- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates John Forsythe who departed us.
Yes, Forsythe was not deaf - but in the early
days of closed captioning in the eighties, not too
many TV programs were captioned. Dynasty became
our most popular captioned program. Deaf
organizations knew better not to schedule
meetings on the evenings this program was aired!

John was probably the first hearing actor that
we, the deaf, loved to hate - because of his
wicked and scheming ways in these Dynasty
episodes.

- Hot Newspaper stories during the week:

Working with the FCC's Consumer Advisory Committee
http://deafdigest.com/fccadvis/

How to caption a difficult Shakesperian play?
http://deafdigest.com/shakespearecaptions/

- Very Hot News

The newspapers were hot all week regarding the
scandal over the Pope's squashing of the
church child abuse case with Rev. Lawrence Murphy and the long-closed St John's School for the Deaf in Milwaukee.

What was not mentioned in these stories, however,
was that the diocese of Milwaukee reached settlement
with some of the affected students. But the
settlement was sort of a joke - most got very
little money whereas one person, now deceased,
got about $200,000.

- Sunday March 28th

It was announced that the Broadway revival of
"The Miracle Worker" will close on April 4th.
This play portrays the growing up years of
Helen Keller. We will always remember the huge
protests by deaf actors when a hearing girl
was selected for the Helen Keller role.

Poetic justice? Well, no producers like to
lose $2.5 million, be it a deaf play or a
hearing play.

- Monday March 29th

Alicia Lane-Outlaw has been recognized by the
Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal as one of these
40 Under 40 outstanding individuals for her work
with the AllOut Marketing, Inc. She is also the
president of the Minnesota Association of Deaf Citizens.

- Tuesday March 30th

Sad news to report - the Detroit Day School for the Deaf
is slated for closing this coming June. Only 67 students
remain at the school and they will be mainstreamed in
other city schools. The parents are planning to protest
the closing, but it is felt that it will be useless.

- Wednesday March 31st

Something strange going on in South Dakota. The governor
vetoed a bill that would require the state department
of education to help with programs to educate the deaf,
saying the burden belongs to the board of regents..

Reading between the lines there seems to be a struggle
between State Education and Board of Regents on educating
the deaf, a responsibility no one wants, meaning shifting
the burden to the school districts ! And in the meantime
South Dakota School for the Deaf is suffering because of
low enrollment.

THE DEAF IN JAMAICA
Andrew Gallimore, not deaf, is the director of Labor
and Social Security, a government agency in Jamaica.
He gave a speech recently during a banquet with factory owners and manufacturers. He said that
the deaf are the best employees because they are
not bothered my factory noise and they do not
waste time gossiping with other hearing employees
and do not also waste time talking on the telephone!
He wants the manufacturers to hire the deaf.

DEAF & HEARING PARTERSHIP IN BUSINESS
Business partners is like a marriage. Some
partners get along with each other; some other
partners hate each other. Same thing with marriages.
During the 1980's a deaf partner did not get along
with the hearing partner; they were always arguing
with each other. The partnership broke up.
For a while the deaf man saw that he had no sales
in his business. He lost his customers. He was puzzled
until he realized the hearing ex-partner was stealing
his sales that were in the voice telephone recorder. This hearing ex-partner knew the voice telephone machine
password.
When the deaf person realized, he immediately changed
the voice telephone machine password. The stealing
stopped and the deaf man got new sales.

HIT BY A CAR
As long as there are cars, there will always,
unfortunately, be accidents. When a hearing person
is hit by a car, more often than not, it is not
a newspaper story.
But when a deaf person is hit by a car, it
becomes a newspaper story. This is in reference
to a deaf man that was recently hit by a car
while he was crossing the street.
Why are deaf victims of accidents quickly
becoming newspaper stories?
Is it because deaf people are not supposed to
be crossing the streets?
Deaf people have eyes!

PAYING THE PRICE IN JAPAN
In Japan, there is the bullet train network,
consisting of trains that travel as fast as
300 miles per hour. It links the largest Japanese
cities with minimal traveling time.
These trains have "noses" - which helps trains
overcome wind resistance.
To build these noses requires the use of
low cost hammers. These are the same type of hammers
that one can buy at a local hardware store.
Anyway, hammering the noses is a lifetime skill
that very few master craftsmen could master.
These craftsmen pay the price - years and years
of hammering the noses cause them to go deaf!

A HAZARD OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY
John C. Dvorak is a well known writer and broadcaster, touching on issues of high technology.
A recent column he wrote was titled "Nine Hazards of Modern Technology."
One of the 9 hazards he listed, is this:

Deafness. People used to go deaf from listening to too much heavy-metal music without ear protection; now they do
because of earbuds. I can't tell you how many people under the age of 30 can't speak without yelling and constantly
asking "What? Huh?" like 90-year-olds who refuse to get hearing aids. This sort of person is now part of the
technological society's landscape.

CONFESSIONS OF A DEAF STUDENT IN LAW SCHOOL

I am careful with interpreters I select for
my classes and workshops. I turn down interprerters
that do not dress professionally and appropriately.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

last week's feature was below:

a question like this -

do I respond to you, as the interpreter, when the deaf person says something to me?

this week's hated question as revised-

do I respond to the deaf person, or to you, when the deaf
person says something to me?

still same thing - both questions equally hateful !

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

"I think I'll drop out of school and become a CART provider or
realtime captioner." Have you ever heard someone say something like
this?

People have heard that you don't need a four-year degree to be a
CART provider or realtime captioner, and they think it is something
that they could achieve without much work or effort.

Realtime captioners use the same skills as court reporters, and what
many people don't realize is that realtime captioners are actually
among the cream of the crop as far as people using those skills.

Court reporters must learn speed and accuracy on the steno machine,
and they also must have good English grammar, vocabulary, and
punctuation skills and excellent listening skills and hearing.

In addition to possessing those skills of a court reporter, realtime
captioners and CART providers must be able to understand what is said
and write on their steno machine something they know will come up
correctly on their computer screen.  If they hear an unusual word or
term, they may have to fingerspell that word or use a synonym in
order to convey the proper meaning of the word.  They do not have
time to look up words in a dictionary or to research something
online.  They are required to have knowledge about a wide range of
topics.

Although formal education may not be required, a lot of practice and
real-world knowledge is necessary to be a good realtime captioner or
CART provider.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Deaf people were never allowed to drive cars in
China. This may change as the government is drafting
regulations to allow the disabled, the deaf, included,
to drive cars. Working on the regulations is the

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Could we, the deaf, be able to remote-order our Big Macs' while
driving?
In certain Southern California areas, motorists, hit by Big Mac
hunger pangs, could remote-order these goodies via radio transponders.
These transponders are the same ones they use to pay local expressway
tolls.
It wasn't made clear how is this experiment going to work. Does it
work via voice? All orders are not the same - some would want
a big coke, others a small coke; others a big fries, others a small
fries, and most important of all - what kind of hamburgers do they
want. If it is voice activated transponder, then the deaf, are, as
usual, left out in the lurch.

(editor's note: nothing came out of that innovation, and we, the deaf,
continue to be discriminated against when trying to drive in with
orders at fast food eateries)

When we see the name "Tonya Harding" in print, we
immediately associate it with the figure skater who tried
to arrange the maiming of her competitor in order to win
the coveted Gold in figure skating in the Winter Olympics.
Well, what about it? Tonya is into boxing, both as a
female boxer wannabe and as a boxing manager wannabe.
And she is trying to manage the budding boxing career of
a female boxer who is from Tulsa, Oklahoma and is deaf!
Sorry, do not yet know the name of that deaf female
boxer.
