Chris Hamilton TSD Athletic Director WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being invited to a special event by a deaf friend (Tupperware, Pampered Chef, etc) and being "forced" to interpret because all the people in the party are deaf. if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Some people may not realize that most realtime broadcast captioning and remote CART services are provided from captioners' homes.  In the early days of captioning, captioners worked from the offices of the large captioning companies, but more and more captioners have begun working from their homes over the last 25 years.  Captioners need home offices with the proper equipment and backup systems in place to assure reliable coverage. Probably the most important element in a captioner's home office is electrical power.  Depending on where a captioner lives and what sort of backup is in place with other captioners to cover assignments, a captioner may need an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in case of a power failure.  This will keep the captioner's equipment running for 15 to 30 minutes, which should be enough time to notify another captioner to take over the assignment. If a captioner does not have another captioner who could quickly take over in an emergency, he or she will need to keep captioning for a longer time in the event of a power outage.  Then a generator might be necessary. If a captioner is captioning a news broadcast for a California station where the weather is beautiful, it would be hard to explain to the viewers that the captions were interrupted because of thunderstorms in Texas. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF after being introduced to a deaf stranger, you are immediately asked such questions such as "how did you become deaf"? (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. Funding Source: State GENERAL SUMMARY:    The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program.  It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program.  We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI.  Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered.  ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach.  The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 1.    Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History. 2.    Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment. 3.    Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate. 4.    Provides academic advising. 5.    Maintains regular office hours. 6.    Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings. 7.    Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:    Master's Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. *NOTE:  A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process.
