Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. is one of the leading plaintiffs' litigation
law firms in America. The firm has played leading roles in national
and local litigations involving defective medicines and medical
devices. Our law firm is expanding its litigation against Advanced
Bionics related to defective cochlear implants implanted in young
children and adults.

Some of the firm's clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced with a
second defective implant that later failed.

If you or your child has been implanted with a defective cochlear
implant, we encourage you to contact Weitz & Luxenberg - we have a Deaf
attorney and VP available. To find out more, please click on:

Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Lillian Beard,
a 101-year old Texan who departed us. She was one
the RID founders and fought for the needs of
interpreters and the deaf all her life.

- Hot Newspaper stories during the week:

An amusing story involving the late Lee Brody, TTY magnate
http://deafdigest.com/bobbrody/

Hearing-aid user denied opportunity to become police officer
http://deafdigest.com/billfurman/

- Very Hot News

Mike Bello, who spearheaded The Learning Center for the Deaf,
Framingham, MA from a tiny school for the deaf to a huge
complex in the New England region, is stepping down next
month as the CEO.

Replacing him on an interim basis is a team of Judy Vreeland,
as the Interim Executive Director and Peter Bailey,
as the Interim Associate Executive Director.

Bello, however, is not leaving the field of deaf education;
he will assume the President Emeritus position and work
on special school projects, come this fall.

.....

Who will replace the retiring Nancy Bloch at NAD? It will
be either of the following:

- Shane H. Feldman, currently Chief Operating Officer of NAD

- Charity Reedy Hines, Director of Admissions at Gallaudet University

- Howard Rosenblum, Senior Attorney at Equip for Equality

- Darlene Goncz Zangara, CSD Senior Vice President for National
Centers of Excellence (Human Services).

May the best candidate win!

- Sunday June 13th

To allow pharmacists to communicate with the Japanese
deaf, a pictorial book, titled "The textbook on the
medicine in sign language" has been published. The
book shows signs for common medical and pharmaceutical
phrases.

- Monday June 14th

the deaf community in Michigan is getting the
impression that keeping Tom Izzo, as the basketball
coach at Michigan State University is more important
than the consequences of dropping the university's
Deaf Education Program! The battle goes on - sports
versus academics.

- Tuesday June 15th

Maybe the World Cup (soccer) is the best thing that
has ever happened to Hearing Awareness. Newspapers
are constantly harping on the issue of loudness
generated by fans' zuzuvela at these soccer venues.

We have never seen noise constantly drummed up as a
major issue during the Super Bowl, the World Series,
the Olympics, and other major athletic events.
But the use of the zuzuvela has struck our public
conscience.

Not surprisingly, sales of ear plugs skyrocketed
during this World Cup play.

- Wednesday June 16th

The Scranton School in Pennsylvania graduated its
first class. Graduations at schools for the deaf
across USA is an annual event filled with joy and
excitement.

But for the Scranton School, it was special. It
was the first graduating class for the school
that is under the auspices of Western Pennsylvania
School for the Deaf (WPSD). In the past it was
Scranton State School for the Deaf, under direction of
the state. The state transferred the program to
WPSD, and had the school renamed as Scranton School
for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Children.

(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Despite being fined by the Department of Justice last
week, the Cochlear is seeking the Food & Drug Administration

wishes to survey future CI candidates for possible

DEAF AND HEARING BEHAVIORS
There are many hearing people with bad manners.
There are also many deaf people with bad manners.
Deaf and hearing people are human beings with
faults.
Problem is that when a stranger meets a deaf person
for the first time in his life. If that deaf person
showed bad manners, this stranger will think ALL
deaf people have bad manners!

SIGNING OR GESTURING
You are walking on a sidewalk and you see two people
from far away. They are using their hands to communicate
with each other.
From far away you look at them very hard to see if
they are deaf people using ASL or if they are hearing
people just gesturing a lot with their hands.
Many hearing people speak without gestures, but
many other hearing people gesture a lot while speaking.
Can be confusing sometimes, are they deaf or hearing!

A SENATE NOMINEE IN SOUTH CAROLINA
Alvin M Greene, not deaf, won the South Carolina Democratic
nomination for the Senate.
He has no qualifications; he has no job; he has no money.
Yet he won the election and will be campaigning against a
Republican nominee this fall.
Can't happen to the deaf? It has happened to an election
for a board seat at one NAD Conference many years ago.
That person was unknown nationally and never heard of
our national deaf leaders. He won the election and served
the NAD for one term before stepping down.
How and why did he win the election? An unpopular leader
was up for reelection and they did not want that person to win
again. It was more of a vote against that unpopular leader
than a vote for that deaf political unknown.
Happens everywhere in deaf and hearing elections.

