Great Britain:
Deaf athletes need to raise their own funds to pay their
way to take part in the international competition. The
British national deaf badminton team raised funds by
playing badminton for 24 hours and encouraging fans
to make donations.
Botswanna
Kagiso Morapedi and Gaone Mokoto, both deaf, became the
second deaf couple to get married in Botswana.
It is hard to believe.
The pastor has married many, many deaf couples in Zambia.
Not that so in Botswana. The first deaf couple was married
by the pastor 10 years ago!

In Uganda, there is a cost war between several
telecommunication carriers, in hopes of attracting
more customers.
This cost war is not helping the deaf because text
messages are priced higher than voice messages.
This issue was raised by Joseph Mbulamwana, an
officer with the Uganda National Association of the Deaf

Kinect evolving from a game and entertainment device
to a sign language device? Yes, if a Georgia Tech
research team has its way. They are saying sign language
results is just about 99 percent accurate.
Of what practical use would ASL Kinect be? Researchers
are saying it may have medical, academic and accessibility
uses.
Oh, well, time will tell.

The Michigan Deaf Community staged a vigil by the candlelight in
hopes of staving off the governor's signing of the bill that
would OK the sale of the campus to a private developer.
The governor eventually ignored the vigil and went ahead to sign the bill!

Any difference in developing good grammar if the child is
identified as early as possible as deaf or if they were
discovered few years later?
This is why a research team at the University of Southampton
in Great Britain is trying to find out.

RIT's Digital Arts, Film and Animation Competition for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students
High school students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing can express themselves through art and win exciting prizes by entering Rochester Institute of Technology's fifth annual Digital Arts, Film and Animation Competition for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students.
Ninth through 12th grade students may enter in several categories, including Web design, graphic media, film, 3-D animation, interactive media and photo illustration.
To qualify, students must submit the following by postal mail: an entry form, a 150 - 300 word descriptive essay about their work, and the artwork itself on CD or DVD.
Students may submit up to two entries in two different art categories.
Winners will receive cash prizes at an awards ceremony in the spring and have their winning work exhibited in the Dyer Arts Center on the RIT campus.
The deadline to register is January 15, 2011.

Many years ago there was no such a thing as a
capital case D.
Capital case D means Deaf, not deaf. Good or bad?
Well, DeafDigest editor never forgot the story of
a deaf husband and deaf wife, both from very long
generations of deafness in their family trees.
When they got married, everyone expected their
children to be deaf. But all of their children
were hearing.
What did these Deaf (Capital D) do with their
hearing children? Loved them very much and raised
them the best they could to lead good lives for
themselves.

The company's name is Lamar Sign Company. Their

AT&T INTRODUCES VIDEO RELAY SERVICE APP FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
USERS ON THE APP STORE
App Allows Users To Make Video Relay Service Calls With iPhone 4
DALLAS - DECEMBER 21, 2010 - AT&T* today announced a new video relay
service (VRS) app for iPhone 4 that allows deaf and hard of hearing
customers to make VRS calls. The AT&T VRS app is available today on
the App Store.
AT&T VRS is a service that allows a person who uses American Sign
Language (ASL) to place a relay call to a hearing person by
communicating through a certified ASL interpreter. AT&T has offered
video relay services to customers for many years, but the new AT&T
VRS app provides a more flexible and convenient way for users to make
VRS calls on the go. iPhone 4 customers can make unlimited VRS calls
using the AT&T VRS app at no additional cost.
"AT&T is committed to serving the deaf and hard of hearing
communities, and our new AT&T VRS app is one more way we're enhancing
our offerings," said Susan Johnson, senior vice president of AT&T
Customer Information Services. "Now our customers can make a VRS call
at Wi-Fi hotspots using iPhone 4, which makes VRS easier and more
accessible for everyone."
The AT&T VRS app is simple and easy to use. Users launch the app,
log-in, and then can either choose to place a VRS call by selecting
someone from their contact list or by manually dialing a number. The
app contacts an AT&T ASL interpreter who then initiates a FaceTime
video call with the user.** The interpreter will connect the ASL user
to the hearing person they are calling, and relays the conversation
between the two parties through ASL.
In addition to the app, AT&T VRS also offers a free software download
called AT&T Video Link that turns a computer or laptop into a video
phone. This software works on certain Macs and PCs enabled with a web
cam and a broadband connection.
AT&T VRS will also provide users with a ten-digit telephone number
and supports all the FCC required 911 emergency capabilities.

