Top stories about the deaf:
The Paralympics publication said that deafness is
not a disadvantage in sports when playing against
the hearing.
The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has been said to show displeasure
with the bad treatment of the deaf and the disabled
by the British government.
There as a story in a newspaper in Nepal about a deaf man, age 70, that never saw a deaf person all
his life, and just learned how to use sign language.
It is not easy to learn signs at late age.
A interpreter bill has been brought up in the Washington House of Representatives. It proposes to eliminate the
RID certificate requirement and to replace it with
the state interpreting standards. The Deaf Community
is not too happy about it, and as a matter of irony
the person supporting the bill is a deaf educator!
The Jhenidah School for the Deaf in Bangladesh
was supposed to be ready after seven years of
building construction. It still has not been
opened – because of issues with money, school
control and political issues. In the meantime
deaf children have been waiting, to no avail.

ANTI-DEAF POLICE OFFICERS FIRED
There was a crime committed against a group of
deaf people. The police came to investigate
the crime, and did not arrest the hearing
criminals.
The top court was not too happy about it and
fired these police officers.
It took place in Pakistan!

SIGN LANGUAGE GESTURES THAT ARE INSULTING
The Washington Post ran a story of sign language
gestures, some of which are really insulting.
Giving examples of these insulting sign languages
was Gallaudet employee Melissa Malzkuhn. The
story will make you laugh if some of these signs
do not bother you.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
said an interpreter:
in the classroom I am an interpreter, not an editor. I have
attended graduation ceremonies where names of graduates
were not conveyed. I have been to programs were speakers
speak, singers sing while I stand, my hands still!
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
The steno for every word must be entered into a stenocaptioner’s personal dictionary in order for it to translate properly. Because words are written phonetically, a captioner might have multiple ways to write the same word, and every way must be entered into the dictionary.
Let’s take the word “baccalaureate.” This is a word that has five syllables and could be heard a number of ways. Some examples would be the phonetic sounds of BAK/A/LOR/E/AT or BAUK/LAUR/YAT or BA/KA/LOR/AT or BAK/LOR/YET. As you can see, there could be many, many ways to write this word.
Even if the captioner had all four of these ways entered in his or her dictionary, if the captioner heard it and wrote it as BAK/LAUR/YAUT and that combination of sounds was not entered in the dictionary, it might translate as “back lawyer yacht.”

A case is going on in Haarlem, a city near Amsterdam
in the Netherlands. A family from Afghanistan was not
given refugee status. That family has a deaf daughter.
The question facing the attorneys:
Is she permitted to have a CI operation even though
the government rejected the family’s request for
refugee status?

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
A Deaf Robot, or more specifically a
Fingerspelling Robotic Hand coming up on
the horizon?
Well, at a recent tournament in Sasagurimachi,
Japan to determine which robot is the best
robot, one of the robotic contestants was
a Fingerspelling Robotic Hand.
Could a Deaf Man carry on a conversation
with the Fingerspelling Robotic Hand? At this
point, doubtful since the “monster” only has
a range of 10 Japanese phrases.
The Fingerspelling Robotic Hand creators
are working on an expanded Robotic Vocabulary.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
A new pro soccer stadium across the street from
Gallaudet University? The DC United professional
soccer team that plays in the Major League Soccer
league, has been looking for a new stadium.
There are two sites in Washington, DC that has been
proposed as sites for the new stadium. One of the
sites is located in the Capital City Market,
which is across the street from Gallaudet University!
(it was not to be; a new stadium will be built
on the other side of town)

What is a CI?
Is it a hearing aid inside the head? No, says a
CI surgeon – it is a surgical implant that electrically stimulates nerves in the cochlea, or inner ear.
This surgeon will challenge anyone that says CI is
a built-in hearing aid!
