Otolaryngologist Charles Limb, not deaf, probably loves music much more than his profession of Otolaryngology. Anyway he made news this week by saying that the way the brain functions to musical sounds could lead to better treatment on hearing loss! Using the sensitive imaging equipment, he has analyzed the way the brain works and feels with some tinkering here and there, hearing loss treatment could be done. He operates out of Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Institute. Not surprisingly, he, as a doctor, lectures musical students on how to use computers to enhance music! .. Gallaudet University is hosting the first time ever Deaf Interpreter Conference next month in June. It would be interesting to learn of the issues addressed by deaf interpreters. Unlike hearing interpreters, deaf interpreters do not earn a full time living in this profession - unless they interpret for the deaf-blind. Also, they are "third party" interpreters, re-interpreting the interpreted words by "first party" interpreters on behalf of deaf clients whose knowledge of English is weak. .. KICKING OUT THE DEAF GAMBLERS Many Americans love to gamble. Many deaf people also love to gamble. There are many deaf poker tournaments everywhere. For many years the annual national deaf basketball tournament, run by American Athletic Association of the Deaf (AAAD) attracted well known deaf gamblers. They liked to place bets on their favorite deaf teams. Not any more. The AAAD is also no more, replaced by USA Deaf Basketball Association (USADB). And the USADB officers are strict. We need to find ways to trap an important person, and make him listen to our requests. In the past, the important person was Julius Barnathan, the ABC engineer, who alone, would decide the fate of closed captioning. Mac Norwood, who fought for closed captioning, knew that Julius appreciated good liquor. Both men spent many hours at watering holes in New York, discussing captioning issues. Eventually Barnathan agreed, and rest is history for us. There are many other issues. An example would be the state Commissioner of Education, whose decision could continue or close a school for the deaf. If he likes to go fishing, go fishing with him; if he likes to watch a baseball game, go to a game with him, if he likes to place bets at a gambling casino, go gamble with him. Important people tend to listen in much relaxed conditions. FATHER OF CONGRESSIONAL SOFTBALL LEAGUE A popular recreational activity among young people that work in Congress is softball. They play in the Congressional Softball League. This Washington, DC league has been in existence since the early seventies. Whose idea it was to establish the league? As a young man, Howard Gorrell, who is deaf, worked for the National Republican Party. As a former college athlete and a Deaflympics athlete, he wanted to play competitive softball. His organizational skills helped found the league! One of his softball teammates was the father of the famous actress Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls TV series). Howard remembers Lauren, as that cute tot, always running around, and getting into the way of players on the field! Howard eventually moved on to deaf softball teams and one season, his team won the national deaf softball championship. Looking back, he said: Playing congressional softball is the GREATEST thing to do on the Hill! Gorrell is still involved with sports, overseeing the US national deaf tennis program. HAIR SALON IN JAPAN There are hair salons everywhere in the world, especially in Omura City, in the southern part of Japan. One such salon is named "Hair Salon Teru" and is owned by Tsutomu Miyamoto. He is deaf. BIG NEWS IN PHILIPPINES Recently a deaf man was hired to work in a court house in Philippines. The newspapers wrote up the hiring as something so sensational. In USA, we are so used to seeing deaf people work for high profile employers (United Nations, Capitol Hill, New York Mets, an American embassy, etc). Not that so in Philippines! 10 THINGS THEY WON'T TELL YOU We all have things we won't tell other people. Whether this trait is good or bad, just keep in mind it is human nature. We're all equally guilty. Now what about us, the deaf? Deaf and the Money: Year 1866 - the Gallaudet baseball team challenged Union, a local semi pro baseball team to a game. The game was a sell out. Union's share of gate proceeds - $2,000 Gallaudet's share of gate proceeds - zero!
