- What the best stories are saying about the deaf?
The Royal National Institute for Deaf People Scotland
has complained that the deaf people are being
underserved at audiology departments, lacking the support they deserve. And even worse, members of the audiological do not deal well with the deaf patients.
Interpreting at the annual meeting of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science has become
a challenge for interpreter Maureen Wagner. These
sessions are heavy with terminology in science that
every day interpreters do not sign for these words.
Interpreters, not only must get advance copies of
the speeches and then to discuss with the deaf
participants their preferred signs and their preferred
sign language.
- Very Hot News
Regal Cinemas said they will provide captions. Just
that the wording of their announcement seems to be
tentative and vague - that captions will come when the theaters go digital, and at theaters that have already shown captions. One of the Regal corporate officers has a deaf child - and possibly this was the motive. Regal said captions will begin in Seattle and then roll out eventually to the rest of the nation.
DeafDigest will wait and see if captions are at
all Regal theaters and not at selected Regal
theaters.
- Sunday February 20th
Ketsirin Wuttiwong, a deaf woman, upset about the government
not treating her for her deafness, got up on the stage
and interrupted the speech given by Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. She was led off the stage by security personnel, but not before she displayed the printed sign for the audience to
observe. The prime minister thought the interruption was
staged until the police told him it was not that so.
- Monday February 21st
The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Conference 2011
began its sessions at Atlanta. Next year it will be in
St Louis - and already, the anti-oral factions in the area
are working on making their presence known. One of the plenary
speakers was Howard Rosenblum, the next NAD CEO, come April 1st.
- Tuesday February 22nd
Aaron Kubey, director, National Theatre of the Deaf, will be
leaving his position on June 30th, citing the need to
pursue new endeavors.
- Wednesday February 23rd
A debate is going on in Great Britain over the
Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Some are saying
DLA is a means of income for the disabled, the
deaf included. Others are arguing that DLA should
be used to allow the deaf people to find jobs.
.....
(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)
....
Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
Every once in a while, a deaf person, not knowing sign
language or being able to communicate in any way possible,
is arrested by the police. And this individual struggles,
trying to understand the proceedings in the courtroom.
There is one going on in Iqaluit, located in the remote,
Arctic section of Canada. This deaf man, of Inuit background,
knows very little Inuit Sign Language, not enough for him
to follow the interpreter's signs. While he has pleaded guilty
of a crime, did he really understand his wrongful doings,
and the consequences of him pleading guilty.

WORLD'S WORST DEAF MESS
What was the World's Worst Deaf Mess? It is the
cancellation of the Winter Deaflympics, at the
very last minute.
Whose fault it is? Jaromir Ruda, the chief
organizer of the Winter Deaflympics, said the
Slovakian government promised to help with
money.
But the Slovakian government said they never
promised to help with the money.
There will be many lawsuits, that will keep
the courts and lawyers very busy.
It is the World's Worst Deaf Mess that has
hurt all of us everywhere in the world.
Hope we will see smooth operations in our
future Summer Deaflympics and Winter Deaflympics.

DEAF BUSINESSES AND HEARING BUSINESSES
What is the difference between big Deaf Business
and Big Hearing Business?
Big hearing businesses such as IBM, Microsoft,
Ford, etc - have stocks that are bought and sold
every day. We can look up their financial statements
and find out if these businesses make money or not.
It is very different with Deaf Business. These are
private. Their financial statements are a secret. The
only one that knows is the IRS!

A COMMENT ON A WEB SITE
Someone made this comment after reading a feel-good
newspaper story about a deaf person. It went like this:
This is a great achievement by the deaf in this harsh
hearing world
Harsh? Well, the world is also harsh for many hearing
people all over the world. The deaf is not the only
one subject to this harsh world.
A SUCCESSFUL DEAF PERSON WE NEVER KNEW ABOUT
Mention the name C. Earl Tingstrom, Jr, and we will all
show stares in our faces. He passed away recently at the age of 81.
Earl, who was deaf, owned Sherman Laboratories
in Baltimore, which performed medical lab services for
medical clinics in the city-wide area.
After he sold is business and retired, he became an
avid boater and then joined an organization which
advocated boating safety on all waters.
He did not sign and relied on lipreading to get by.

RESPONSE FROM MARK DOLLEY
Mark Dolley, the new CEO of the Deaflympics group, that
oversees Deaflympics and World Deaf Championship events,
sent email to DeafDigest editor.
In the email are the following contents:
his vitae and background at:
http://deafdigest.com/icsd1/
his photo at:
http://deafdigest.com/icsd2-2/
crossing the finish line at Lausanne at:
http://deafdigest.com/icsd3/
Questions remain - is he hard of hearing and does he know
sign language? It wasn't addressed in the email.
At any rate, DeafDigest told Mark there are two goals:
1. to help struggling nations with their funding issues for participation in Deaflympics
2. to ward off strong challenges from the Paralympic group
for us to affiliate with them.
Oh, another thing - he was born in Baltimore!
DON'T PHYSICALLY CHALLENGE SUSY EVANS
Susy Evans works for the Dyfed-Powys Police Department
in Wales. When not busy at her job, she is into karate. In a long career in karate, she has won black belts, gold medals in national and international events, and has taught many classes in this sport. The Queen has given her honors.
She is deaf.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being constantly asked:
who do you work for?
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
One thing we should always keep in mind in reading through
captioning errors is that when a mistake happens, sometimes
the correct word will not look at all like what actually
appeared on the screen.
The main reason for this is because captioners are writing
primarily phonetically and not how a word is spelled. For
instance, the word "beau" is pronounced "bo," but there is
no "o" in it. The word "beauty" is pronounced with a "u"
sound, but the "u" is the third vowel in the word.
A couple examples of this would be:
- The builder wanted to put laundry shoots in his homes.
- He said the meat would no longer be pervade.
These should be:
- The builder wanted to put laundry chutes in his homes.
- He said the meat would no longer be purveyed.
A PERSPECTIVE AND A PERSPECTIVE
A sentence on a web posting read like this:
Hearing people tend to think deaf people think differently than hearing people, and that's not entirely true
Well, there is a Deaf Perspective and a Hearing Perspective.
Deaf people see to develop their own perspective. Hearing people
hear to develop their own perspective.
And to complicate things, there is also a Hard of Hearing
Perspective!

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The Deaf and the Law:
Should we, the deaf, be concerned that there are
many courts in USA without judges sitting on them?
Yes, according to Disability Rights activists.
For one reason or other, there are over 100
judicial vacancies. Each Obama appointee encounters
fierce congressional opposition - leaving these
seats fully vacant.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The Supreme Court has voted 5-4 not to allow the Congress to
have the authority to allow state employees to file ADA-related
employment claims.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Vote buying at its best, or worst, in Florida? The
Florida Citizens For Term Limits has offered free hearing
aids, no questions, asked, for state legislators that have
voted to extend term limits.
Two legislators turned down the offer; 125 other
legislators took up on this offer of these free hearing
aids.
Even when these legislators do not need hearing aids
they still accepted these freebies. This is troubling because
there are thousands of needy Florida residents that cannot
afford hearing aids.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Why is it that many hearing people fake "fully understanding"
what the deaf person is trying to say even when they do not
understand a single word? They try to get away with it my
