Is there such a thing as bill of rights for deaf? Well,
a group of deaf students from East High School in
Des Moines, Iowa presented state legislators with
a bill of rights.
Being stressed are ASL rights, health insurance
coverage on hearing aids, among others.
Legislators being what they are, this suggestion
will be given a low priority. This is not to say
bill of rights is unimportant, but that legislators are
more worried about other things - such as budget problems.

99.9 percent of the time, Miss Deaf Pageants do not
attract notice of governments. That 0.01 percent did -
the government of Swaziland is looking into the recently
held Miss Deaf Swaziland pageant.
Seems the government was not too pleased by the fact
that the winner was begging for funds to allow her to
take part at the upcoming Miss Deaf World pageant
to take place in Las Vegas.

The unsung heroes behind every legislative session,
both federal and state, are pages. These pages do everything
possible to keep things running - delivering messages,
filling glasses with water, making photocopies, handling
telephone calls, etc. You name it, the pages have done it.
Anyway one of the pages at the Mississippi legislature is
Derek Schmitz. He is deaf and a student at Mississippi
School for the Deaf.

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

An experiment is going on with the deaf of Japan
that watch theatrical performances. They use a portable
device (just like a text pager) which displays captions
of the play they are watching.
   DeafDigest has these concerns:

- cost of such a device; it is said to be expensive
- could one follow the captions in a darkened theater?
- would one's hands get tired of holding up the device for a long time?
- would fixating eyes on the device cause one to miss something on stage?

WRONG SPY
This is a true story. During World War I years, a deaf
person wanted to use the telephone to communicate with
a hearing person.
He tapped on the telephone receiver with a pencil.
The hearing person would listen to the number of taps
to know what he is saying in a coded language.
The federal agents thought the deaf person was a
World War I spy and they arrested him. They realized
it was just a telephone communication between the
deaf and the hearing, and they let him go free.

GARBAGE IS MONEY
Garbage smells awful, but it is money for some deaf schools
and some deaf service agencies.
At some big events (Indianapolis 500, Kentucky Derby,
Talladega 500, etc), deaf groups come to clean up garbage.
Money from the garbage goes to deaf groups.
So, when hearing people complain that garbage smells
bad, it smells sweet for the deaf!

MORE ON LUIS ENRIQUE ERRO WHO WAS HONORED BY A POSTAGE STAMP
Last week's DeafDigest featured a postage stamp in
honor of Luis Enrique Erro, a Mexican astronomer
who was either deaf or late-deafened.
In 1940, after he became deaf, he ran for presidency of
Mexico, but lost. Manuel ?vila Camacho, the winner, offered
him a government position. Erro turned it down but asked
the winner to found an observatory in Astrophysics.
At the age of 40 he had an operation, hoping it would restore
his hearing in his right ear. The operation was not a success.
His deafness was hereditary, in which he told the interviewer
that it was not easy to be deaf, and he had an issue with the
police in Havana. May have something to do with him not following
the orders of the police because of his deafness.

USHER SYNDROME MANY OF US DO NOT KNOW ABOUT
We associate Usher Syndrome with a narrowing range of
vision.
What many of us may not realize is that Usher Syndrome
is the leading cause of combined hearing and vision loss.
Deafness as the cause of Usher Syndrome? DeafDigest editor
had an interesting discussion with Jeanne Glidden Prickett,
superintendent, Iowa School for the Deaf regarding this subject.
Her comments are interesting. For reasons of space, her
comments are being posted on a web page:

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE SAYING EASY TO LEARN SIGNS
A newspaper ran a feature on a local college
sign language program.
   The article said:

Have you ever seen a group of people in public communicating
with sign language and thought, "I wish I knew what they
were saying?" Well, you are in luck. The college offers a
sign language course that can open your eyes to a new
form of communication

That easy to follow ASL in one semester? No way!

OUR ORGANIZATIONS SERVING THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
We have many, many organizations, both national and
local, that serve deaf and hard of hearing people.
   One such organization is:

National Deaf Business Institute

For the organization goals and objectives and its web site, click on:
http://deafdigest.com/ndbi/

AN EXCUSE FOR NOT WEARING A HEARING AID

I couldn't remember where I placed it last night
after I took it off for the night

A GLARING NEWSPAPER CONTRADICTION
Every day newspapers run features on these "success"
CI stories. Of course, newspapers may not run stories
on CI failures, but this is besides the point.
One newspaper, within the same story, said:

Children with cochlear implants have quality of life equal
to normal hearing peers

Yet, in that same story, several lines below, said:

A cochlear implant is an electronic device, which restores
partial hearing to the deaf

Is the newspaper saying that those with partial
hearing will have quality of life equal to normal
hearing peers?
DeafDigest is not, however, saying that deaf people
have quality of life lower than those that can hear.

A CONFESSION OF A LATE DEAFENED PERSON
A late deafened person has this confession.
I wear my hearing aid when people are around
me at home.
But when I am alone at home, I take off my
hearing aid and turn on the volume to full
blast on my TV and on my music!

..............................................................

email mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

for Special Notes, please go to the bottom of this
section

..............................................................
..............................................................

WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?

he is profoundly deaf without the implants

Not every CI person becomes a "hearing" person
with the implants. There are many deaf people
that are still profoundly deaf even with the
implants. Depends on the individual.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The US Senate was introduced a new bill - Rosa's Law, S. 2781,
which prohibits use of phrases "mental retardation" and
"mentally retarded" on federal books, and to replace these
with "intellectual disability". Only one thing wrong with
the bill - it does not include prohibiting of "deaf-dumb"

A. DeafDigest will not decide for you - but
