ASL in Dubai? ASL as in American Sign Language, yes,
if a Dubai language and teacher training institute has
its way. The institute is planning a series of sign
language classes to help the deaf and the hearing
communicate with each other - and ASL was chosen as
the language option.

FAST NEWS IN OLD DAYS
We have email, videos, blogs, vlogs, AIM, pagers, etc.
All of these help us get news very quickly. An example
was when Ben Soukup introduced Alan Hurwitz as the
new Gallaudet president. Everyone knew about it within
few seconds.
What about the old days of TTY machines. Were the
news slow? Well, one news-hungry CEO of a deaf agency
used his TTY for about 2-3 hours a day just to get deaf
news from anywhere in USA?
   Yes, telephone bills were high.

WITHOUT AN INTERPRETER AT A HOSPITAL?
Hospitals are always busy. Never a quiet moment at
hospitals.
If a deaf person, without an interpreter, enters
a hospital, complaining of an ear ache, would he be
sent to the audiology department for a hearing test?
Very important to have an interpreter at any
time in the hospital.

JOBS IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT FIELD
There are always deaf sports-loving individuals
dreaming of jobs in the sports world - general
manager, director of player development, quality
control coach, media director, etc.
Very few jobs are held by deaf individuals.
Years ago an individual with a serious hearing
loss was the director of scouting for the Los
Angeles Dodgers.
Ben Wade, a former major league pitcher, was
able to stay in baseball by cultivating his
contacts with baseball people - and moved up
the ranks to the position he held until he
retired.
Wade's hearing loss? He did not wear a hearing
aid for reasons of his own, and he stayed away
from social situations where he would be exposed.
And he was able to steer conversations away from
him by deflecting these on others and walking away!
Because he was popular, everyone accepted his
social (deafness) shortcomings.

A DEAF MAN OF TWO POLES
According to Michiko Tsuchiya, a deaf Japanese
writer, Yasuyuki Okubo is something special.
He is the only deaf person in the world to travel
to both poles, the North Pole and the South Pole.

CAN OR CAN'T, GOOD NEWS OR BAD NEWS
A deaf professional in the mental health field
said he is able to establish a clinic devoted to the
needs of the deaf at a local hospital. This is the
good news.
The bad news is that he must secure funding on his
own as the hospital would not give him a cent.
This is the reason why we are sorely lacking in
mental health facilities for the deaf in many
metropolitan areas.

A SMART DEAF ASSOCIATION?
In South Africa, there is an association of the
deaf that is called Wits Deaf Association.
A rather unusual name if it was in USA, but
in South Africa, Wits is a a well known name.
In one looks up the word "wits" in a dictionary
it would mean something like "being smart."

A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK

Q. Is there a budget in the government, either federal
or state, that provides for the video relay services?

A. No. All telephone companies must make their services
accessible to the disabled, the deaf included. "Pennies"
from our monthly phone bills are for such services.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

A hearing person telling the interpreter, standing next
to a deaf person:

let me explain it to you and you can explain it to him
on your own time

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

As viewers of closed captioning, we are very concerned that TV
shows, movies, and online videos are captioned for accessibility.

Different companies have been in the news lately because of their
efforts in providing captioning on the Internet or failing to provide
captioning on their DVDs.

What we need to remember is that it is not the just the quantity of
captioning that is important, but it is very important that the quality
of captioning be maintained.

Captioning must be accurate in order to provide meaningful
accessibility. If an organization says that they caption their
videos, yet the accuracy rate is only 60-70%, that is not good enough
to be considered accessible.

We must educate ourselves on what is considered good captioning, and we
must not accept captioning that does not truly provide access. It is up
to all of us, as viewers of captioning, to provide feedback to the
companies so that they know where their captioning efforts are succeeding
and where they are failing.

Inaccurate captions are not providing equal access.

A DEAF SCIENTIST FUNCTIONING IN ALL-HEARING ENVIRONMENT

If I do not understand a hearing person, the chances are
great that other staff members also do not understand
that same person! And that frustrated hearing person
would somehow, via gestures or note writing, endeavor
to make himself understood

HEALTH AND ADVOCACY INFORMATION
FOR PERSON WHO ARE DEAF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING:

Persons who are Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing are
grossly underserved by both the physical health and the
behavioral health care system. In many cases, the patient
as well as the health care provider who may provide service
to them, is unaware of laws that mandate the provision of
accommodations in the health care setting so that all
persons have equal access to health related information.

A new web site called http://www.healthbridges.info
was created by people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and hard
of hearing.

Each month the topics discussed will change.

Please visit the site and let us know about topics that you

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The net is cluttered with many, many
deaf-related and hard of hearing-related
web sites.
One of them is HearingExchange, geared
primarily towards the hard of hearing. It
is shutting down. The owner wished to go into
a different direction, hence the shutdown

..

The Deaf and the Law

   A certain employment agency contacted
DeafDigest about placing an employment ad. They
said their client was ever so desperate to
hire a deaf person right now this moment!
Why? They would not specifically say
why - but hinted it was to comply with
anti-discrimination laws!

..

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

Deaf individuals, seeking advice on social
security issues, will be disappointed to find out
that this agency is not subject to ADA regulations
as far as interpreters are concerned.

Reason is that federal agencies are not subject
to ADA regulations.

If you need an interpreter for a SSA appointment, do
check around and maybe there are social security
advisors that know sign language. There are two
of them in the Washington, DC area.

..

The Captioning Blunder of the Week:

This archaeologist visited No ma'am (North Yemen)
and Yes ma'am (South Yemen)

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The much respected Ralph Jordan passed away
recently.
Ralph founded the Deaf Counseling and Advocacy
Referral Agency, a leading deaf social service agency
in the California Bay Area and also in Northern
California.

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

What is not surprising is the news that Fairview-University
Medical Center, located in Minneapolis, lost their case over
their refusal to provide interpreters for a deaf patient.
What is surprising is that this is happening in the
Twin Cities area. Minnesota has a strong reputation for
a wide range of services for the deaf and for its
strong Deaf Community.
Guess some hospitals just don't get the drift, and
in the case of Fairview-University, they're paying
the price for flouting the ADA.

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

For years, the deaf have fought the government in
Japan to be allowed to drive. And when the government,
after so many years of prodding, finally relented
last year, then what are the results?

Just 45 registered deaf drivers!

C'mon, what is going on?

..

A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news:

You receive a bonus not only for being able to speak ASL but
Spanish and English as well.

..

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A beggar comes to you. You avoid him, thinking he's
asking you for money, so you walk away. You then notice
that a person, walking behind you, was responding to
the beggar's request for directions!

Assumption, without a lipreading effort, could always
be wrong.

if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
