- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Marcia B. Dugan, who
departed us. After becoming deaf late in life, she
involved herself with a range of deaf and hard of hearing
related activities, and also worked at NTID.

Said Gallaudet president Alan Hurwitz:

"Marcia was the 'rock' in the hard of hearing community.
She was an outstanding leader different organizations at
all levels --- local, state-wide, national and, even,
international --- having served as a  President, an officer
and an active member of these hard of hearing organizations.
She was a key person in building coalition of organizations
serving individuals with disabilities.  She was an
outstanding member of the RIT/NTID community and played a
crucial role in public relations as Director of Marketing and
Communications.  She authored several books about her life
experiences, accessibility needs of hard of hearing people,
and the hard of hearing community.  She will be sorely missed
by all of us."

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Harley Helms, a deaf
shoemaker, who departed us. His shoe repair shop was a
landmark in Blacksburg, VA where Virginia Tech is
located. A link to an interesting newspaper story
is found just below.

- Very Hot News

A while back controversy swirled over Netflix's captioning
issues. Netflix is now saying that their future HD streaming
videos will be captioned. Do we trust or believe Netflix?

There are tales going on that Gregor Schlierenzauer, the
Austrian ski-jumper is deaf and participating in the
Winter Olympics. Yes, he is deaf but in ONE ear. We,
however, have a deaf participant in Meghan Agosta,
who plays on Canada's women hockey team. She took leave
from Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania to participate
in the Winter Olympics.

- Sunday February 7th

The Saints won; the Colts lost; now we shall focus on the
hottest issue in the Deaf Community - the captioning or
the lack of it with the Super Bowl commercials.

Before we move on, it was learned that Flo TV and MobiTV
did not do any captioning of the commercials for "reasons"
of their own.

Now what about the commercials?

The hottest commercials were:

ANHEUSER-BUSCH - captioned
BOOST MOBILE - captioned
COCA-COLA - captioned
DENNY'S - captioned
DOCKERS - captioned
KIA - not captioned
HOMEAWAY.COM - captioned
SNICKERS - captioned
VOLKSWAGEN - captioned
TACO BELL - captioned

Only Kia wasn't captioned.

As usual, the pre-game ASL signer was "hidden"
somewhere on the screen.

What does DeafDigest have to feel about the whole
thing? Mixed feelings. Lets' just move on to the
2011 Super Bowl.

- Monday February 8th

the state of Connecticut has proposed merging its
Commission on the Deaf and Hearing Impaired with the
Department of Social Services. The deaf community is
not too happy about it.

- Tuesday February 9th

Paul Kagame, president of Rwanda, personally donated 12
hand knitting machines to the Butare School of the Deaf.
These machines would be part of the vocational program
that the school offers to its deaf students. This was
a follow up of the pledge the president made way
back in year 2003. Why has it taken the president
SEVEN years is something DeafDigest does not understand!

- Wednesday February 10th

What would become of South Dakota School for the Deaf
main campus which only has five students? If the
state Board of Regents has its way, these remaining
students would be shipped off to other schools,
and the portions of the campus to house hearing
high school and hearing college classes. As
always, stay tuned.

A SURPRISE RESEARCH
Many people thought young hearing people become
deaf fast because of loud noise, loud music, etc.
University of Wisconsin research group compared
group of young hearing people and older hearing
people. The research group was surprised to find
that older hearing people lose hearing faster
than younger hearing people.
They think loud noise and loud music will not
cause young hearing people to become deaf.
This is a big surprise to us.

FIVE MOVIE OSCAR WINNERS
Every year the best actors and actresses win
Oscars for their best acting roles in movies.
We all know about Marlee Matlin, our famous
deaf actress who won an Oscar while she was
a young woman.
She is the only disabled (deaf) actress
to win an Oscar for playing a disabled
(deaf) role in a movie.
The other four Oscar winners played
disabled roles in their movies. They were
not disabled but played disabled roles.
Discrimination against disabled and
deaf actors and actresses in Hollywood?
Of course!

ONE SIDE OR DIFFERENT SIDES OF DEAFNESS?
The National Deaf Children's Society will be hosting a weekend
in Edinburgh, Scotland. Invited are parents of newly born deaf.
The goal is to educate these parents about the deaf and of
deafness.
This is great OR this is bad? Would the organization explain
to these parents these different sides - sign language, oralism,
CI, hearing aids, Cued Speech, residential schools, mainstreamed
programs, etc. Or would the parents be exposed only to one
side - like oralism, but shutting them out on information on other
sides of deafness?
DeafDigest knows of one parent, in a midwestern state, who
became her own resource center on deafness, inviting parents to
consult with her regarding their deaf children.
The parent would not explain to them what other sides were
all about - just told these parents what oralism was all about.
The parent paid the ultimate price. Her deaf daughter "discovered"
sign language in her twenties, and has since then involved
herself with the sign language community. Her deaf son, sheltered
all his life, has suffered issues that requires lifetime
counseling.

