Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. is one of the leading plaintiffs' litigation
law firms in America. The firm has played leading roles in national
and local litigations involving defective medicines and medical
devices. Our law firm is expanding its litigation against Advanced
Bionics related to defective cochlear implants implanted in young
children and adults.

Some of the firm's clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced with a
second defective implant that later failed.

If you or your child has been implanted with a defective cochlear

- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Lucille Allen McAlister,
Houston, Texas, who departed us.

A Coda, she was one of the movers and shakers in the Texas
interpreting field, and pushed for certification of these
interpreters.

DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Herbert Morris Fradin,
who departed us. In 1977, he was one of the co-founders of the
Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf, an organization that still exists to
this day,

A world traveler, he has traveled to 50 nations, plus all 50
states in USA. He was also noted for his collection of art
and pieces of China.

- Hot Newspaper stories during the week:

A worrisome deaf-blind population explosion in Wales
http://deafdigest.com/madeleinebrindley/

Fluency in Plains (Native American) Sign Language, a rarity
http://deafdigest.com/donnahealy/

- Very Hot News

If a hearing shoplifter is violently tackled on the ground.
it is not front page news.

But if a deaf shoplifter is violently tackled on the ground,
it becomes international news within few minutes, thanks
to the internet and the video camera. This happened to a
deaf man, accused of shoplifting. He exited a store
in Los Angeles, unaware that the alarm went off and was
violently tackled by the security guard.

This episode has become a hot issue in the Deaf Community,
only because the security people did not know that the
captured person was deaf.

Did he shoplift or not? Computers that trigger the
store alarm may be malfunctioning! Or maybe not.

- Sunday August 8th

People in North Carolina are not happy about the change in oversight
of two state residential schools for the deaf. It was transferred
from Department of Health and Human Services to the Department
of Public Instruction. They want the oversight to go back to
what it was. They are saying the state lacks resources and
experience to operate these two schools.

- Monday August 9th

Alhaji Tanko Makura, who is deaf, is campaigning for the governor's
seat in Nasarawa, Nigeria. He is affiliated with the People's
Democratic Party

- Tuesday August 10th

are we seeing an irony with the settlement agreement
between the Justice Department and the Mount Vernon Ladies
Association of the Union? This group operates the estate of
George Washington, our first President.

The irony? George Washington was already late-deafened when
he became our first president. He became deaf due to noise
overexposure on the battlefield against the British!
He had problems following these political speeches.

At any rate, the agreement was to make the estate accessible
to the disabled, the deaf included - and that means
interpreters and captions.

- Wednesday August 11th

past Alaska Senator Ted Stevens perished in air crash

it was learned that all deaf athletes need to thank
Ted Stevens.

He was the one that pushed for the Amateur Sports Act
in 1978.

It forced the US Olympic Commission to recognize our
participation in the Deaflympics and in world
championships in a variety of sports.

While the Amateur Sports Act in 1978 is not
perfect and needs to be improved on, we, the deaf,
had nothing in the past, and were pretty much
ignored by the public.

HARD TO FIGURE OUT DEAF FAMILY TREE
There are many deaf parents that have deaf children.
And these deaf children marry deaf spouses, and again,
have deaf children, and so on.
And 15-20 years later, when a deaf member sits down
and tries to figure out his family tree, he may have
a hard time.
DeafDigest editor has spoken with several deaf
individuals, those from big deaf family backgrounds.
They often do not remember who married which and who
married whom and so on.

A DEAF ORGANIZATION IN DALLAS
There is a DEAF organization in Dallas, Texas, but
all members are hearing (unless DeafDigest editor is
wrong).
DEAF stands for Dallas Electric Aircraft Fliers,
which is an organization of model aircraft
hobbyists.
And speaking of deaf model aircraft hobbyists,
DeafDigest knows of several deaf individuals with
this hobby.

A DEAF MEMBER OF A FRATERNITY IN IVY LEAGUE
We have a number of deaf graduates of these
prestigious Ivy League colleges. Some of them
belonged to fraternities and sororities.
   Have their affiliations benefitted their
job careers?
Said one deaf Ivy League frat member:

I personally was not that involved in the house.
I showed up for parties, hung out there weekend
evenings for beer pong, watching evening football
games, frat formals, BBQs, some intramurals. But
that's about it. And my best friends tended to be
outside the house. I don't keep in touch with any
of my frat brothers, although its good to see them
when I run into them at football games and alumni
events. I'm sure it looked ok on my resume. I said
that I was deaf on my resume. If anyone from my
college was reading my resume, and saw the Frat
affiliation, I'm sure they'd probably think
"well, his deafness didn't seem to be much of a
problem for him socially. But that's probably
the best extent to which it "helped" my career.

