-- the invisible sign language
What is Invisible Sign Language? The February 2015
edition of Readers' Digest ran a piece about
a TV character that worked in a forensics crime
lab. It said that character Abby Sciuto (played
by NCIS actress Pauley Perrette) is fluent in
sign language. Well, she has never used ASL in
any of these NCIS episodes. This is why it is
the Invisible Sign Language!
-- a "star" interpreter
Are interpreters, both deaf and hearing, supposed to
be cast as "rock stars"? No, but last year newspapers
played up a woman who fascinated the hearing audience
with her interpreting at New York City political speeches.
And now this, the newspapers are also playing up
a deaf interpreter who wowed the audience with his
interpreting of the mayor's speech. Maybe it is only
in New York where fascinating interpreters are called
rock stars by hearing people that know nothing about
sign language!
-- a war in the Deaf Community
There was a posting on a web site about smartphones
and the deaf. It says that smartphones destroy
deaf clubs! Why? The writer said deaf people would
rather chat with each other through their smartphones
instead of face to face at deaf clubs. Sad to say,
the writer is probably correct - but with one
exception - deaf people love to chat with each
other at Starbucks!
