This conference fields sports in football, volleyball, basketball and track. - Sunday January 10th Apple's latest hot device, that one that is activated on the screen via hand movements, was suggested as the ideal one for ASL users - Monday January 11th there was a story in a newspaper that Andrew Wong and his research team claimed that ASL users speak as fast as hearing speakers. One such bill in Maryland is requiring public TV's to show captions. This bill is up for debate on January 20th. TWO HALF-DEAF ACTORS IN A MOVIE Many years ago, famous actor Richard Widmark was deaf in one ear. Also, another famous actor Jimmy Stewart was deaf in one ear. Making it worse was that director John Ford was late deafened. Both Widmark and Stewart worked together on one movie, directed by Ford. It was confusing. In one scene, Stewart and Widmark were placed across the room. Stewart's deaf ear was opposite Widmark's deaf ear - and they could not easily communicate with each other. And they could not hear the commands by Ford! LOOKING FOR A TTY IN A HOSPITAL About 25 years ago, DeafDigest editor was visiting his mother, who was in a hospital. He needed to use a TTY to make a telephone call. There was a TTY sign on the hospital wall, but the hospital people did not know where the TTY was located. The hospital people had to make many phone calls to try to locate the TTY. The wait was about an half hour. Finally they found the TTY - but it was located in one building on the huge hospital grounds. It took a very long walk from one hospital building to another hospital building to locate the TTY. Altogether, it took about an hour. FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS REFUSING TO DEAL WITH THE DEAF We all know about these relay scams affecting financial institutions and merchants. As a result we, the deaf, face hurdles when trying to do business over the telephone. DeafDigest editor has been equally frustrated in recent weeks when trying to resolve routine issues through the telephone. They requested that the DeafDigest editor use the TTY to contact them directly. Oh, so 1960's and 1970's these TTYs are, yet these corporate headquarters doesn't get it. We use the TTY as much as they use the old fashioned typewriters! And they would not accept emails, faxes, instant messages. Just the TTY, they continue to insist. This problem will get worse before it will get better. TESTING THE WHISTLE A whistle manufacturer wanted to run tests on their latest whistle. The manufacturer said their newest whistle is the best in the world, but needed tests to prove it. Where was the whistle tested? It was at the Central Institute for the Deaf. Why would the campus of a school for the deaf be used for whistle tests? Good question, since we, the deaf, cannot hear without our hearing aids or our CI's! And not every deaf kid has either a hearing aid or a CI. A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK Q. Do deaf professionals really benefit from video relay services? A. Very certainly so. Hearing clients do not want to rely on much slower text-to-voice communications. After you have complained to your TV distributor or the TV station, then it may be time to file a complaint with the FCC. The FCC's Web site gives these instructions about what to do after complaining to the TV distributor about a problem with closed captioning: If the video programming distributor fails to respond to your written complaint or a dispute remains after the time allowed for the distributor to respond, you can send your complaint to the FCC as indicated below. There is no charge for filing a complaint with the FCC. When forwarding your complaint to the FCC, you must send an original and two copies within 30 days of the deadline for the TV distributor to respond - that is, within 30 days after the 45 day period in which the TV distributor should reply to your written complaint. Your complaint to the FCC should include a signed letter from you showing that you first sent a written complaint and supporting facts or evidence to the video programming distributor. Also, you must mail a copy of the complaint and supporting evidence that you send to the FCC to the video programming distributor (to let the distributor know you have now complained to the FCC). Supporting evidence may include videotapes, copies of schedules showing the CC logo for programming that was shown without closed captioning, or other material. An era has come to an end. The last deaf employee retired after 40 years of employment. This honor of being the last one belongs to Jim Bittner, whom basketball fans would immediately recognize. Jim, 6-6 tall, turned down collegiate basketball offers to play ball at Gallaudet, and he was notorious for his wicked elbows, keeping opposing defenders out of the way. Jim never played football. But had he joined the Goodyear plant in the early 1920's he would have been pressed into service as a member of the mighty Goodyear Silents championship semi-pro football teams. ....