SCARY WHEN SECURITY PEOPLE COME AT YOU
We have read about the ugly incident in Los Angeles
when store security people tackled an alleged deaf
shoplifter.
As a way of procedure, many security officers
(patrol officers and private security guards)
react first and ask questions later.
DeafDigest editor remembers an incident way
back in the seventies. A deaf motorcyclist was
stopped by the police on some minor traffic
violation.
The deaf cyclist, himself a peace-loving person,
reached out for his pen and pad in his pocket. The
police officer, panicking, jumped and roughed him up
and put him in handcuffs. It was only after the
handcuffs were put on the wrists when the police
officer realized the cyclist was deaf!
Yes, these officers are trained on how to deal
with the deaf. Unfortunately for many of them,
they forget what they were trained when they
encounter the deaf.

MAKING STORES AND SHOPS DEAF ACCESSIBLE
Many stores and shops are not deaf-accessible.
And it has nothing to do with having a TTY (rather
old fashioned, ain't it) or a fax machine on the
premises.
Rather it has a lot to do with:

- signs displayed on floor sign holders.
Can be rather annoying when you go into a Subways outlet
and having to point to a distant sign on the wall indicating
the sub you want.

- clerks trained to acknowledge patron's deafness.
there have been instances of clerks freezing up and panicking
in the presence of deaf patrons

- pen and pad quickly available.
how many times have we seen clerks running around, rummaging
around for a pen and a pad upon request by a deaf patron?
Not every deaf patron is always carrying own pen and own
pad!

DURING THE EARLY YEARS OF SOCIOLOGY AS A FIELD
Sociology, as a field, was developed throughout
the 19th century.
One of these pioneers in this field was
Harriet Martineau. She has been noted for being the
first female sociologist.
What about it? She became deaf as a young woman,
and to communicate she had to use the ear trumpet!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being told:

I watched you more than I watched the speaker even though
I don't understand sign language

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Today, captioning is not only for people who are deaf or
hard-of-hearing. More and more people are becoming aware of the
benefits of captioning and its many uses.

The primary purpose of captioning is to provide equal access for
people with a hearing loss, but many hearing people are using it in
different ways. Most of us have probably seen captioning on the
television screens in health and fitness clubs, hospitals, airports,
and bars and lounges.

Captioning can also be used to help people who are learning English
as a second language and children who are learning to read. It can
increase the literacy skills of deaf and hard-of-hearing students and
hearing students alike.

Even people who read very well can use captioning to help them hear,
understand, and remember the details of a television show, movie,
convention, or seminar. Studies have been done that show that people
remember more of what they see.

All of us should work together to get the very best captioning
possible because it is helping all of us to become better at what we
do.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The NTID stands proud of its list of graduates of RIT engineering

There is one deaf engineer who is considered an engineer's engineer.
Paul Stropko is a rarity among deaf engineers - a specialist in
microelectronical engineering. Working for IBM he tells engineers
what is wrong with their microelectronic projects.
Said a friend "there's not too many engineers doing semiconductor
chip work, just a lot of technicians."

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

DeafDigest editor dedicates this edition to George
Gompers, who departed us recently in Florida.
George, who was deaf, was the nephew of legendary
labor leader Samuel Gompers.
George, a Philadelphia resident for many years,
helped found the Philadelphia Mayors Office on the
Handicapped. He saw that the office fund several yearly
recreation activities for senior deaf citizens.
Growing up, Uncle Samuel would take deaf nephew
George to Washington, DC to watch Gallaudet football games.
Remember George was pretty much active in the days
when Deaf Seniors of America did not exist.
Thank you, George for your pre-DSA activities.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

- A newspaper ran this story as follows:

Deaf baby hears mom's voice for the first time

It was about a deaf baby being implanted
with a CI.

- We will never see this story as follows:

Deaf baby hears mom's voice for the first time

It would be about a deaf baby being outfitted
with a hearing aid.
