A hot protest erupted over Gallaudet University's
hosting of "Corpus Christi", a controversial play because of the mixture of religion and gender orientation themes.

DeafDigest is disappointed with the protest.
Gallaudet has always been the bastion of
diversity, which is a microcosm of the
American society. Tolerance has been the
rule on the Gallaudet campus, and this
includes the play.

Said Gallaudet provost Stephen Weiner:

Gallaudet University neither endorses nor condemns the views expressed in Corpus Christi, or any dramatic production. We understand that there are people who will find this play affirming, liberating, and cathartic, and
others who find its message disrespectful, distasteful, and repugnant. We seek to allow all views to be aired openly and respectfully, and we hope that open discussions will allow individuals to listen to one another. This
is the hallmark of an academic institution. "Gallaudet spokeswoman Mercy Coogan told me that Hurwitz, who is deaf, is accepting e-mails but routing calls to his chief of staff, Don Beil, who is hearing

Deaf rock star Sean Forbes, himself a NTID graduate,
was praised in Detroit's business newspaper for
basing his Deaf Professional Arts Network headquarters
in the city, helping the city economy a bit.

- Monday April 5th

Is Whitley joking? Singer Whitley, not deaf, whose real name is Lawrence Greenwood, said that he is going on a "retirement
tour."

His plans after retirement? He said:

I wanna learn sign language and be an interpreter for the deaf

Is he joking?

His fans think he is joking

- Tuesday April 6th

The Texas Deaf Community is upset over the
death of a deaf patient at a hospital in
Cypress, Texas. The deaf patient requested
an interpreter and was turned down. He made
repeated efforts to get an interpreter and
was rebuffed each time. Then one last time
he went home, hoping to get an interpreter
the next day. This was not to be for he
passed away that night while asleep.

- Wednesday April 7th

Marcia Reinthaler, not deaf, won the election
for a seat on the Sheboygan School Board
(Wisconsin).

Why is DeafDigest curious about it? The
newspaper said:

She and her husband are active in the Association for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children in Sheboygan County

DeafDigest does not know what her views are
regarding education of the deaf - oral, ASL, Cued
Speech or whatever !

A HEARING PERSON'S CONFESSION
A hearing person had a confession. When he sees
deaf people using sign language to communicate with
each other, he always stares at them.
Rude ? Yes, but the hearing person said sign language
is so beautiful that he loves to watch even though he
does not understand a word.
It is the same as a deaf person watching a band, led
by a band leader who uses his hands to guide the
musicians. A deaf person may not understand music but
enjoys watching the movement of the hands.

A HOME-MADE HEARING AID

Hearing aids are expensive; many low income people cannot
afford to make the hearing aid purchase.
One low income person made his own hearing aid. It was
simple but odd looking. Ear plugs were attached to a portable
microphone. This device would be placed to the person that
is speaking.
It worked for that late-deafened person.

A web site posted a suggestion. It was to point the
forefinger and make a Z sign in the air.
It claims that pizza places understand this sign
easily?
This is interesting. Even among the speech-challenged,

CRUISE INTERPRETING
Many deaf people love to travel, especially on cruises,
and even more so, on all-deaf cruises.
A sore issue is always interpreting, or the lack of
it on these cruise trips.
One cruise operator recently outlined his requirements
for interpreters interested in touring with the deaf.
It goes as follows:

- own a passport
- payment is not in money but in a travel voucher
- must be able to interpret anywhere on the cruise
- must be flexible enough to meet all interpreting conditions

It will be a challenge interpreting at a cruise ship that
practically resembles a huge shopping mall!

CONFESSIONS OF A DEAF STUDENT IN LAW SCHOOL

I've had fellow law students come to me and complain
that my interpreter's signs distract them. I would
then tell them that their ignorance of issues facing
the deaf is equally distracting

FALLING IN LOVE AGAINST ALL ODDS
Do we, the deaf, fall in love with our special ones
against all odds?
Against all odds? Of course not. People, both deaf
and hearing, fall in love, and of course, fall out of
love.
Well, Arguelles (full name not known) directed a Filipino
movie titled "Paano" which focuses on a deaf couple falling in love with each other - against all odds.
It is as if Arguelles implies that we, the deaf, cannot
fall in love because of our hearing impairment!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Because realtime captioners and CART providers do not use the QWERTY
keyboard, the types of errors that they make are different than
someone who is typing on a computer keyboard. Some people may think
that captioners don't know the difference between simple words. If
a captioner strokes the steno for "rain" instead of "rein," it is
not because the captioner does not know the difference between those
two words. It may just be that the captioner stroked the wrong
stroke on the steno keyboard.

Homophones are difficult for many captioners because they are words
that sound the same but are spelled differently. Captioners are
trained to write phonetically, so when two words sound the same, the
captioner has to devise a system to distinguish between the two
words. One of the solutions is to add an asterisk to the steno so
that the strokes will be different. But now the captioner has to
remember which stroke gets the asterisk: Do I add the asterisk to
"guild" or "gild"?

If you ever see a sentence captioned something like, "The Army
kernel went to visit the sergeant," remember that the words
"colonel" and "kernel" sound the same, and the captioner is

BJC Behavioral Health (BJC BH) is an affiliated member of BJC HealthCare
offering comprehensive community-based behavioral health services to
children and adults in the St. Louis metropolitan area and in the
Missouri counties of Washington, Iron and St. Francois.

The services offered help people with a range of behavioral health needs. A primary strategy of BJC BH is extension of services into the
community, building capacity. Services are offered at home, school,
workplace and other community settings.

The therapist will be able to work with individuals, families, and
groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and
promote optimal mental health with Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults
and children. The therapist must have knowledge of therapeutic best
practices for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals and be able to
apply cultural and linguistic bridging to promote optimal mental
health. They should be fluent in sign language and culturally
competent in American Sign Language therefore has the ability to
communicate directly with deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Therapists are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to
address a wide range of issues including depression, addiction, and
substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress management, problems with
self esteem issues associated with aging, job and career concerns,
educational decisions, adjustment issues, parenting, grief marital or
relationship problems, as well as others. Therapist need to be able
be flexibly to work within various structures in the community mental
health system.

There are 2 openings, 1 for Children and 1 for adults.

Job duties will include, therapy, intakes, clinical case management,
triage/crisis intervention and EAP therapy.

Must have a Masters or Doctorate in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology

The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), a college of

NTID provides deaf and hard-of-hearing students with state-of-the-art

200 faculty members, 380 staff, and close to 6,000 alumni. FY 2009
operational revenues totaled approximately $85 million, of which $63
