Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Delores Alice Miller, League City, TX that departed us.
Born in Louisiana she moved to the Washington, DC
area where she led an interesting and varied
life - Gallaudet student and then attending
the International Culinary Arts and Institute.
After working as chef for several years she
then became a certified Deaf Interpreter/Deaf Advocate with the Defense Mapping Agency
before retiring and moving to Texas.
Top stories about the deaf:
A crowd of 30,000 disabled people, many of them
deaf, staged a protest in India, presenting
19 demands. They were backed by thirty
organizations serving the deaf and the
disabled.
The Deaf community in Glasgow, Scotland is in
mourning over the death of a popular deaf woman.
She disappeared after attending a deaf event.
A massive search found her dead in the water.
A group of sign language students at Toyo University
in Japan created a set of new signs for high tech
words and phrases, while working with the
State Corporation Japan Aerospace Exploration
and Research and Development Agency. It is tantamount to NASA asking a local university
to create new signs for words in space
and astronomy.
JoAnn Benfield has been appointed director of
Gallaudet University Regional Center-South
at Austin Community College (ACC), Riverside Campus.
A newspaper said that Utah is a top employment
attraction for interpreters, thanks to strong
ASL programs in schools and colleges.

DEAF HOUSE IS IMPORTANT
For the deaf parents, a Deaf House is very
important.
They can see what their children are doing
(jumping, running around, banging on tables,
fighting with each other, etc).
Hearing parents can hear. Deaf parents
can't hear. This is the reason for the
Deaf House!

ASL IN DEAF SCHOOL AND ASL IN MAINSTREAMED SCHOOLS
Is ASL used by the deaf at deaf schools better
than ASL used by the deaf at mainstreamed programs?
Many deaf people would say yes, deaf school ASL
is better.
Not always true. There are many deaf school
students that don't sign well and there are also
mainstreamed students that sign ASL beautifully!
Do not always assume one ASL is better than other.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
In 1982, even more "firsts" took place with regard to CART and captioning. This was the first time a deaf attorney ever argued a case before the Supreme Court of the United States. Michael Chatoff argued on behalf of a deaf girl from New York in the case of Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Amy Rowley.
Because the Supreme Court does not hear live testimony, they do not normally have court reporters present. As a result, this was also the first time a court reporter was brought into the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court permitted CART technology to aid the deaf lawyer. Mr. Chatoff, who could speak but not hear, communicated with the Justices of the Supreme Court during oral arguments by reading their questions from the CART display and then speaking back to them.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The FCC enacted a ruling that relay operators must stay
with a call for ten minutes before switching to another
relay operator.
What does an administrator of an interpreting agency
have to say about it?
The administrator said:
Hoorah! The relay operators were switching calls too
frequently for one reason or another (leaving for lunch,
leaving for the day, going to the restroom, etc). We
have been telling the FCC that we are professionals and
know our jobs and to give us the ability to use our
professional judgment and find the best match. The FCC
has finally listened to us

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Could a junior college student serve as the lead
engineer of a NASA team that is conducting a
series of microgravity experiments? Let us
revise this question a bit - could a deaf
engineer serve as the lead engineer? Yes,
Eric Shear, who is deaf and relies on his
interpreters, attends Tacoma Community College
in Washington. Part of the newspaper story
read like this:
He is leading a team of engineers on a microgravity
experiment at NASA at the Johnson Space Center in
Houston.
Shear wants to enroll at a 4-year college,
majoring in aeronautical engineering.
