News of the Week:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Brenda Keller
who departed us.
Brenda was in charge of the Post Office, the Cafeteria
and the Snack Bar on the Gallaudet campus.
Said a person who knew her:
Easily one of the most stressful jobs on campus, but she
always did it with a smile, a laugh, and kind words for
everyone. A practical person she was, a trademark was
a pencil stashed onto her hair, at the ready to write
down notes or to communicate with a non-ASL person.
Her son was a firefighter, his firehouse stationed
on the Gallaudet campus, on the fringes.
She will be sorely missed by everyone on the
Gallaudet campus. They all loved her dearly.
...
At Gallaudet, on the undergraduate and graduate
levels, there is a number of deaf-related majors.
And at NTID, there are two deaf-related majors, plus
a certificate program in Deaf Studies for students that
major in something else. And going one up, RIT offers
ASL and Deaf Studies courses; and a new minor in ASL
Studies will be coming up soon.
Now, with what Gallaudet and NTID/RIT offers,
it is interesting to see the announcement by
University of Bristol's Centre for Deaf Studies of a
new masters major in Deafhood Studies.
DeafDigest editor is not quite sure if there is a
difference between deaf-related majors at Gallaudet
and NTID/RIT and the newly launched Deafhood Studies
in Great Britain.
Perhaps diversity leads to interesting, but different
viewpoints on Deaf Culture and Deafhood!
...
Maple Woods Community College, in Missouri, may close
up its sign language interpreting program, leaving
Johnson County Community College as the only one in
the metro area.
Why may it close up? Low enrollment is the reason.
Low enrollment in bad economy when demand for
interpreters is at an unparalleled high.
Something is not right.
...
Gallaudet University's Theatre Arts Department presents
URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL
on April 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18 at 8:00 pm.
and
April 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 2:00 pm.
in Elstad Auditorium. All performances are open captioned.
URINETOWN, directed by Monique Holt, is a hilarious tale of
greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when
water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city,
a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year draught, has
led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The
citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single
malevolent company that profits by charging admission for
one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero
decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them
all to freedom!
Appropriate for patrons 12 years old and up.
Tickets:
- Full-time Gallaudet students who have paid the unit fee - one
free ticket with ID;
- non-Gallaudet students with ID: $10 online, $12 at the Box Office
Window;

SIGN LANGUAGE AT THE AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE
For many years, the brokers at the American Stock
Exchange used special sign language to communicate
buy and sell orders with each other. Sign language
is no longer used because of computers.
Many years ago, two Coda brokers worked at the
American Stock Exchange. One day they used ASL to
chat with each other on the trading floor for a
few minutes.
The American Stock Exchange managers were upset
about it, and these two Coda brokers were told
never again to use ASL on the trading floor.
These managers were afraid that other brokers
would think the Codas were using ASL as a code to
hide their buy and sell instructions!
American Stock Exchange is no more. It was
purchased by New York Stock Exchange and the
name was changed.

A PERFECT JOB FOR THE DEAF
For us, the deaf, many jobs are not
perfect. These jobs require communications
with hearing people. We try to communicate
with hearing people by written notes, by
gestures, by lipreading, etc.
But there is a perfect job, and it
requires a lot of sign language skills!
It is Scuba Diving classes. Scuba
divers, while under water, communicate
by sign language.
A deaf man in England has been employed
as a Scuba trainer, using underwater
sign language, to train his hearing students.
For him, it is a perfect job.

THE STRANGEST REFERRAL EVER
The Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Maryland
was created not that too many years ago by an act of
legislation.
And it stands as one of the strangest referrals ever.
As the bill weaved its way through the legislative system,
one committee referred it to the Environmental Matters
Committee.
Environmental Matters concern itself with pollution and
greening issues. Since when is deafness considered an
environmental matter?

