News of the Week
We have many talented deaf artists; we also have
many deaf individuals that appreciate Deaf Art.
Put both together and we have a Deaf Art showing
called "Sonic Chromatic" that is taking place
next week at the Tamarind Art Gallery in
New York.
Spearheading these efforts is Azadeh Malekan,
a deaf intern at the Tamarind Art Gallery.

..

Otolaryngologist Charles Limb, not deaf, probably
loves music much more than his profession of
Otolaryngology.
Anyway he made news this week by saying that
the way the brain functions to musical sounds could
lead to better treatment on hearing loss!
Using the sensitive imaging equipment, he has
analyzed the way the brain works and feels with some
tinkering here and there, hearing loss treatment
could be done.
He operates out of Johns Hopkins University's
Peabody Institute. Not surprisingly, he, as a doctor,
lectures musical students on how to use computers
to enhance music!

..

Gallaudet University is hosting the first time
ever Deaf Interpreter Conference next month in
June.
It would be interesting to learn of the issues
addressed by deaf interpreters.
   Unlike hearing interpreters, deaf interpreters
do not earn a full time living in this profession
- unless they interpret for the deaf-blind.
Also, they are "third party" interpreters,
re-interpreting the interpreted words by "first
party" interpreters on behalf of deaf clients
whose knowledge of English is weak.

..

For the benefit of DeafDigest subscribers that love
sports, a feature, discontinued few years ago, has been
re-introduced.
It is DeafSports, and the link is as:

http://deafdigest.com/deafsports

Every week in the Gold edition, a new DeafSports
column will be posted. It is separate from
DeafDigest Sports.

Closed Captioning Survey - FCC wants to hear from you!

Are you happy with closed captioning? Frustrated? What problems
do you have?

CSD and partners - the National Center for Accessible Media at
WGBH, the National Association of the Deaf, the Hearing
Loss Association of America and a representative of the Coalition
of Organizations for Accessible Technology - have developed a
closed captioning survey to further address captioning issues
around the nation.

We ask that you take some time to fill out the survey.
Please go to http://dtv.c-s-d.org/survey and share your
thoughts.

We offer another way of completing the survey - call the CSD DTV
Help Center, and have the agent fill it out for you!

This innovative Help Center call can receive traditional phone
calls, and also TTY, relay, videophone, and CapTel calls.

This means that regardless of the level of hearing loss, the
Help Center is equipped to handle any call type preference.

Below is contact information:
- Voice: 1-877-DTV-4YOU (1-877-388-4968)
- TTY: 1-877-TTY-4CSD (1-877-889-4273)
- Direct Videophone via Number: 866-351-1950 or 866-401-3519
- Direct Videophone via IP Address: DTV03.CSD.TV; DTV04.CSD.TV;
- AIM: DTVCSR07 or DTVCSR008

CSD created a humorous video explaining more about the closed
captioning survey. To see it, please visit:

http://dtv.c-s-d.org

CSD will compile survey statistics and submit to the FCC.

A CRAZY LAW IN MASSACHUSETTS
For many years in Massachusetts, all deaf clubs broke
the law.
The state had an old law that requires all movie
projectionists to have a state license! Why? We do not
know.
This means that deaf clubs in the state that show
captioned films were in violation of the law.
Fortunately, no deaf projectionists were arrested!
Today, it seems not to be a problem because movie
films are old fashioned; we watch movies with DVDs.

KICKING OUT THE DEAF GAMBLERS
Many Americans love to gamble. Many deaf people also
love to gamble. There are many deaf poker tournaments
everywhere.
For many years the annual national deaf basketball
tournament, run by American Athletic Association
of the Deaf (AAAD) attracted well known deaf
gamblers. They liked to place bets on their favorite
deaf teams.
Not any more. The AAAD is also no more, replaced
by USA Deaf Basketball Association (USADB). And the
USADB officers are strict. Anyone caught gambling
on tournament games will be kicked out of the gym!

