DeafDigest dedicates these individuals that departed us:

- Tom O. Berg
He was a legendary track and field coach at Gallaudet
University and with USA Deaflympics team. He touched
many lives and influenced many people during his long
coaching career.
   His obituary is at:

http://www.legacy.com/Link.asp?I=LS000133705388X

- Francis Burton
Living in Washington, DC, he was the rare
interpreter that made the Deaf Community the
focus of his social life.
He started out his interpreting career as a
free lancer before moving on to the DC Courts
System interpreting office.

..

Gallaudet football

Gallaudet 10
Husson 7

now 3-2 for the season

Husson was leading 7-3 when Gallaudet scored the winning touchdown
with 1:47 remaining in the game; the game winning drive was generated
by a Husson mid-field fumble that Gallaudet pounced on.

Husson defeated Gallaudet 49-0 last season, hence today's win is a
52-point turnaround, one of the biggest in Gallaudet's football history

..

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

A clarification regarding HR 3200 and the
CI is in order.
According to a law office employee:

HR 3200 requires coverage for CI for children up to
age of 21. If the parent makes the CI decision, the
insurance company has to provide coverage.

The bill, in its full text. is at:

MARLEE MATLIN IN A NEWSPAPER IN SPAIN
Marlee Matlin is the rare deaf performer that has
had a few speaking roles.
Yet, it did not stop a newspaper in Spain from describing
her like as follows:

Also in 1986, the deaf and dumb actress Marlee Matlin won an
Oscar for her role in Randa Haines' Hijos de un Dios menor
('children of a lesser God')

Deaf and dumb? If a person has a speaking role then
that person is not dumb (meaning cannot talk at all).
Maybe that writer in that newspaper is dumb
(meaning just plainly stupid).

THESE EARLY PICTURES OF LIFE IN UTAH
History buffs may be interested in the early pictures
of life in Utah, way back in the 19th century.
Many of these pictures were taken by Elfie Huntington.
She was deaf!

A WRITER'S DANGEROUS ASSUMPTION
   A writer from India wrote:

The Deaf see themselves as a socio-ethnic minority, with a
fractured past but with a history and culture they are proud of

A socio-ethnic minority? Possibly and probably so.
A history and culture we, the deaf, are proud of? Possibly
and probably so?
But a fractured past? The dictionary defines fractured
as something broken. Is our past something that is broken?
DeafDigest does not think so, hence he is pointing his
finger at the writer from India for making a dangerous
assumption.
   That writer is Nandini Hebbar.

GETTING EVEN WITH WELLS FARGO
Last week DeafDigest mentioned Capitol One Bank
refusing to accept the identity of a deaf person even
when it was verified by a local banking officer.
A DeafDigest subscriber said that he was not able
to get Wells Fargo to validate his new credit card.
The bank insisted the deaf person use a TTY machine
even when he no longer has it.
He simply got even. He used his home town family
connections with a local bank to open a new
account. The local bank even accepted his relay calls
to discuss further banking business.
Big Fargo Wells's loss; little local bank's gain.

DEAF ISSUES

(short series; based on comments by educators
and deaf service professionals)

While we have many counselors that work with the deaf,
they are supervised by their superiors - but unfortunately
these supervisors focus on curriculum as opposed to
individual guidance

(series to continue until it runs out)

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked:

how long did it take you to learn sign language?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Although captioners and CART providers use steno machines
that have computers built in to record their steno
strokes, they also send these steno strokes to a laptop
or desktop computer which translates the steno strokes
into text.

These captioners and CART providers have their computer
dictionaries loaded in special software programs on their
laptop or desktop computers.

Many of the steno machines nowadays offer a small screen
where the captioner or CART provider can see translations
of the steno notes, but as far as getting those steno
strokes into a form that can be sent to an encoder or
displayed on a CART screen, a laptop or desktop computer
is generally necessary.

There are special software programs that hold "dictionaries"
that the captioners have created which tell the computer
how to translate each steno stroke that is written.

These programs are loaded on the laptop or desktop computer,
and the steno machine is hooked up either via a cable or
wirelessly to communicate with that computer.

HEALTH AND ADVOCACY INFORMATION
FOR PERSON WHO ARE DEAF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING:

Persons who are Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing are
grossly underserved by both the physical health and the
behavioral health care system. In many cases, the patient
as well as the health care provider who may provide service
to them, is unaware of laws that mandate the provision of
accommodations in the health care setting so that all
persons have equal access to health related information.

A new web site called http://www.healthbridges.info
was created by people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and hard
of hearing.

Each month the topics discussed will change.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

An article in the American Journal of Human
Genetics said that several hundred genes may
cause deafness.
DeafDigest is not surprised. Hardly a month
goes by with a new gene that is said to cause
deafness - so adding all these up may lead to
several hundreds!

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

(a reprint)

SUPREME COURT MAY NOT BE OUR BEST FRIENDS
We have our ADA. Is the Supreme Court above it? Probably,
according to one deaf attorney for a private law firm.
He said "The ADA does not apply to federal courts on
the argument that the Congress cannot tell the federal
judiciary what to do and vice versa."
Still continuing, the attorney said "the courts are
not accessible to the deaf; they refuse to allow sign
language interpreting or captioning for Court proceedings.
The one exception was when one deaf attorney needed
captions to argue one case (Rowley). We're pretty much
out of luck as far as accommodations are concerned
even though court decisions may affect us for years to come."

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

There is a flap going on at a high school in Vermont.
The school is producing a play but with a cruel irony!
The play focuses around a deaf character but the
school casting director has chosen a hearing student
to play the role - while asking the deaf student to
serve as the "consultant". The school said "it is a
commitment for the deaf person to help the hearing boy
to learn sign language."
Naturally the interpreter and the deaf student are
up in arms.

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

We, the Deaf Americans, suffer our daily dosages of
Captioning Bloopers. But we remain grateful that our
captioners are committed to perfection in their trade,
never mind that a blooper here and there may slip in.
Not that so in India. Said one Indian captioner:

The market is still growing. The existing team of
directors, translators etc are self-taught who have
bettered their art over the years of experience. We
don?t have a professional or government body that
offers training programs

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

We have established organizations for the deaf that
have been around for a long time. Examples are the
NAD, AgBell, TDI, etc.

We have been seeing many, many new organizations.

It seems when there is an issue that a group of
deaf individuals cannot agree on, a group would
split away from an established deaf organization
to create a new deaf organization.

Asked an old timer:

why cannot we all try to fix the issue instead of
seeing a break-away group setting up a new organization?
