Top stories about the deaf:
NTID director Gerry Buckley accepted a proclamation
from Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, that kicked off
the International Deaf Awareness Week.
In Wales, shortage of interpreters is so severe
that deaf people are forced to show up for their
social service appointments alone, not understanding
the proceedings.
Nebraska is one of the few states without a state
deaf school. Mainstreamed students are sent to
local school districts. Some districts are good.
Some are bad. For that reason, The Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is
establishing a task force to review the state's
educational practices.
Deaf prisoners are saying they were glad that
the FCC has required use of communication devices
within the prison walls. They suffered from isolation
from outside for years.
Deaf actor John McGinty is said to be the first
deaf actor ever to play the Quasimodo role in
the famous production - The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
There were issues that this role would forever
typecast this deaf actor, but he said he's not
worried about it!

VIDEO OF A DYING LANGUAGE
In Great Britain and Scotland, deaf people used fingerspelling
for many years with both hands. This fingerspelling language
is dying because younger people use signs not fingerspelling.
As a result, there is a project right now - to visit older
people in Scotland that continue to use two-hand fingerspelling.
The deaf filmmakers want to video this fingerspelling before
these older people die.

UNION STATION IN WASHINGTON, DC
Union Station is not too far from Gallaudet
University.
This station has a lot of history. Many years ago
Gallaudet students went to the Union Station to take
the trains back to their home towns. There were always
many Gallaudet students at Union Station greeting
each other for the fall semester, and saying farewell
after the spring semester.
Times have changed. Students either fly or drive.
But many deaf people still go to Union Station - because
it has a big Food Court and students always get tired
of college food!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Some people may have been hesitant to request Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services in an educational setting because they thought they had to hire and pay for the services themselves.
However, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), CART is a legitimate auxiliary aid for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. It has also been confirmed in the courts that it is a reasonable accommodation for those people.
Some CART captioners may be employees of the university or school system, while others are independent contractors hired to cover specific courses for specific students. Many times the university contracts with a CART captioning agency to provide CART services for whatever classes may need to be covered, and that agency will then use their employees or independent contractors to cover the classes.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Deaf residents of Montana wanting to attend law school at
the University of Montana better make sure the law school
is still accredited.
The law school was told by the American Bar Association
to improve access for law students with disabilities, deaf
included, lest accreditation would be revoked.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
On Bravo's reality series "Work of Art" one of the
participants is Leon Lim, born in Malaysia but a resident
of New York City. He is deaf. The irony is that he is
competing in a TV show despite having never owned a
TV in his life!