A MOVIE IN A RESTAURANT
DeafDigest editor and his wife went to a restaurant
in Washington, DC.
That restaurant shows DVD movies for the benefit
of its patrons that prefer to watch a film than to
read a newspaper or to get into a conversation.
That movie always shows captions. It is not only
because the restaurant is noisy, but because patrons
that eat at a long distance from the screen may not
be able to hear the sound.
This would be perfect for deaf patrons.
DON'T FOLLOW ARLEN SPECTER'S EXAMPLE
Outgoing senator Arlen Specter made the news
by badmouthing everything about the Congress.
This is a poor example of being a sore loser.
Why is DeafDigest mentioning it.
About 25 years ago, DeafDigest editor worked
for a deaf service agency. Because of budget
problems, a deaf IT employee was laid off.
The CEO privately told DeafDigest editor he
hoped the deaf IT man would be rehired when
things got better.
Anyway, during the exit interview, the deaf
IT man badmouthed everything about the deaf
service agency.
A week later. The computer system crashed;
this breakdown was serious.
Naturally the deaf IT mean was not asked
to come back to fix the crashed system!
It just does not pay to badmouth the
employer, be it deaf or hearing.

A NFL GAME COIN FLIP
If you are watching the Indianapolis Colts-Tennessee Titans
game on TV on January 2nd, hopefully you will catch the glimpse
of Zachary Foster flipping the pre-game coin.
The winner of the pre-game coin flip decides whether to
receive the kick off or to kick off.
Zachary is deaf and is a 6th grader at the Indiana School
for the Deaf.
And as a sidebar, Jeff Fisher, the Tennessee coach, is deaf
in one ear and has been known to be sympathetic to the needs
of the deaf.
WHAT SOME INTERPRETERS MAY NOT KNOW!
There was a posting on a deaf yahoogroup that interpreters
working in San Diego, California, may need to file papers to
get a Business Tax Certificate. This is especially if they
get 1099 forms for income earned.
Those that do not file may be subject to additional
penalties. And that other cities may also require these
Business Tax Certificates!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As we celebrate this holiday season, it is fun to occasionally
reflect on our lives and the people whose lives we have touched, like
George Bailey did in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life."
Realtime captioners, CART providers, and court reporters use their
talents and skills to touch the lives of many people on a daily
basis. Without them, things would be very different for people who
rely upon their services.
If court reporters were not in the courtroom, there would be no
record of the important proceedings that take place. They preserve
the record for appeals and provide a vital service for judges,
attorneys, and people involved in litigation.
If CART providers were not in the classrooms, meetings, offices, and
other places they provide services, many people with a hearing loss
would not be able to participate in the activities that are very
important to their lives.
If realtime captioners were not available to cover news, sports, and
other live broadcasts, people around the world would miss information
that is necessary to function in this ever-changing world we live in.
These people touch the lives of millions of people every day. It
truly is a wonderful life.
FIXING PRESSURE HORNS
We, the deaf, may not always be able to hear pressure horns
mounted on vehicles.
Don't say that to Mohammed Shamin and Ishan Shamin, the father
and son team of Allahabad, a regional city in the northern part
of India.
They are deaf and they own a shop which repairs defective
pressure horns. While they cannot hear, they feel the vibrations
and know what is wrong and what is needed to fix.
They are considered to be one of the best pressure horn
mechanics in the city!

DEAF POLITICAL AWARENESS
Q. In a certain politically-charged state, a deaf advocate
could not make headways with the state legislative body.
The replacement person, who was hard of hearing, was
more successful. Why?
A. Sad to say, the legislators had no patience dealing with a deaf person, via interpreters! In some states, it works, in other states it didn't.