CARELESS NEWSPAPER REPORTING
On a Massachusetts newspaper web site it said that
a local program on hearing loss will feature a speaker,
a local woman, from Self Help for Hard of Hearing. It also
said she has formed Self Help for Hard of Hearing as a
national group!
This is careless reporting. The Self Help for Hard of Hearing
has been renamed Hearing Loss Association of America three
years ago. And the person who founded Hearing Loss Association
of America was the late Rocky Stone, way back in 1979.
TO BE DEAF IN MUMBAI
The city of Mumbai, in India, was formerly known as Bombay.
Approximately 14 million people are residents of Mumbai.
And Mumbai is known to be the commercial and entertainment
hub of India.
This being said, one would think residents of Mumbai
would be enlightened and tolerant of people less fortunate
than they are.
Not necessarily that so. A deaf child living in Mumbai is
not allowed to go out; parents stash the child at home,
hidden from public view.
Shame? Ignorance? Prejudice? All of them possibly!
DEAF TALK OR COP TALK
When deaf people get together, they sometimes talk
in abbreviations. And when cops get together they
also talk in abbreviations.
The cops use numbers. Examples are:
6 - major disturbance
18 - Fire alarm
28 - Sick person
And so on. But when we talk about:
MCE - Manually Coded English
Sim-Com - Simultaneous Communication
TC - Total Communication
AVT - Auditory Verbal Therapy
SSS - Sign-Supported Speech
Then which is worse - deaf talk or cop talk?
MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF
- Jackie Robinson, pioneering African-American major league
baseball player
- stopped by 47 School for the Deaf (NYC) one afternoon to
donate a brand new hearing aid to a deaf student whose
family could not afford it
The student was thrilled to be getting a free hearing aid.
Sad to say, he rarely used it; it lay collecting dust
in his bedroom at his home, rarely wearing it at school.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
If a realtime captioner or a CART provider encounters a word
that he or she believes may not be in his or her dictionary,
the captioner has to make a choice in a split second of what
to do.
If the captioner writes the word phonetically on the steno
machine and it is not in the dictionary, it may come up as
something very confusing to the consumer.
However, captioners and CART providers are not nearly as fast
at fingerspelling words letter by letter as they are when
writing phonetically.
For example, if a CART writer was writing along and encountered
the word "decibel," he or she might question if that word has
come up before and whether or not it was in the computer
dictionary.
If the captioner went ahead and wrote it phonetically and it
wasn't in the dictionary, it might come up something like
"December bell" or "did he say bell."
If the captioner decided not to phonetically write that word,
then he or she might attempt to fingerspell it, but some
captioners are quicker at fingerspelling than others, and it
may appear as though there was a delay in the captioning.
if you have a question on any of the CART issues, do email:
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
it will be forwarded to the CART operator for a possible response
in this weekly DeafDigest section.

Crash course on the Digital Television Transition
This is a continuation of our weekly educational column on
addressing concerns about the analog TV shutoff and the final
transition to digital TV which is scheduled to occur on or
before June 12, 2009.
Question this week:
I have a portable analog TV that I use on camping trips and it
uses batteries, not electricity. What about converter boxes that
use electricity? I'm concerned about being able to get weather
reports during storms.
Answer:
While many converter boxes do require electricity, there are
some available that use batteries. One example is
Winegard's battery-powered RCDT09A DTV converter box.
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/10/03/winegards-battery-powered-rcdt09a-dtv-converter-box-gets-review/
A more extensive article about battery-operated converter
boxes can be found at this link:
http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/digital-transition-answers/2008/10/the_wonders_of_a_batterypowere.php
DTV Update:
AmeriCorps < http://www.americorps.org/ > is partnering with the FCC
to help consumers physically hook up their converter boxes or
antennas in their homes.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
Lefties vs righties? Deaf lefties vs deaf righties?
Hearing lefties vs hearing righties? Who is more prone
to deafness - lefties or righties?
A team of researchers conducted a survey that was
posted on a medical web site.
Conclusion - lefties are a bit more "deafier" than
righties.
DeafDigest editor is a lefty and he is deaf. Is being
a lefty a reason why he is deaf?
DeafDigest editor does not believe it, only because
a huge majority of deaf people are righties!

countercharges of assault involving a deaf son

father then pulled out a pistol on his
son. A scuffled ensued, and both the deaf son
and the hearing father were arrested on
separate assault charges
result:
stay tuned!
comment:
the hearing father is 78 years old; the deaf son
is 54 years old; interesting to see that the
parents, of so many years of raising their deaf
son, could not understand what he was saying.
So sad, and so unnecessary.

DeafADA Issue of the Week:
Q. I have read about The ADA Amendments Act.
Exactly what is this all about?
A. It has two parts -
(a) it prevents accommodation claims in regarded-as cases; and
(b) its legislative history confirms that the entire ADA should
be broadly construed in favor of people with disabilities and
their rights
