She, however, didn't get it as the honor went to a snowboarder. - Sunday July 11th The FCC has announced that its Disability Rights Office web site has been set up. Everything you wanted to know about your rights, but were afraid to ask, will be found on that web site. - Monday July 12th Up and coming British deaf performer Genevieve Barr has revealed a secret. Normally a hearing aid user in real life, she had to take it off while playing her role as Amelia in the TV show "The Silence." As a result she had to rely on her lipreading skills to cue her around. - Tuesday July 13th Another hospital deaf discrimination case has been settled. The Office for Civil Rights reached agreement with New York to provide equal access at its medical facilities anywhere in the state. This was prompted by discrimination that surfaced at the Ramapo Manor Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing facility - Wednesday July 14th George Steinbrenner, not deaf, who departed us last week, was a person we all either love or hate. Was he good to the deaf? Well, a deaf kid came up to him asking for an autograph at a ball game in Tampa some years back. Upon realizing the kid's deafness, Steinbrenner did something about it. Depending on which tale is accurate, he either: - paid for the kid's new hearing aid or - paid for the kid's CI Did he give jobs for aspiring deaf sports executives in his Yankees organization? No, but that is a separate issue. (Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition) ..... Deaf Miscellaneous stuff: The Charleston RiverDogs is a minor league baseball team in the South Atlantic League. This team will be featuring an advertising campaign, these 30-second shots on TV. One of these shots will feature "Sign Language." It is not ASL sign language but Baseball Sign Language (BSL). All teams use BSL to convey signals that they do not want opponents to catch. While BSL is different from ASL, it would be fun for us, the deaf, to try to catch and understand what these signs stand for. Do keep in mind these teams change BSL all the time. ............................................................... ............................................................... THE AFGHAN CUP AND OUR DEAF TOURNAMENTS The Afghan Cup is an annual soccer tournament involving 12 teams from everywhere in USA. All of these players are immigrants and refugees from Afghanistan. During the tournament, which took place last weekend in Northern Virginia, there were recruiters that were ready to offer these players jobs as Afghan language translators. In today's bad economy, it may not be surprising if some of the players accepted the job offers. We have our own national deaf basketball and national deaf softball tournaments. Do we see job recruiters at our own deaf tournaments? No. ...................................................... ............................................................... THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS AND THE DEAF We have had several deaf individuals that have operated their own restaurants. The restaurant business is a tough one for any one, no matter if the owner is deaf or hearing. One well known deaf person wanted to own a restaurant. He did one smart thing - hired a restaurant consultant. The consultant told him that the restaurant business does not fit his own lifestyle. Based on that advice, he decided not to open a restaurant. He has become a success, however, in a different business venture. THE FCC AND THE DEAF The FCC is very important to us. This being said, the FCC dynamics is always changing. FCC commissioners come and go. Some FCC commissioners are pro-deaf, meaning they favor us, the deaf, when issuing mandates. Some FCC commissioners do not always favor us, the deaf, on some of their mandates. This is why we are grateful to have a FCC Consumer Advisory Committee as well as a "deaf staff" on the FCC payroll. They are there to remind the FCC commissioners that our needs must be addressed, and not ignored. A REASON FOR CHANGE OF SEATING ARRANGMENTS IN A CITY COUNCIL We know of jokes about rival factions spending more time arguing over seating arrangements at a council meeting, rather than to argue over goals and objectives. Well, there was a reason for a change of seating arrangements at Kilgore, Texas council meetings. Normally, the council members sat at one side and the city officers sat on the other side. Well, there was a slight switch of seating arrangements. Randy Renshaw, a council member, is deaf in one ear. In the past his better ear was away from the council speaker with his deaf ear closer to it. The council members overcame their grumblings to allow Renshaw to make the seating change. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being told by a hearing person: did you know there is a new medical operation that will cure deafness? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com A LAWN CARE BUSINESS IN THE INDIANAPOLIS AREA It does not matter if the person is hearing or deaf, if that person lacks entrepreneurial spirit, he would be content to be working for someone else. But if that person is entrepreneurial, then he is not afraid to take risks while starting his own business. Andye Taylor, who is deaf, is one such entrepreneurial individual, operating his own Andys Lawn Care business. This business specializes in lawn care and snow removal, and he has people working for him. It his been in business for some six years, fanning out in the Indianapolis area neighborhoods. And like many business people, giving back to the community is important. Andye sponsors a deaf/Coda youth baseball team. DeafDigest feels every community should have more deaf-owned, deaf-operated businesses. COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series I often read articles and comments by people who really do not understand how realtime captioning is done, and they can be very critical of even minor mistakes. They sometimes cannot imagine how captioners make certain errors. What people need to understand is that captioners are using steno machines, and so their errors may look totally different from the errors made when using a typewriter. A slight fingering error can change a word into something totally different. Steno writers are basically writing "chords" on their steno machines, and it is possible to add an extra key or what steno writers call "dragging" a key. It is also possible to miss a key or what steno writers call "dropping" the letter. Many steno writers struggle with dragging the L key with the right hand. That key is depressed with the ring finger, and it can be difficult to depress keys with the middle finger and pinky finger without also dragging the ring finger. A steno writer could mean to stroke the steno APT, which is the word "apartment" for many people, and instead the steno APLT could come up, which is the word "amount" for some steno writers. If the nonsensical question, "How long did you live in the amount?" came up on the screen, it may just be a slight fingering error for the captioner or CART provider who meant to stroke, "How long did you live in the apartment?" ............................................................... ............................................................... weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com updated every Monday ............................................................... ............................................................... The Deaf and the Law: An ugly deaf prisoner denial-of-interpreter lawsuit surfaced recently in Missouri. It went like this - A deaf inmate in Prison A filed a lawsuit saying his rights to an interpreter was denied. The case was filed against Prison A. While the lawsuit was brewing, this deaf inmate, for some reason, was transferred to Prison B. The trial court threw out the case, saying since he was transferred to Prison B, then it was rendered moot. This ruling was appealed. The Court of Appeals reversed the ruling, saying the defendant should be the state Department of Corrections, and not Prison A. This suit is now live. .....
