THE CAR BATTERY
A deaf driver was driving for a long time with a
weak battery. There was no warning signal on the dashboard
about a weak battery.
A hearing friend happened to hear the car engine and
said "your battery is weak; I will jump the battery for you"
How did the hearing friend know? He said he heard clink,
clink while the engine was turning and knew the battery was
weak.

Two Gallaudet friends were playing basketball
at the Gallaudet Field House.
One day one friend was wearing a sweatshirt with a
logo of a small town. The other friend looked at the
logo and was puzzled and asked few questions about it.
Then after they were chatting with each other, they
realized they were 5th cousins - they compared their
family trees and were shocked they were related!

Pampered Chef, etc) and being "forced" to interpret because
all the people in the party are deaf.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Some people may not realize that most realtime broadcast captioning
and remote CART services are provided from captioners' homes. In the
early days of captioning, captioners worked from the offices of the
large captioning companies, but more and more captioners have begun
working from their homes over the last 25 years. Captioners need
home offices with the proper equipment and backup systems in place to
assure reliable coverage.
Probably the most important element in a captioner's home office is
electrical power. Depending on where a captioner lives and what sort
of backup is in place with other captioners to cover assignments, a
captioner may need an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in case of a
power failure. This will keep the captioner's equipment running for
15 to 30 minutes, which should be enough time to notify another
captioner to take over the assignment.
If a captioner does not have another captioner who could quickly take
over in an emergency, he or she will need to keep captioning for a
longer time in the event of a power outage. Then a generator might
be necessary.
If a captioner is captioning a news broadcast for a California
station where the weather is beautiful, it would be hard to explain
to the viewers that the captions were interrupted because of
thunderstorms in Texas.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
after being introduced to a deaf stranger, you are
immediately asked such questions such as "how did
you become deaf"?
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

The Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Maryland
was created not that too many years ago by an act of
legislation.
And it stands as one of the strangest referrals ever.
As the bill weaved its way through the legislative system,
one committee referred it to the Environmental Matters
Committee.
Environmental Matters concern itself with pollution and
greening issues. Since when is deafness considered an
environmental matter?

Chicago scheduled a seminar on what ADA is all about, and had

The Department of Counseling offers nationally-accredited masters. degree programs in school counseling and mental health counseling. It is our mission to prepare graduates to be multiculturally competent professional counselors able to work skillfully with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients of diverse backgrounds. The Department is currently seeking a full-time tenure track faculty member to join our dedicated faculty starting August 2014, contingent upon funding. Applicants with school counseling background and experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:
1. An earned doctorate in counselor education or closely related field. Exceptional candidates with doctoral degrees in progress may be considered.
2. At least three years of counseling experience, with deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals, preferably in a school setting.
3. Knowledge and skills in content relevant to the applicant's specialization.
4. Awareness of the cultural and educational implications of working with deaf students, and fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or demonstrated willingness to commit significant time and effort over several years to develop proficiency in ASL in accordance with Gallaudet's faculty guidelines.
5. Experience supervising counseling students or pre-licensed counselors, or substantial experience mentoring others.
6. Potential for competency in teaching, scholarship, and service.
7. Effective interpersonal and collaboration skills.
8. Knowledge of program assessment is preferred.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program. It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program. We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI. Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered. ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach. The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History.
2. Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.
3. Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate.
4. Provides academic advising.
5. Maintains regular office hours.
6. Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings.
7. Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
*NOTE: A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Community college teaching experience; experience with using multimedia technology in the classroom; interest and ability to create community-based events; experience in administrative tasks such as writing course proposals, syllabus design and annual reports.