Communication Disorders, the National Institute for Occupational

at San Antonio have jointly agreed on one thing.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
First it was Jack Gannon, who took time off from regular
duties at Gallaudet, to write the book "Deaf Heritage"
which debuted at the 1980 NAD Conference.
Now it is Larry Puthoff, who also took time off from
regular duties at Communication Service for the Deaf,
Sioux Falls, SD to write the book "The Transcendent Territory"
which rightfully is the encyclopedia of anything you wanted
to know about the deaf in South Dakota. This book is now
hot off the presses and the DeafDigest editor will be ordering

This loophole kills the Act of 2010.

British national deaf badminton team raised funds by

second deaf couple to get married in Botswana.

Ninth through 12th grade students may enter in several categories, including Web design, graphic media, film, 3-D animation, interactive media and photo illustration.
To qualify, students must submit the following by postal mail: an entry form, a 150 - 300 word descriptive essay about their work, and the artwork itself on CD or DVD.

Well, DeafDigest editor never forgot the story of
a deaf husband and deaf wife, both from very long

were hearing.

AT&T INTRODUCES VIDEO RELAY SERVICE APP FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
USERS ON THE APP STORE
App Allows Users To Make Video Relay Service Calls With iPhone 4
DALLAS - DECEMBER 21, 2010 - AT&T* today announced a new video relay
service (VRS) app for iPhone 4 that allows deaf and hard of hearing
customers to make VRS calls. The AT&T VRS app is available today on
the App Store.
AT&T VRS is a service that allows a person who uses American Sign
Language (ASL) to place a relay call to a hearing person by
communicating through a certified ASL interpreter. AT&T has offered
video relay services to customers for many years, but the new AT&T
VRS app provides a more flexible and convenient way for users to make
VRS calls on the go. iPhone 4 customers can make unlimited VRS calls
using the AT&T VRS app at no additional cost.
"AT&T is committed to serving the deaf and hard of hearing
communities, and our new AT&T VRS app is one more way we're enhancing
our offerings," said Susan Johnson, senior vice president of AT&T
Customer Information Services. "Now our customers can make a VRS call
at Wi-Fi hotspots using iPhone 4, which makes VRS easier and more
accessible for everyone."
The AT&T VRS app is simple and easy to use. Users launch the app,
log-in, and then can either choose to place a VRS call by selecting
someone from their contact list or by manually dialing a number. The
app contacts an AT&T ASL interpreter who then initiates a FaceTime
video call with the user.** The interpreter will connect the ASL user
to the hearing person they are calling, and relays the conversation
between the two parties through ASL.
In addition to the app, AT&T VRS also offers a free software download
called AT&T Video Link that turns a computer or laptop into a video
phone. This software works on certain Macs and PCs enabled with a web
cam and a broadband connection.
AT&T VRS will also provide users with a ten-digit telephone number
and supports all the FCC required 911 emergency capabilities.
The AT&T VRS app is available for free from the App Store on iPhone
or at www.itunes.com/appstore/. For additional information about

A MOVIE IN A RESTAURANT
DeafDigest editor and his wife went to a restaurant
in Washington, DC.
That restaurant shows DVD movies for the benefit
of its patrons that prefer to watch a film than to
read a newspaper or to get into a conversation.
That movie always shows captions. It is not only
because the restaurant is noisy, but because patrons
that eat at a long distance from the screen may not
be able to hear the sound.
This would be perfect for deaf patrons.
DON'T FOLLOW ARLEN SPECTER'S EXAMPLE
Outgoing senator Arlen Specter made the news
by badmouthing everything about the Congress.
This is a poor example of being a sore loser.
Why is DeafDigest mentioning it.
About 25 years ago, DeafDigest editor worked
for a deaf service agency. Because of budget
problems, a deaf IT employee was laid off.
The CEO privately told DeafDigest editor he
hoped the deaf IT man would be rehired when
things got better.
Anyway, during the exit interview, the deaf
IT man badmouthed everything about the deaf
service agency.
A week later. The computer system crashed;
this breakdown was serious.
Naturally the deaf IT mean was not asked
to come back to fix the crashed system!
It just does not pay to badmouth the
employer, be it deaf or hearing.

