NIGERIA:

Deaf community in church

In Somolu, Nigeria, a church has become a gathering place for 50 to 60 Deaf worshippers each week. Unlike most churches in the country, services are conducted entirely in sign language, often synchronized with drumbeats. The pastor preaches in sign, and members wave their hands in response. Drums provide vibrations that guide people to pray, kneel, or celebrate. For many Deaf Nigerians, who are often isolated in traditional churches that don’t use sign language, this congregation offers belonging and support. It also challenges old beliefs, as Deafness was once seen as a punishment. Members here believe God understands sign language too. The church also reaches out to Deaf communities beyond Somolu. Nigeria is home to about 10 million Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, and this congregation is showing new ways to worship and build community.

UNITED STATES:

Award for Universal-AI program

Gallaudet University has received a $4.5 million USD award to launch a new graduate program in artificial intelligence (AI). The funding will cover tuition, stipends, and health benefits for 25 graduate students, with opportunities for 75 more students between 2025 and 2030. Gallaudet is one of just 15 universities nationwide selected for the award. The program will have two tracks: one focused on making AI datasets more inclusive, and another on developing legal and accessibility frameworks. It builds on the work of the university’s AI, Accessibility, and Sign Language Center. University leaders say the program will ensure Deaf students—and people with all disabilities—play a role in shaping future technology. AI can already turn speech into text, describe images and videos, and create tools that improve communication. The new initiative aims to expand these possibilities so that no one is left out as technology advances.