HOW TO TRAP AN IMPORTANT PERSON?
We need to find ways to trap an important
person, and make him listen to our requests.
In the past, the important person was
Julius Barnathan, the ABC engineer, who alone,
would decide the fate of closed captioning.
Mac Norwood, who fought for closed captioning,
knew that Julius appreciated good liquor. Both
men spent many hours at watering holes in
New York, discussing captioning issues.
Eventually Barnathan agreed, and rest is
history for us.
There are many other issues. An example would
be the state Commissioner of Education, whose
decision could continue or close a school for
the deaf.
   If he likes to go fishing, go fishing with him;
if he likes to watch a baseball game, go to a game
with him, if he likes to place bets at a gambling
casino, go gamble with him.
Important people tend to listen in much
relaxed conditions.

FATHER OF CONGRESSIONAL SOFTBALL LEAGUE
A popular recreational activity among young
people that work in Congress is softball. They
play in the Congressional Softball League. This
Washington, DC league has been in existence since
the early seventies.
Whose idea it was to establish the league?
As a young man, Howard Gorrell, who is deaf,
worked for the National Republican Party. As a
former college athlete and a Deaflympics athlete,
he wanted to play competitive softball. His
organizational skills helped found the league!
One of his softball teammates was the father
of the famous actress Lauren Graham (Gilmore
Girls TV series). Howard remembers Lauren, as
that cute tot, always running around, and getting into
the way of players on the field!
Howard eventually moved on to deaf softball teams
and one season, his team won the national deaf
softball championship.
   Looking back, he said:

Playing congressional softball is the GREATEST thing to
do on the Hill!

Gorrell is still involved with sports, overseeing
the US national deaf tennis program.

HAIR SALON IN JAPAN
There are hair salons everywhere in the world,
especially in Omura City, in the southern part of
Japan.
One such salon is named "Hair Salon Teru" and
is owned by Tsutomu Miyamoto.
   He is deaf.

BIG NEWS IN PHILIPPINES
Recently a deaf man was hired to work in a
court house in Philippines. The newspapers wrote
up the hiring as something so sensational.
In USA, we are so used to seeing deaf people
work for high profile employers (United Nations,
Capitol Hill, New York Mets, an American
embassy, etc). Not that so in Philippines!

10 THINGS THEY WON'T TELL YOU

We all have things we won't tell other people.
Whether this trait is good or bad, just keep in mind
it is human nature. We're all equally guilty.
Now what about us, the deaf? These professionals
won't tell us what they know:

- audiologist
- vocational rehabilitation counselor
- educators of the deaf
- interpreters
- oral educators
- Cued speech professionals
- CI patients
- CI surgeons
- Hearing aid dealers
- ADA advisors

There may be others, but above is enough for
starters!

TALES FROM FORMER DEAF DOMINO'S PIZZA DRIVERS

(new series - to be run on a weekly basis until list of
tales run out)

On my second day of my new job as a Domino's Pizza Driver,
the store was robbed. I was pushed away by the robber.
The store manager yelled at the robber that I was deaf.
Scared hearing drivers quit. I continued with the job
and was one of the two witnesses at the robber's
court trial!

If you are a former Deaf Domino Driver and have an
interesting tale, please share it with:

To be officially deaf? As if the judge stamped his
approval on papers to certify the person as deaf?

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
The White House has been presented with a list of
recommendations on how to improve accessibility by the
deaf on credit card web sites.
The major issue is that sound activated links are
pretty much useless to us, the deaf. Instead, these links
need to be tagged so that we, the deaf, will know what
these are all about.

Question of the week:

Q. I wish to adopt a deaf child. What advice would you have

..

Wish List of the Week:

that instead of threatening schools for the deaf with
closing, just give them more money

..

DeafHistory - Looking Back:

Year 1907 - Sexton Manufacturing Company in Fairfield, IL,
posted a request in a local newspaper, asking for 150
deaf employees to work in their clothes manufacturing
plant.

.

Deaf and the Money:

Year 1866 - the Gallaudet baseball team challenged
Union, a local semi pro baseball team to a game.

The game was a sell out.

Union's share of gate proceeds - $2,000

Gallaudet's share of gate proceeds - zero!

It was a painful lesson for Gallaudet students
not to overlook potential gate proceeds when
signing game contracts with hearing opponents

Taking inflation into consideration, $2,000 would have
been approximately $50,000 nowadays!

..

DeafNumbers of the Week:

Vint Cerf, the father of the Internet, is deaf
and wears a CI. He is the world's #1 authority
on issues concerning the Internet.

Anyway, in his private life, he maintains a
private library.

How many books does he have in his own home

over 10.000 books