A NFL GAME COIN FLIP
If you are watching the Indianapolis Colts-Tennessee Titans
game on TV on January 2nd, hopefully you will catch the glimpse
of Zachary Foster flipping the pre-game coin.
The winner of the pre-game coin flip decides whether to
receive the kick off or to kick off.
Zachary is deaf and is a 6th grader at the Indiana School
for the Deaf.
And as a sidebar, Jeff Fisher, the Tennessee coach, is deaf
in one ear and has been known to be sympathetic to the needs
of the deaf.
WHAT SOME INTERPRETERS MAY NOT KNOW!
There was a posting on a deaf yahoogroup that interpreters
working in San Diego, California, may need to file papers to
get a Business Tax Certificate. This is especially if they
get 1099 forms for income earned.
Those that do not file may be subject to additional
penalties. And that other cities may also require these
Business Tax Certificates!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As we celebrate this holiday season, it is fun to occasionally
reflect on our lives and the people whose lives we have touched, like
George Bailey did in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life."
Realtime captioners, CART providers, and court reporters use their
talents and skills to touch the lives of many people on a daily
basis. Without them, things would be very different for people who
rely upon their services.
If court reporters were not in the courtroom, there would be no
record of the important proceedings that take place. They preserve
the record for appeals and provide a vital service for judges,
attorneys, and people involved in litigation.
If CART providers were not in the classrooms, meetings, offices, and
other places they provide services, many people with a hearing loss
would not be able to participate in the activities that are very
important to their lives.
If realtime captioners were not available to cover news, sports, and
other live broadcasts, people around the world would miss information
that is necessary to function in this ever-changing world we live in.
These people touch the lives of millions of people every day. It
truly is a wonderful life.
FIXING PRESSURE HORNS
We, the deaf, may not always be able to hear pressure horns
mounted on vehicles.
Don't say that to Mohammed Shamin and Ishan Shamin, the father
and son team of Allahabad, a regional city in the northern part
of India.
They are deaf and they own a shop which repairs defective
pressure horns. While they cannot hear, they feel the vibrations
and know what is wrong and what is needed to fix.
They are considered to be one of the best pressure horn
mechanics in the city!

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
First it was Jack Gannon, who took time off from regular
duties at Gallaudet, to write the book "Deaf Heritage"
which debuted at the 1980 NAD Conference.
Now it is Larry Puthoff, who also took time off from
regular duties at Communication Service for the Deaf,
Sioux Falls, SD to write the book "The Transcendent Territory"
which rightfully is the encyclopedia of anything you wanted
to know about the deaf in South Dakota. This book is now
hot off the presses and the DeafDigest editor will be ordering

Why is it that we get more TV captions but less video
captions?
Yes, we have this Twenty-first Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010.
But this piece of legislation has a loophole. If the program
has never been aired on TV or cable or satellite, then
the provider does not have to caption it on the internet.
This loophole kills the Act of 2010.

Gallaudet University is looking for a Director of Public Safety to: direct the efficient and effective operation of the Department of Public Safety; maintain a safe and secure university and Clerc Center campus for residents and visitors; implement community policing and public relations initiatives, and educational and outreach public safety programs for students, staff, and visitors; develop training programs for all DPS personnel; manage the departmental budget; supervise or direct the supervision of all DPS managers or other supervisory personnel; manage parking and traffic control, and student, faculty and staff identification; and manage all aspects of fire safety on campus.
Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree and ten years experience in increasingly demanding management positions in complex institutions or in police or public safety field. (Master's degree may be substituted for some of the experience.) Familiarity with working in an educational setting and an understanding of student development. Excellent customer relations skills. Significant leadership, administrative, and budgetary experience. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with disciplinary issues in a K-12 and university environment. Valid driver's license required. Sign language skills required at time of application.
