work for?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
The first American patent for a shorthand machine was granted to Miles Bartholomew in 1879. He continued to make further improvements to that machine and received another patent in 1884, but his system never advanced beyond writing one letter per keystroke.
In 1906, inventor and reporter Ward Stone Ireland developed a shorthand machine using the concept of producing several letters and even several words with a single keystroke.
He obtained his first patent in 1910 and produced the first stenotype machine, but it weighed 54 pounds, so it was practical to be used only in a fixed location. He continued to improve his design, and by 1912 he was able to produce his fourth stenotype machine, which weighed 8 1/4 pounds.
The key to the success of Ireland's keyboard was that few keys were used, and he could reduce or eliminate the awkward reaching for keys. This keyboard design is the one still in use in court reporting and captioning shorthand machines today.

not understanding 100 percent of what the interpreter
is interpreting
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to a Gallaudet
Iron Man, Harold Weingold, who departed us.
In 1943, the Five Gallaudet Iron Men (Paul
Baldridge, Don Padden, Earl Roberts, Roy Holcomb
and Harold Weingold) won the 1943 Mason-Dixon
Conference Basketball tournament despite a losing
regular season record and being seeded last. They
were called Iron Men because they played three full
tournament games without substitution. Gallaudet
had good players on the bench but the coach chose to
stay with the winning combination on the floor.
Harold was a long time resident of West Virginia
after graduating from Gallaudet.
Thank you, Harold for giving Gallaudet its
proudest hour in men's basketball.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
The Detroit Day School for the Deaf is slated to be
closed for good in June. The school was, at one time,
capable of holding 140 deaf students but currently
only teaches 49. These surviving students will be
reassigned to other schools in the city.
editor's note: the board of education overcame
fierce protests from parents and forced the
school to be closed for good.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
A deaf attorney joining the Supreme Court bar
does not mean he will be arguing often in
front of the justices. Odds are against it!
