Top stories about the deaf:
Do deaf people dream in ASL or in lipreading?
A Gallaudet student said it is extrasensory perception. It was written up in a newspaper
story.
Burger King honors Gallaudet. This hamburger
chain changed a store, next to Gallaudet,
to show all signs, including Burger King,
in ASL instead of letters.
Manchester (NH) School district is broke; the
mayor and the city council are arguing on
what to do with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Program.
Yosemite National Park, which cut back deaf
services, has brought it back.
The new CEO of the Hearing Health Foundation
is Nadine Dehgan.

A BIG LOSS IN DEAF HISTORY
A deaf man, whom DeafDigest editor knows from years back,
was a self-taught Deaf Historian. He never went to college
but had a lifelong interest in Deaf History. He would do
his research at Gallaudet library and at the Library of
Congress and write his findings in his notebooks.
At home he had many books in Deaf History plus many
notebooks.
He, however, never shared his findings with anyone,
pretty much keeping his discoveries to himself.
When he died, no one knew where to locate his
stuff. He lived alone and no close friends or family
members.
A sad waste in Deaf History.

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT OTHER DEAF PEOPLE
Many deaf people have so many deaf cousins that
they can't remember which cousin is with which
mother and father, etc.
A deaf friend was saying bad things about
another deaf person. His friend told him that
this deaf person is his very distant cousin,
but could not remember if it was 4th or 5th or
6th cousin, etc!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
When computer-aided transcription (CAT) was introduced, computers
were "taught" to translate the court reporters' steno notes. The
court reporters would edit their transcripts and define untranslated
or mistranslated words. They were "teaching" the computer to
recognize new steno strokes so that the next time that steno stroke
was used the computer would properly translate it.
In the 1980s, some court reporters connected their steno machines
directly to their personal computers, and realtime translation was
born. Realtime translation instantly translates a court reporter's
stenographic notes into English, and the English is displayed on a
computer monitor or projection screen.
Court reporters, who previously would have taken possibly two weeks
to prepare a transcript, are now allowing people to see how their
steno is being instantaneously translated. Even today, the number of
court reporters jumping into realtime continues to grow at a rapid
pace.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
An interesting issue the Deaf History
International (DHI) has brought up in its recent
newsletter is this -
What is Deaf History? Is it about deaf people
that helped create a Deaf Historical moment?
Or is it also about hearing people that have
helped create a Deaf Historical moment?
Cited as an example was Abbe Charles
Michel de l'Epee, a hearing man who pioneered the
teaching methods of the deaf.
Or even Edward Miner Gallaudet, who founded
Gallaudet University? He was not deaf.
Or even of Alexander Graham Bell. He was
not deaf.
These two distinguished hearing gentlemen
feuded for years over this ages-old ASL vs
oral issue. Part of or not part of Deaf History?
Bringing up this issue was Odd-Inge Schroder,
of Norway, the DHI president.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Several weeks ago DeafDigest mentioned Debbie Lauricella,
Lakeland, Florida, complaining that the Social Security
offices not being deaf-friendly. She won - as settlement
has been reached with offices in Lakeland, Jacksonville
and St. Augustine for them to become more deaf-friendly.
Brokering the deal was the Jacksonville Area Legal Aid
office.
