In all of his years serving the court, what was his track record in dealing with deaf/disabled issues? A deaf attorney said: Definitely overall very liberal (especially later in his career). To that extent, he was pro-disability. I don't think he came down the wrong way on any of the ADA cases that affected the deaf. But the ADA has only been around since 1990. I'll have to check his record to see how he voted on deaf cases before that. He used to be more conservative, but became more liberal as he got older. - Sunday April 11th Famous British soap opera actor Bill Roache, of the Coronation Street series that has been aired since 1960, publicly disclosed his deafness. He said because of his deafness he relies on visual cues to lead him on during these filming sessions. - Monday April 12th Famous Hollywood performer Drew Barrymore has directed her first film - Whip it, which is a story based on roller derby. Two deaf twins are one of the roller derby players in the movie; the movie reviews described it like this - they have great fun knocking each other out on the roller surface - Tuesday April 13th it was disclosed that Andy Honeysett is a pastry chef at Aria, one of these hottest, must-eat-at, restaurants in Sydney, Australia. He is deaf. - Wednesday April 14th a new bill has been proposed on the Capital Hill pushing for transparency in the federal government. The idea of this bill came from a deaf Congressional staffer, who wanted quick transcripts of committee proceedings. The deaf staffer has not been identified, though. KICKED OUT OF A RESTAURANT This is a true story. A deaf woman, who is oral, entered an ethnic restaurant in a small town. She walked to the counter to order food. There was a communication problem. The restaurant owner, an immigrant from Asia, could not understand the speech spoken by the oral woman. And also, the oral woman could not read the lips of the immigrant woman. As a result, the immigrant woman ordered the oral deaf woman out of the restaurant ! And the movie houses continue to fight us. Well, when did the first open captioned movie take place? It was "Rebellion" way back in 1947 ! Since then there have been open captioned TV shows on the 24/7 national TV network. And some of the theaters have shown in theaters on a limited basis. This is an important point because there was an on-going dialogue with a certain filmmaker that claims an upcoming film would be the first open captioned film in history. This claim is false. A PURDUE ENGINEERING TEAM The 2010 national Idea to Product Competition for Social Entrepreneurship competition is taking place this weekend at Purdue University in Indiana. The objective is for competing teams to come up with high tech products that will succeed in the market place. One of the competing teams is Animation Speaks Louder. THIS HATED "FIRST OR ONLY" SYNDROME DeafDigest just hates it when individuals try to take the credit for being the first or the only person to accomplish something. A couple of months ago it was said that an individual was the first to start an oral school in California, ignoring the fact that there have been oral schools in the state for many years. And now this - per a newspaper story: She is also the co-founder of the first oral school of the deaf in Illinois Do we believe this claim? CONFESSIONS OF A DEAF STUDENT IN LAW SCHOOL The nationwide shortage of interpreters has impacted on me; always very difficult to find interpreters for all of my law school lectures. Sometimes stenocaptioners and CART providers also make fingering errors. Because captioners do not type one key at a time, but instead they write whole words or phrases at one time, their errors look different from the errors of someone typing on a computer keyboard. If a stenocaptioner realizes that he or she made a mistake, it can be corrected immediately. The usual method for a captioner to correct an error is to hit the asterisk key, and that will delete the immediately prior stroke. However, if the captioner has already entered two or three more strokes after the mistake, it is usually too late to go back and correct it. If a captioner realizes that he or she made a mistake two or more strokes previously, what most captioners do is enter a dash stroke (--) and attempt to rewrite the wrong words. This is also the same method most stenocaptioners use to indicate a mistake or change of thought by the speaker, so you may not be able to tell if it was the captioner's mistake or the speaker's mistake.