The University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics seeks applications for a full-time Lecturer II position in the Signed Language Interpreting Program to begin August 2014. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate courses in American Sign Language (ASL) and signed language studies, and service.
The UNM Bachelor of Science degree in Signed Language Interpreting has been meeting the needs of the deaf citizens of New Mexico, the region, and indeed the country since 1983, having trained and graduated more than 300 professional interpreters in that period. The program is a part of the Department of Linguistics. The Department of Linguistics specializes in cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology. In addition to the linguistic study of signed languages, we have special strength in Native American linguistics and language revitalization, and Spanish linguistics.
Minimum Qualifications: - Master's Degree in ASL, deaf studies, linguistics, or related field
Preferred Qualifications: - A strong record of teaching ASL or related studies in a university or college setting
- Ability to teach courses in the interpreter education program
- Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues
- Bicultural; ability to interact comfortably in Deaf and hearing communities
- Native or near-native ASL competence
- Ability to assume administrative and to mentor lecturers and part-time instructors as needed

about a weak battery.
A hearing friend happened to hear the car engine and

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Some people may not realize that most realtime broadcast captioning
and remote CART services are provided from captioners' homes. In the
early days of captioning, captioners worked from the offices of the
large captioning companies, but more and more captioners have begun
working from their homes over the last 25 years. Captioners need
home offices with the proper equipment and backup systems in place to
assure reliable coverage.
Probably the most important element in a captioner's home office is
electrical power. Depending on where a captioner lives and what sort
of backup is in place with other captioners to cover assignments, a
captioner may need an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in case of a
power failure. This will keep the captioner's equipment running for
15 to 30 minutes, which should be enough time to notify another
captioner to take over the assignment.
If a captioner does not have another captioner who could quickly take
over in an emergency, he or she will need to keep captioning for a
longer time in the event of a power outage. Then a generator might
be necessary.
If a captioner is captioning a news broadcast for a California
station where the weather is beautiful, it would be hard to explain
to the viewers that the captions were interrupted because of
thunderstorms in Texas.

immediately asked such questions such as "how did
you become deaf"?

The Department of Counseling offers nationally-accredited masters. degree programs in school counseling and mental health counseling. It is our mission to prepare graduates to be multiculturally competent professional counselors able to work skillfully with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients of diverse backgrounds. The Department is currently seeking a full-time tenure track faculty member to join our dedicated faculty starting August 2014, contingent upon funding. Qualifications:
1. An earned doctorate in counselor education or closely related field. Exceptional candidates with doctoral degrees in progress may be considered.
2. At least three years of counseling experience, with deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals, preferably in a school setting.
3. Knowledge and skills in content relevant to the applicant's specialization.
4. Awareness of the cultural and educational implications of working with deaf students, and fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or demonstrated willingness to commit significant time and effort over several years to develop proficiency in ASL in accordance with Gallaudet's faculty guidelines.
5. Experience supervising counseling students or pre-licensed counselors, or substantial experience mentoring others.
6. Potential for competency in teaching, scholarship, and service.
7. Effective interpersonal and collaboration skills.
8. Knowledge of program assessment is preferred.

1. Teach courses in School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling.
2. Supervise students in fieldwork settings and provide academic advising and professional mentoring.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program. It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program. We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI. Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered. ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach. The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History.
2. Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.
3. Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate.
4. Provides academic advising.
5. Maintains regular office hours.
6. Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings.
7. Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

Individual will be required to travel within the state of Tennessee as well as outside the state as needed, while residing in Tennessee.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree and two or more years of experience in the design and implementation of public outreach, public relations or related marketing experience are required. - Experience in the telecommunication field, Traditional Relay Service or Captioned Telephone Service is a strong plus.
- Excellent presentation skills
- Ability to develop effective outreach and educational campaigns
- Ability to confidently communicate (oral & written) with a wide variety of audiences
- Ability to plan, schedule and execute multiple projects - Ability to understand and follow directions
- Capacity to develop and maintain effective working relationships with Relay Administrator, organizations within the public, private and non-profit sectors
- Knowledge of and ability to understand various communication modes used by current and potential relay users
- Familiarity with the user communities that could benefit from relay services:
* Senior Community
* Hard of Hearing Community - Able to travel alone - Captioned Telephone users are encouraged to apply
