Hot Deaf News during the week:

- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Clifford C. Leach,
Greece, NY (in the Rochester area), who departed us
at the age of 106. Simply put, he was considered the
Pillar in the Deaf Community.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Larry Fleischer
whose untimely passing hit the Deaf Community real
hard. Larry wore many hats, all at the same time -
Deaf Culture, promoting ASL, Deaf Education, Deaf
Sports, Deaf Films, Deaf Issues consultant, and what
have you. The last time DeafDigest editor chatted
with Larry was at the Deaf Films Festival at
Tampa in 2004. A Californian, he flew to Florida
at the same time, not only just to attend the Film
Festival but to consult with a local law enforcement
agency regarding a deaf inmate that was in prison.
He rented a car, drove all the way from coast
to coast, meaning Florida's east coast to Florida's
west coast, just to attend the Festival. He stayed
at the Festival for few hours before driving back
to the East coast!

- Very Hot News

DeafDigest congratulates Southwest Collegiate Institute
for the Deaf (SWCID) on its 30th anniversary and on
the dedication of its' technical training center.
It seemed only like yesterday that the late Doug
Burke, the SWCID founder, visited the home office
of TDI, Inc, where DeafDigest editor served, at that
time, as the Executive Director. Burke shared his
goals, details, vision and his plans for an all-deaf
vocationally oriented junior college. He had to jump
through many different political hoops before SWCID
became a reality.

The Gallaudet football team clinched a winning season,
with a 6-4 record by defeating SUNY-Maritime 16-13
on a winning touchdown in the last minute of the game.
Not only it made amends for the 27-0 loss last season
to the same team, but it knocked them out of the
league championship game! And with a beautiful
6-4 winning record as compared to last season's
record of 2-8. Over 3,200 fans in New York City watched
this epic battle. While the regular season is over,
Gallaudet is awaiting word to see if they will be
invited to play in the Eastern College Athletic
Conference Division III Bowl Championship game. Have
to hold breaths until November 15th to find out if
the invite has been extended Gallaudet to play in
the November 21st game.

..

- Sunday November 1st

Much furor has raged over the Big 4 Banks continuing
to refuse relay calls that there is talk of legal
action. These Big 4 Banks are Bank of America,
JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo. Let us
throw two more banks into the mix - CapitolOne Bank
and Wachovia.

- Monday November 2nd

Much anger by the national Deaf-Blind community have
been directed at Abigail Breslin, only 13 years old
and neither deaf nor blind for her casting of the
Helen Keller role in the upcoming Broadway production
of "The Miracle Worker."

- Tuesday November 3rd

A serious issue has surfaced with deaf children attending
47 School for the Deaf in New York. They cannot ride on
school buses because the City Board of Education requires
Individualized Education Plans for these children. The
irate parents have been bombarding the City Board of
Education with their complaints.

- Wednesday November 4th

Evan Smith, not deaf, has involved Oregon School for
the Deaf in his unusual athletic forays. He plays
for the deaf school football team in the fall,
plays for a different hearing school in basketball, and
a third hearing school for track and field!

(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)

..

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Regarding the Fort Hood tragedy, we have read about the
civilian police officer Kimberly Munley who shot the killer
to stop the carnage. What about it? She was an interpreter
for the deaf years ago in North Carolina before she moved
to Texas to become a police officer.

NEVER HEARD OF GALLAUDET OR NTID!

hearing colleges in Rochester, NY, but never heard

NO HEARING AID ON AN AIRPLANE TRIP
A deaf man, in South Africa, went on an airplane.
He was told by the airplane captain that he must
take off his hearing aid. If he refused, he would
be arrested.
The airplane captain thought the hearing aid
was an illegal electronic device used for
spying.
The deaf man had to explain that he is deaf and
needed a hearing aid to help him hear better. The
captain then gave permission!
   Very scary!

FARIBAULT'S DEAF HOTEL
Last week's DeafDigest mentioned GrandStay Residential
Suites, a hotel in Faribault, Minnesota, the town where
the school for the deaf is located.
That hotel claimed to be the first in the nation
to have every room installed with flashing strobe
lights.
Said a staff member at the school:

We've had deaf groups use the hotel, and everyone
loved this facility

A NEWSPAPER BLOOPER
DeafDigest editor could not believe his eyes
when he read a newspaper story, off a web site.
   The story said:

he was born profoundly deaf in both eyes

A DEAF MAN IN CUSTOMER SERVICE
Dan Syrcher, Buffalo, NY, is deaf and works in
Customer Service at the Buffalo International Airport.
From time to time foreign passengers, who cannot
speak English, come to him with "that look" on
their faces, needing help.
   Dan explained:

The first thing I do is "sign" to them as if I'm opening
my ticket jacket that contains the boarding pass and tickets
and other paperwork and that I want to read it. Most everyone
understand that pretty quick and they hand over the paperwork
which then I read to give me a clue of what they are in need
of. I'm pretty successful at it. If it ends up that I can't
help them, I'll take them to the specific airline that they
come in on or going out on and let the airline take care of
it from there.

WHAT DID NETFLIX SAY?
We are all complaining that Netflix is caption-unfriendly?
A DeafDigest subscriber wrote a letter to Netflix.
Netflix responded and their comment was:

The technologies we use for streaming do not yet adequately
support closed captions. We are working on delivering
closed captions or optional subtitles in a future technology
update, which we hope to deliver to Silverlight clients
sometime in 2010.

He has switched to Hulu and is happy with it.

DEAF ISSUES

that require school districts to hire counselors

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being challenged by the coordinator of the event,
which booked the services of the interpreter:

why are you here?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

In addition to competing in the National Court Reporters
Association' annual speed contest at speeds up to 280
words per minute, court reporters, CART providers, and
captioners have competed at even higher speeds.

In 2004, Mark Kislingbury, a court reporter and broadcast
captioner from Houston, Texas, set a Guinness World Record
when he successfully transcribed dictation at 360 words per
minute with over 97% accuracy.

Over the years, Mark studied how many strokes per second
he was able to achieve. He found that by trying to shorten
how many strokes he wrote per word and by writing more
strokes per second, he was able to write faster than anyone
else.

When he set the world record at 360 words per minute, he did
it by averaging .8 strokes per word and 4.8 strokes per second

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Terry Waters, a resident of Staunton, Virginia,
was one of the best wrestling coaches in the
state, leading his Fort Defiance HS teams to 13
state championship matches. For his efforts, he
was fired - and he filed a lawsuit this week, on
basis of racial discrimination, as he is
African-American.

What about it?

He is deaf.

The Deaf and the Law

In Mexico, the notary public officers may give exceptions

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

While we've had ADA since the nineties, it constantly
evolves.

Under the old ADA, the employee's medical condition is
being pointed out; if the employee is deaf, it is
pointed out

Under the new ADA, the employer accommodates the employee's
disability in a minimally acceptable way

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

An issue was raised at one state-level TTY relay service
board meeting - that the Video Relay Service, already
wildly popular in the deaf community, is bypassing the
senior citizens.
   Why?

Because these deafened senior citizens do not know
sign language.
According to one activist, the ADA regulations need
to be adhered to as far as communication accommodations
are concerned - and what if a non-signing deafened
senior citizen wants a VRS?

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

The NIMBY attitude can be real ugly.
NIMBY stands for Not In My Backyard, and it
