Better known as Corky, he was, as one admirer described him, a great deaf leader who worked well with others. - Very Hot News Coalition of Students and Teachers (C.O.S.T.) has been formed at CSUN. It consists of students, both deaf and hearing, frustrated with state budget cuts affecting the quality of education on the campus. The COST idea was sparked by deaf students, and it spread like wildfire among the student body! .. - Sunday November 29th People First is becoming a movement, at least in Colorado. What this means is that individuals cannot be identified by their disability when writing up about them in newspaper stories. This means no more "deaf-mute" or "deaf-dumb" references to the deaf person in a newspaper story! Colorado? This state is expected to have this People First language bill introduced when the legislative body opens next year. - Monday November 30th Wireless captions in theater houses? Possible, for the benefit of deaf theater goers if an experiment in London succeeds. Airscript is a wireless captioning device capable of translating opera scenes in eight languages, English included. Said a critic: It shows multiple lines, so that you don't have to spend all your time staring at it and away from the stage - Tuesday December 1st To love Disney or to hate Disney? Well, Disney is claiming to be the first studio to have captions on its 3D movies. The 3D movie - Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is the first one to be 3D captioned, at least in United Kingdom, not yet in USA. - Wednesday December 2nd A documentary, Riding High, produced in Great Britain, portrays 8 deaf teens learning how to ride motorbikes, is an effort to show hearing audiences on how to best deal with the deaf and to shatter all these deafness myths. This documentary will be aired on selected British TV channels. (Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition) .. Deaf Miscellaneous stuff: A proposed bill in New Zealand is making the deaf community upset. It has been proposed that hearing people, injured in place of employment and becoming deaf as a result, be entitled to lifetime compensation equal to six percent loss of their work income. This would leave deaf employees out in the cold because injured deaf workers are still deaf after the injury and not subject to such compensation. ................................................................ ................................................................ Providing Solutions for People with Hearing Loss. ................................................................ ................................................................ A DEAF HOUSE AND A POLICE WARRANT Sometimes the police with a warrant, comes to a Deaf House. These police officers would yell for the people in the house to come out or to knock hard on the door. Would the police know that the people in the Deaf House cannot hear? Always scary to see what will happen if the police breaks down the door to find that the people in the house are deaf. There are many workshops to teach the police on how to deal with the deaf. DeafDigest hopes the workshops will explain to the police about the Deaf House. - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/deafhouse/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS FACTORY AND THE DEAF Could a deaf person work in a factory that makes musical instruments? Many workers must hear to make sure that the instruments work perfectly. Well, there was a deaf man that worked at a saxophone factory for 52 years. And another deaf man that worked at the ukuleles factory for 40 years. Impossible? Not to them! - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/musicalinstruments/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) THESE WHITE HOUSE PARTY CRASHERS The media has been constantly focusing on the White House party crashers - Tareq and Michaele Salahi. They craved attention and self-importance. These traits remind DeafDigest editor of several deaf individuals. One was the director of a state commission serving the deaf and the hard of hearing. He was not so concerned about helping the deaf in need in the state as he was about enhancing his self-importance. He made sure to get invited to the right parties, got into the right photo shoots with the right state and federal political officials and so on. The other one did not achieve lofty political heights but was constantly getting invited to these same parties and making sure he was photographed with the right hearing personalities (sports, politics, Hollywood people, etc). He proclaimed to do this all on behalf of the deaf, which was simply hot air. There are others, but above is enough as examples. Hearing fame-seekers; deaf fame-seekers, same thing. A CI HAZARD What is a Cochlear Implant hazard? It has nothing to do with potential medical dangers or of accidental activating of some metal detection systems. Simply - according to a web posting, that in one college, the exam proctors were alerted to students wearing CI. These proctors though these were radio transmitters allowing these students to get answers to the exam questions from someone on the outside! ................................................................ DEAF COMMUNITY IN BRISTOL Bristol is a city in England, which in a newspaper story, has a strong deaf community. Why is the community so strong? Because of Bristol Deaf Center, a school for the deaf and deaf programs at Bristol University. Pretty much reminds us of - Washington, DC metro area, because of Gallaudet University and Rochester, NY area because of NTID/RIT. DEATH OF A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER There was a newspaper story on retired police officer Jack Collins, Cincinnati, Ohio, who passed away. The story mentioned this: Mr. Collins also was an advocate for providing hearing impaired services in the police department during his years on the force. He worked to get sign-language interpreters into district offices and his doctoral dissertation concentrated on policing in the deaf community. He is one police officer we never knew about and was probably an unsung hero in the Cincinnati Deaf Community. A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK Why are relay providers paid nearly $400.00 per hour? Is that too much money? No. Relay providers are a business. These businesses need to recoup their investment costs in equipment and overhead and to make a reasonable profit. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? A hearing person telling the interpreter, standing next to a deaf person: please tell him to do this..... or please tell him to do that... if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Have you ever experienced your hands shaking when you had to do some sort of performance in public? What many people may not realize is that nervousness may play a role in the accuracy of some court reporters, captioners, and CART providers. As a court reporting/captioning student sits down at the steno machine to take a speed test, that person may find that as the dictation begins, his or her hands begin to shake, and it may become difficult for that person to hit the correct keys. Just like it may happen with public speaking or performing, the captioner's hands may shake or tremble in new or unfamiliar circumstances. The first time a captioner goes on air, it may take a few seconds or a few minutes for that person to calm down and to become more accurate. Some court reporters or captioners learn different techniques in an attempt to eliminate the nervousness. They may practice relaxation exercises like meditation, yoga, visualization, and deep breathing. Some have tried hypnosis to eliminate the anxiety. Usually after a short period of time, the person will settle down and be able to write cleanly and accurately, but it's that first few minutes in a new or unfamiliar environment that is very difficult for some court reporters or captioners. ................................................................ ................................................................ weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com updated every Monday ................................................................ ................................................................ In many cases, the patient as well as the health care provider who may provide service to them, is unaware of laws that mandate the provision of accommodations in the health care setting so that all persons have equal access to health related information. A new web site called http://www.healthbridges.info was created by people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and hard of hearing. Each month the topics discussed will change. Please visit the site and let us know about topics that you want to learn more about. http://www.healthbridges.info ................................................................ ................................................................ Hot DeafNews boring, but important! GINA has kicked in. GINA? It stands for Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. It prohibits employers and insurance carriers from discriminating against people that may have genetic issues, For us, the deaf, it is simple, deaf of deaf marrying deaf or deaf cannot be discriminated against because of possibly of bearing deaf children! .. The Deaf and the Law A perceived hearing person lost his job and filed a lawsuit, on charges of discriminating against the deaf. The lawsuit shocked everyone, the employer included because they all had no idea of the discharged employee's hearing loss. Said an attorney: Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins says that you can't pass a woman over for promotion because she's "not feminine enough" or "acts too much like a man." If you do that, then that's gender discrimination. I'm not sure the analogy translates perfectly to being "not deaf enough." That discharged employee will have to prove his case at trial. .. DeafADA Issue of the Week: The magic number is 15 employees. Companies with less than 15 employees are not subject to the employment provisions of the ADA. If you are deaf and work for an employer that has a small workforce, then ADA regulations may not protect you. Just all depends. This is why we have ADA attorneys, ADA consultants and ADA specialists. .. The Captioning Blunder of the Week: there is a grey maier (matter) in the brain .... What became of? Jack Clevenger - past deaf staff member, Mesa Community College, Arizona - present vocational counselor, West Yavapai Guidance Clinic in Arizona mailto:barry@deafdigest.com with "past" and "present" details .. News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: With Y2K coming up at end of this year, the fear is that TTY relay users will overload the telephone lines, testing their relay systems, thus "blowing out the fuse." .. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Ukrainian interpreter Natalia Dmytruk made the news all over the world for telling her deaf audience that the news she just interpreted was a total lie. Is she to be praised for her efforts to tell the truth? This is what troubles DeafDigest. Professional interpreters are supposed to interpret and not to inject personal political opinions. Even if what she heard is a lie, should she have been neutral while carrying out her interpreting duties? Many years ago a hard of hearing printer, volunteering to interpret at union meetings, was accused of distorting what the speaker spoke at the podium. His distortion was what upset many deaf printers at these meetings. .... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: Confidentiality among our interpreters and our relay operators are a blessing for us, the deaf. Not always that so years ago. A hearing person may volunteer to make telephone calls on behalf of his deaf friend. Unfortunately he makes the deaf business his business, ever so nosey and so anxious to know what resulted in the telephone call he made. .. A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say? the world's best lipreader will catch 90 percent of what is being said. This means that in a 10-word sentence, he will miss one word. That missed word may lead to a huge misunderstanding. A hearing employee asked a deaf employee: have you ever been into the computer system today? The deaf employee thought it was: have you ever been into the computer system before? It was a big difference because the computer system was to be upgraded and all employees were asked to log out. The deaf employee did not log out, and it messed up the upgrading! if you have lipreading tales, please share these with mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- * YOU COULD PLACE YOUR PAID EMPLOYMENT ADS IN THIS SECTION * on a per-subscriber basis, the DeafDigest ad rates are the best in the nation. * For more information, send E-mail to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- (new closing dates) Employment vacancies - School Educator I (closing date 12/18/2009) - Sch Spch-lang Pathologist (closing date 12/16/2009) Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf, Wilson, NC to view these vacancies please visit our website at: http://osp.its.state.nc.us/dhhssearchresults3a.asp?vacancykey=4421 contact person: mailto:cynthia.johnson@ncmail.net -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- 2 open positions The Learning Center for the Deaf and Walden School Framingham, Massachusetts - Residential Supervisor at Framingham Campus The Residential Supervisor assists in supervising residential and social/recreational programming to ensure students gain the knowledge, independent living skills and interpersonal competencies needed to maximize their potential.