A RANDOM THOMAS A. EDISON COMMENT
From time to time there are postings on the internet
regarding the famous deaf inventor Thomas A. Edison, with
over 1,000 patents to his credit.
Here is one random comment that DeafDigest found
interesting?

He's almost deaf but most of his inventions, the phonograph and
the motion picture business, have to do with hearing

Silent films was the direct result of Edison's invention,
but unfortunately for us, the deaf, it evolved into talkies.

90dB EQUALLING 40 MPH?
At Millport, NY, a small town, not too far
from Elmira, NY, there is a sign that cautions
drivers to maintain their noise levels to
90dB or less.
At this same town, there is a sign that
restricts speed to 40 miles per hour.
Is it saying that if speeding drivers
lowered their speed to 40 mph, it will also
reduce their cars' decibel levels to 90 dB
or less?
May need a sound engineer and an audiologist
to work things out!

GALLAUDET AND THE FULBRIGHT HONORS
It seems that every year, or at least almost every
year, a few Gallaudet students apply for and in
these Fulbright grants.
Fulbright is a prestigious honor. The mission
is to promote peace via international educational
exchange.
It is not just Gallaudet; there have been
NTID students getting Fulbright grants.
Curious about Fulbright and the deaf, a
web search was conducted and it led to
155,000 results!

A HEARING CHURCH IN ENGLAND
St. Andrews is an Anglican church in Chorleywood,
England. This church had issues; the clergy felt
disconnected with the parishioners. Membership
ranks was dwindling; a lot of apathy, etc.
They decided to do something about it - and it
was establishing a mission-shaped community (MSC).
Twelve parishioners stepped forward to volunteer
their services.
In due time, the church grew in power, prestige
and with a stronger role in community affairs.
The leader of the MSC group was profoundly deaf.
She said:

I can honestly say that leading an MSC for the last eight
months has been the hardest and most challenging thing I
have ever done. I am not a brilliant administrator, neither
am I a preacher. I don't think I am a worship leader or a
kids ministry leader but I have had to do all these things.
And make difficult decisions.

The newspaper story, however, did not mention her name!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

People have to be careful not to look at realtime captioners and CART
providers as if they are machines or robots of some sort.

Occasionally a CART provider may be told to sit in a corner of a room
so that he or she won't be in the way.  Many of the speakers might
turn their backs on the CART provider as they are speaking.

What you have to remember is that if the CART provider cannot hear or
understand what is being said, he or she cannot accurately transcribe
what is being said.   It is important that the client communicate
with the CART provider about whether the CART provider should
interrupt in a situation like this.

Some people do not want the CART providers to interrupt the
proceedings.  They want CART providers to just do the best that they
can and put in parentheticals like "inaudible" or "indiscernible"
if they cannot hear or understand what is being said.

Many CART providers will not interrupt the proceedings unless they
have been instructed to do so in advance by the CART consumer because
some CART consumers want the CART provider to remain an inconspicuous
as possible.

If you are working with a CART provider and you would like
him or her to interrupt more frequently if he or she cannot hear or
understand, make sure you communicate that to the CART provider.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The much-beleaguered Microsoft is the world's richest
corporation, so rich that the total costs of educating all
the deaf children in USA is just pennies in their budget.
Yet a recent commercial of Bill Gates at the NBA championship
finals was not captioned! That from Microsoft which has
championed themselves as ultra-sensitive to the needs of
the deaf computer users!

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Happy Birthday to NTID on its 40th anniversary. NTID
director Alan Hurwitz, who has personally seen this great
collegiate institution grow by leaps and bounds over the
years, has this to say:

We just finished the ceremony in honor of Bob Frisina. It
was very nice! Forty years ago on June 14, 1965, President
Lyndon Baines Johnson signed his name on a bill to create the
NTID. That simple action forever changed the educational options
for deaf students, and the choice of RIT to host NTID has helped
the Rochester area become home to one of the largest deaf
populations per capita in the country. As plans were developed
for our new CSD Student Development Center, which will begin
construction this summer, an idea "sprouted" regarding the
opportunity to create a spacious new outdoor garden area in front
of the new CSD Student Development Center. The new garden area
will be called 'The D. Robert Frisina Quadrangle Garden at RIT'
in honor of our founding director and first vice president of RIT
for NTID, Dr. D. Robert Frisina.

(editor's note: as we all know, Hurwitz has since then moved
on to the presidency of Gallaudet University)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Is David Broughton, not deaf, going to be blamed
if many hearing people become deaf?
In fact, David has been featured in the newspaper
story which is titled:

Is this the most hated man in Britain? Businessman makes a
fortune importing vuvuzelas

......

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

Why is it that the hearing boss, aware of his employee's
deafness, would speak ever so slowly at the beginning?
His lips are so easy to lipread. But as time goes on,
he increases his speed to the point where he becomes
utterly unlipreadable.

Happens all the time.
