SERIOUS ON TELEPHONE OR JUST FOOLING AROUND?
A deaf employee's desk is next to a hearing employee's
desk.
The hearing employee is planning to retire. He has to train
a new employee about the job duties and tasks.
The retiring employee picked up the telephone, talked for a
long time, laughing all the time, etc.
The new hearing employee waited a long time for the
telephone conversation to stop. This new employee probably
knows if it was a business call or if it was a personal call.
The deaf employee, watching the whole thing, cannot tell
if it was a business or a personal call.

WORTH IT TO ATTEND OPEN HOUSE?
A new store had an open house, offering free refreshments
and free wine for visitors.
A deaf person reads the open house invitation. Should he come
in and get free refreshments for himself? Or should he stay out
and ignore the invitation?
He knows if he walks in, the salesman will come to him and
hope to sell him the store products - and there will be
awkward conversation. The deaf person cannot speak and the
salesperson does not know ASL>
This is the reason why DeafDigest editor ignores these
Open House invitations.

A CONTRAST BETWEEN DEAF EMPLOYMENT AND INTERPRETERS
A paradox is going on in the Newcastle area of
Australia.
Employment opportunities for the deaf is getting
better - but they require interpreters. And when
the supply of interpreters is low, then future
job seekers and future prospective employers
may be impacted!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
my nephew is very good with fingerspelling; he learned it
from the Boy Scouts
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories,
please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Because realtime captioners and CART providers do not use the QWERTY keyboard, the types of errors that they make are different than someone who is typing on a computer keyboard.
Some people may think that captioners don't know the difference between simple words. If a stenocaptioner strokes the steno for "rain" instead of "rein," it is not because the captioner does not know the difference between those two words. It may just be
that the captioner stroked the wrong stroke on the steno keyboard.
Homophones are difficult for many captioners because they are words that sound the same but are spelled differently. Captioners are trained to write phonetically, so when two words sound the same, the
captioner has to devise a system to distinguish between the two words.
One of the solutions is to add an asterisk to the steno so that the strokes will be different. But now the captioner has to remember which stroke gets the asterisk: Do I add the asterisk to "guild" or "gild"?
If you ever see a sentence captioned something like, "The Army kernel went to visit the sergeant," remember that the words "colonel" and "kernel" sound the same, and the captioner is writing phonetically.
The captioner probably knows the difference between those words, but he or she just didn't write the steno to get it to translate properly.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
being always assumed deaf people are mutes or even dumb!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
What is reasonable accommodation and what is not? This is
the big question behind a lawsuit a deaf family is filing
against a swimming club for not providing an interpreter
for swimming lessons. The club would not provide an
interpreter even when the deaf family showed them the ADA
rules and regulations. This lawsuit is taking place in
Minnesota.
.......
Deaf people can do anything
we have a deaf person who was a
-- cookie manufacturer
.....
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
A deaf man was ejected from the premises at the Conservative political party gathering in Belleville, Ontario. His crime? Carrying a sign protesting lack of interpreters at this event.
Double standards? Yes. When Gary Malkowski, a deaf man, won election for a MP post in Ontario, he was given interpreters immediately.
Yet when a deaf man, just wanting to follow the political proceedings, wanted interpreters, his reward was getting thrown out.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
When the deaf and the blind put together a TV program,
what is the best compliment?
It is the comment by the studio director:
Some clients don't even know that we are deaf
This is in reference to the work of Asvo Bergen,
an agency serving the deaf and the disabled in
Bergen, Norway. A group of deaf and blind employees
work together in editing the programs to be shown
on television.
They use special devices that help them when
editing these programs.
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
An oldie TV episode - The Waltons; The Foundling (1972)
was shown on TV this week. It was about a 6-year old
deaf child left on the doorstep at the Waltons residence.
This deaf child had no language skills, and the mother
felt she would be better off "adopted" by the Waltons than
to be sent to a county home for unwanted children.
"Miraculously" over a 4-day span, this child picked up
fingerspelling and accumulated many new words into her
vocabulary. There was debate on what to do with the
abandoned deaf child - her parents, the Waltons, the
physician and the town sheriff. All good things must
come to a happy end - and this abandoned deaf child
was reunited with her parents.
Big issue - no one "discussed" the educational needs
of this deaf child, much less bringing up the existence
of Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind - inasmuch
as the plot was in a rural area near Richmond!
.......
Lipreading: What did that person say?
The boss asked the deaf employee to type something on the envelope
The deaf employee thought the boss said:
Sweet Tea
He actually said:
Suite C
