Members of the Deaf community in Kansas City, United States (US), are facing significant challenges in accessing mental health care due to a lack of interpreters, limited availability of culturally competent providers, and inadequate support systems. According to a report by KSHB 41, there are only three mental health professionals fluent in American Sign Language within a 60-mile radius of the city. This scarcity forces many Deaf individuals to travel long distances or forgo care altogether. Cameron Symanski, president of the Olathe Club for the Deaf, explained some of the persistent barriers that they experience, saying, "Constantly being told no is something that you just get used to." He emphasized that mental health services should be prioritized for the Deaf community, who face the same mental health challenges as hearing individuals but lack equivalent resources.
A group of Deaf dancers from Kazakhstan called Sensitive Theater has recently won top prizes at an international festival in China. They took part in the “Lace of Tianjin 2025” competition, where over 700 people from around the world performed. The group won the highest awards for three dances: a traditional Kazakh dance called “Amanat,” a modern piece named “Eye of the Heart,” and a tango. Even though they can't hear the music, the dancers feel the beat through vibrations and learn the rhythm with practice, showing that anyone can be an artist.

A real estate agency in Singapore called ERA Realty Network, raised over S$320,000 for the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) through a nationwide charity campaign involving over 200 ERA teammates and partners. Their fundraising efforts included a 3 to 5 km charity walk where around 1,600 people joined and an online donation drive where agents tagged one another to raise awareness and contributions. The campaign also featured a themed walk in East Coast Park in Singapore and the active support of ERA’s senior management, staff, and partners. Marcus Chu, chief executive of ERA Singapore, said, “Deafness is an invisible challenge that often leads to isolation, depression or misunderstanding, especially when people cannot access the tools or support they need. This charity walk is our way of standing with the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard-of-Hearing community.”
Scott Garthwaite is a British Deaf chef. He is easy to remember because of his signature mohawk, dyed pink. He is a professional chef, who doesn’t only cook, but also hosts a show with children in the kitchen on British television. He is also a speaker on the topic of healthy eating. He likes to prove that deafness is not a hindrance and can push the boundaries of possibilities.
A premiere of a film recently took place in Moscow on May 7 at the Theater of Mimicry and Gesture. This film was shot by the Association of the Deaf of Russia which over the course of 5 months, the team collected stories of the Deaf during the war of 1941 to 1945. They found old videos, recordings, diaries and memories and created a film based on these findings. The film will now be shown in any city in Russia. This is a sign of respect for grandfathers and grandmothers for their experience in these difficult years.