A FAMOUS PERSON INTO SELF-DENIAL
Tamika Catchings is a famous women's basketball
player, probably one of the world's top three women
basketball players.
She grew up denying her hearing loss and avoiding
any use of the hearing aids. It was not until when she
got older that she came to terms with her deafness.
Yet, she recently made this comment:

I am not deaf, but I wear hearing aids and along with the
hearing problem, most people have a speech problem

The question is - if she is not deaf, then why is she
wearing hearing aids? People who wear hearing aids may
either be mildly deaf or moderately deaf or severely deaf
or profoundly deaf.
It is very likely that Tamika is either mildly deaf or
moderately deaf, thus necessitating use of her hearing aids.
To wear a hearing and and to deny one's own deafness?
An interesting case of contradiction !

REFUSING THESE POWER PLANT CONSTRUCTION JOBS
Some years back, there were three power plants
under construction in the state of Maryland. A deaf
engineer was involved and he had contacts with the
construction foremen. They wanted to hire the deaf
for these construction jobs.
The deaf engineer made contacts in the deaf communities
in the metropolitan areas of Washington, DC and
Baltimore - inviting the deaf to sign up for these
construction jobs.
Result? Not just one deaf person signed up. Said
the engineer:

They would have made one hundred thousand a year easily

Why wouldn't the deaf want to sign up for these jobs?
Good question!

A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK

Q. Why does the FCC have the need to certify our relay
providers?

A. to make sure providers adhere to FCC regulations,
as well as to implement E911 emergency procedures
and to ensure that 10-digit numbers will work with
all providers, asides from the users' preferred provider

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

One of the major problems that closed-captioning advocates still
face is lack of public awareness about closed captioning.

Most people have seen closed captioning on TVs at a gym, a bar,
or an airport, but there is still a lack of knowledge about how
it is done.

I have heard people say, "Just turn on the captioning," when a
video is being played that has not been captioned.  They just
can't quite understand that until someone puts the captions on
that tape or DVD, there are NO captions to turn on.

Captions do not magically appear. Someone must be responsible
for encoding the captions on the video.

I have also heard people say, "Oh, this is just a VHS tape, so there
must not be captioning," or "This DVD must have captioning."

Both VHS tapes and DVDs may or may not have captioning.  The
producers of videos must take the time and go through the expense
of arranging for captioning of each video, or there will be no
captioning.

It doesn't matter whether it's a VHS tape or DVD; someone must do
the captioning.

I THOUGHT THE DEAF COULD.......

hear when one speaks very loud next to his ear

a late deafened person may hear the loud voice because he
has been hearing all his life; a deaf person who has never
learned to discriminate sounds will render the loud voice
useless. Not only that, it is embarrassing, and such loud
shouting should be refrained from!

when a hearing person never meets a deaf person in his life
his knowledge of the deaf are often wrong

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Spokane Falls Community College, in Washington, will be
establishing a Peace Studies program. While it is not
totally deaf-related, input towards establishing the
program came from Deaf Studies faculty members. They
wanted Peace Studies "to focus on human rights issues
dealing with the deaf community around the world."

..

The Deaf and the Law

Location:
United Kingdom

Case:
a deaf man has been banned from entering a store because of
his loud voice while speaking

Result:
may take the case to the European Court of Human Rights

Comment:
a strange case; maybe more to it than what is seems to be?

do read it at:

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

Q. Is there such a thing as statute of limitations
on ADA-related lawsuits?

A. Good question. Some attorneys say yes; some attorneys
say no!

What became of?

Montana School for the Deaf and Blind

- past

shut down at Boulder in 1940; relocated to Great Falls

- present

the 22-acre Boulder campus is still standing but still vacant
after these 70 years! A developer recently wanted to buy the
campus to convert it to a new school of Culinary Arts. So
far it has been all talk and no action

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

M. Thomasine Hardy has been named as the new
superintendent of Eastern North Carolina School for
the Deaf. She replaces Steve Witchey.
Does she know sign language? No.

(editor's note: she only stayed on the job for a short
time and the school replaced her with another
superintendent)

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Many of us drink Miller beer; many of us drive Fords.
These two and other products had their commercials
captioned at the Super Bowl.
To satisfy our hunger pangs, many of us stop at the
KFC, and we also rent DVDs at the Blockbuster; these
two were not captioned along with other products. It
probably is a huge irony since many, if not all, of
Blockbuster DVDs are captioned!

(editor's note: pretty much sounds familiar!)

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

There was a story on the web about 40 percent of the
workforce at a computer factory being either deaf
or disabled.

This is great since deaf people are employed. But
the question is - are there opportunities for
promotion for deaf employees in that factory?

No one likes to be stuck in dead end jobs even if
they're gainfully employed.

..

A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news:

You are given half day off, with pay, so you can learn
Spanish to be able to communicate with Spanish speaking
customers.

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

the boss says:
Sergio is here and wants to see you

you thought the boss said:
Giorgio is here and wants to see you

you prepare yourself to face Sergio only to be
shocked it is Giorgio !
