Well, a group of deaf students from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa presented state legislators with a bill of rights. Being stressed are ASL rights, health insurance coverage on hearing aids, among others. Legislators being what they are, this suggestion will be given a low priority. This is not to say bill of rights is unimportant, but that legislators are more worried about other things - such as budget problems. - Friday February 5th 99.9 percent of the time, Miss Deaf Pageants do not attract notice of governments. That 0.01 percent did - the government of Swaziland is looking into the recently held Miss Deaf Swaziland pageant. Seems the government was not too pleased by the fact that the winner was begging for funds to allow her to take part at the upcoming Miss Deaf World pageant to take place in Las Vegas. - Saturday February 6th The unsung heroes behind every legislative session, both federal and state, are pages. They use a portable device (just like a text pager) which displays captions of the play they are watching. WRONG SPY This is a true story. During World War I years, a deaf person wanted to use the telephone to communicate with a hearing person. He tapped on the telephone receiver with a pencil. The hearing person would listen to the number of taps to know what he is saying in a coded language. The federal agents thought the deaf person was a World War I spy and they arrested him. Camp Isola Bella 2010 Berkshire Mountains, Connecticut High in the Berkshire Mountains, there is a shining lake with a beautiful island in the middle with the name of "Isola Bella" which means beautiful Island in Italian. It's a scenic island estate that has been turned into a recreational/residential summer camp for deaf and hard of hearing children from all over the country. The camp provides a wide variety of educational and recreational activities which are designed first and foremost to be FUN - but it is fun with purpose. The camp's philosophy, "learning through experience," is put into effect in three ways: self-esteem, physical fitness, and knowledge/skills. Campers, ranging in age from 8 years to 17 years old, have expressed many wonderful memories of past camp experiences. GARBAGE IS MONEY Garbage smells awful, but it is money for some deaf schools and some deaf service agencies. At some big events (Indianapolis 500, Kentucky Derby, Talladega 500, etc), deaf groups come to clean up garbage. Money from the garbage goes to deaf groups. In 1940, after he became deaf, he ran for presidency of Mexico, but lost. Manuel ?vila Camacho, the winner, offered him a government position. Erro turned it down but asked the winner to found an observatory in Astrophysics. At the age of 40 he had an operation, hoping it would restore his hearing in his right ear. The operation was not a success. His deafness was hereditary, in which he told the interviewer that it was not easy to be deaf, and he had an issue with the police in Havana. May have something to do with him not following the orders of the police because of his deafness. USHER SYNDROME MANY OF US DO NOT KNOW ABOUT We associate Usher Syndrome with a narrowing range of vision. What many of us may not realize is that Usher Syndrome is the leading cause of combined hearing and vision loss. Deafness as the cause of Usher Syndrome? Of course, newspapers may not run stories on CI failures, but this is besides the point. One newspaper, within the same story, said: Children with cochlear implants have quality of life equal to normal hearing peers Yet, in that same story, several lines below, said: A cochlear implant is an electronic device, which restores partial hearing to the deaf Is the newspaper saying that those with partial hearing will have quality of life equal to normal hearing peers? DeafDigest is not, however, saying that deaf people have quality of life lower than those that can hear. A CONFESSION OF A LATE DEAFENED PERSON A late deafened person has this confession. I wear my hearing aid when people are around me at home. DeafHistory - Looking Back: Year 1887 - the school for the deaf in Minnesota changed its name from Minnesota Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute to Minnesota Institute for Defectives. Luckily, it was later on renamed as Minnesota School for the Deaf and then later as Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf. .. Deaf and the Money: Year 1897 - New Mexico School for the Deaf was closed for four months. Why? The state legislature did not give enough money to keep the school running! .. Qualifications: One year experience as a Resident Advisor; OR two years experience in the human services field working with individuals with developmental disabilities and/or mental health disorders; valid drivers' license; advanced fluency in ASL; demonstrated an ability to supervise, teach, advise and motivate staff members as well as Deaf Consumers; must possess strong interpersonal skills. Duties: Provide guidance and training for staff and support to Deaf consumers with developmental disabilities living in the community; promote consumers' independence and social relationships. - STAFF INTERPRETER: (Full time) Responsibilities include: Interpret for emergencies (physical and psychiatric), mental health evaluations, groups, staff meetings and sessions, home visits with deaf adults and children.
