Top stories about the deaf:
Airlines' attitude towards the deaf is what makes
some of them caption their movies on international flights and for some of them not to caption their
movies on international flights. They know that
FCC cannot touch them as long as flights are
not over the American landmass. This was the
issue raised in an editorial.
Replacing bad cochlear ears with newly grown cochlear
ears to help patients preserve their hearing? This
is what a group of British researchers are saying
that can be done within the next five to ten years.
Something new or just same old story with these same
old promises? Do not know.
CSUN is a huge campus, nearly 355 acres. CSUN also
has about 200-225 deaf students. How many TTY
machines (however, obsolete) are located on the
campus that deaf students can use in case of
emergencies? Just four!
The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit
ruled that Cochlear Australia infringed on the
copyright claims of the Alfred E. Mann Foundation
with respect to CI designs. The Federal District Court for the Central District of California
with respect to awarding of damages. Won't
be surprised if Cochlear goes to the Supreme
Court.
A deaf Floridian has filed a lawsuit against the
state over their refusal to allow him to take
truck driving tests in order to obtain truck
driving license. He said he already has a job
lined up - on one condition - that he gets his
truck driving license. State says no.

DISAGREEMENT WITH A SCHOOL DISTRICT
Many parents of deaf children have disagreements
with the school district.
An example would be that the parents want to send the
deaf child to a residential school but the district
wants the deaf child to go to a mainstreamed program.
If you live in Virginia, you may be lucky. The
state Department of Education has mediation services.
The parent and the district can go to mediation
and hopefully solve this disagreement issue.
Does your home state have it? Maybe you may need
to find out.

Lip reading tale
A deaf man and a hearing man were having
a casual conversation.
The deaf man thought hearing man said:
Do you like lifer?
Lifer as in liking something for life?
Hearing man actually said:
Do you like liver?

WHAT IS AN EX-ORALIST?
is it a person that graduated from oral school but finally learned
ASL at Gallaudet or NTID?
or
is it a person that always hid his signs at the oral school
that he graduated from?
You decide!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
People have to be careful not to look at realtime captioners as if they are machines or robots of some sort. Occasionally a CART captioner may be told to sit in a corner of a room so that he or she won’t be in the way. Many of the speakers might turn their backs on the captioner as they are speaking.
What you have to remember is that if the captioner cannot hear or understand what is being said, he or she cannot accurately transcribe what is being said. It is important that the client communicate with the CART captioner about whether the captioner should interrupt in a situation like this.
Some people do not want the CART captioners to interrupt the proceedings. They want CART captioners to just do the best that they can and put in parentheticals like “inaudible” or “indiscernible” if they cannot hear or understand what is being said. Many CART captioners will not interrupt the proceedings unless they have been instructed to do so in advance by the CART consumer because some CART consumers want the captioner to remain as inconspicuous as possible.
If you are working with a CART captioner and you would like him or her to interrupt more frequently if he or she cannot hear or understand, please make sure you communicate that to the CART captioner.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
There are serious behavioral problems on the
Mackworth Island, which houses the Governor Baxter
School for the Deaf, in Maine, not too far from
Portland.
Serious behavioral problems, yes, but whoa -
it has nothing to do with human beings!
The island is overrun with wild, unruly turkeys,
the source of these behavioral problems. The
state fish and game officials stocked the island
with birds two years ago as part of a conservational
program. This plan backfired since these birds
block the road and deposit their droppings everywhere.
The school officials need to make a decision to
solve this behavioral problem.
And this is not a new problem. Way back in the
late eighties the island was overrun with menacing,
wild dogs!

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
DeafDigest has mentioned Mojo Mathers of New Zealand
who is hoping to become the nation's first deaf elected
MP. Present polling trends have been favorable to her
Greens political party. If her party gets at least
12 percent of vote, then Mathers gets in as the new MP.
editor's note:
she continues as the MP
