WITHOUT AN INTERPRETER AT A HOSPITAL? Hospitals are always busy. Never a quiet moment at hospitals. If a deaf person, without an interpreter, enters a hospital, complaining of an ear ache, would he be sent to the audiology department for a hearing test? Very important to have an interpreter at any time in the hospital. - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/interpreterhospital/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) JOBS IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT FIELD There are always deaf sports-loving individuals dreaming of jobs in the sports world - general manager, director of player development, quality control coach, media director, etc. Very few jobs are held by deaf individuals. Years ago an individual with a serious hearing loss was the director of scouting for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ben Wade, a former major league pitcher, was able to stay in baseball by cultivating his contacts with baseball people - and moved up the ranks to the position he held until he retired. Wade's hearing loss? He did not wear a hearing aid for reasons of his own, and he stayed away from social situations where he would be exposed. And he was able to steer conversations away from him by deflecting these on others and walking away! Because he was popular, everyone accepted his social (deafness) shortcomings. A DEAF MAN OF TWO POLES According to Michiko Tsuchiya, a deaf Japanese writer, Yasuyuki Okubo is something special. CAN OR CAN'T, GOOD NEWS OR BAD NEWS A deaf professional in the mental health field said he is able to establish a clinic devoted to the needs of the deaf at a local hospital. This is the good news. The bad news is that he must secure funding on his own as the hospital would not give him a cent. This is the reason why we are sorely lacking in mental health facilities for the deaf in many metropolitan areas. A SMART DEAF ASSOCIATION? In South Africa, there is an association of the deaf that is called Wits Deaf Association. A rather unusual name if it was in USA, but in South Africa, Wits is a a well known name. In one looks up the word "wits" in a dictionary it would mean something like "being smart." A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK Q. Is there a budget in the government, either federal or state, that provides for the video relay services? A. No. All telephone companies must make their services accessible to the disabled, the deaf included. "Pennies" from our monthly phone bills are for such services. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? A hearing person telling the interpreter, standing next to a deaf person: let me explain it to you and you can explain it to him on your own time if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series As viewers of closed captioning, we are very concerned that TV shows, movies, and online videos are captioned for accessibility. Different companies have been in the news lately because of their efforts in providing captioning on the Internet or failing to provide captioning on their DVDs. What we need to remember is that it is not the just the quantity of captioning that is important, but it is very important that the quality of captioning be maintained. Captioning must be accurate in order to provide meaningful accessibility. If an organization says that they caption their videos, yet the accuracy rate is only 60-70%, that is not good enough to be considered accessible. We must educate ourselves on what is considered good captioning, and we must not accept captioning that does not truly provide access. It is up to all of us, as viewers of captioning, to provide feedback to the companies so that they know where their captioning efforts are succeeding and where they are failing. Inaccurate captions are not providing equal access. ................................................................ ................................................................ weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com updated every Monday ................................................................ ................................................................ Hot DeafNews boring, but important! The net is cluttered with many, many deaf-related and hard of hearing-related web sites. One of them is HearingExchange, geared primarily towards the hard of hearing. It is shutting down. The owner wished to go into a different direction, hence the shutdown .. The Deaf and the Law A certain employment agency contacted DeafDigest about placing an employment ad. They said their client was ever so desperate to hire a deaf person right now this moment! Why? They would not specifically say why - but hinted it was to comply with anti-discrimination laws! .. DeafADA Issue of the Week: Deaf individuals, seeking advice on social security issues, will be disappointed to find out that this agency is not subject to ADA regulations as far as interpreters are concerned. Reason is that federal agencies are not subject to ADA regulations. If you need an interpreter for a SSA appointment, do check around and maybe there are social security advisors that know sign language. There are two of them in the Washington, DC area. .. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: What is not surprising is the news that Fairview-University Medical Center, located in Minneapolis, lost their case over their refusal to provide interpreters for a deaf patient. What is surprising is that this is happening in the Twin Cities area. Minnesota has a strong reputation for a wide range of services for the deaf and for its strong Deaf Community. Guess some hospitals just don't get the drift, and in the case of Fairview-University, they're paying the price for flouting the ADA. ....
