Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. is one of the leading plaintiffs' litigation
law firms in America. The firm has played leading roles in national
and local litigations involving defective medicines and medical
devices. Our law firm is expanding its litigation against Advanced
Bionics related to defective cochlear implants implanted in young
children and adults.

Some of the firm's clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced
with a second defective implant that later failed.

If you or your child has been implanted with a defective cochlear
implant, we encourage you to contact Weitz & Luxenberg - we have a

- Very Hot News

Expedia to the rescue of disabled travelers was what their recent
press release is all about. One example is the listing of hotels that
have equipment for the deaf. The press release is at:
http://deafdigest.com/deaftravel/

- Sunday February 14th

Is White House captioning or not captioning their
web videos? This was the complaint raised by some
deaf advocates. Some days these videos were
captioned whereas on other days these weren't.
DeafDigest is not sure why is it that?

- Monday February 15th

We had our own Deaf American, these monthly
slick deaf magazines. Not any more, but in
Japan, the Deaf Community will be receiving
their own slick deaf magazine, titled
Deaf Life Japan. It is 87- pages thick,
worked on by an all-deaf editorial staff.

- Tuesday February 16th

Stephen Dering, a deaf Briton, hoped to make
a go out of it with his employment agency,
finding jobs for the deaf and the disabled.
At first he was successful, but expanded too
fast into several nations before it crashed.
It is probably the first case of a promising
deaf international business that fell through!

- Wednesday February 17th

A contrast of two colleges in Michigan. Michigan State
University wants to shut down its deaf education program.
On the other hand, University of Michigan at Flint has
allowed ASL as a foreign language credit. Would
Michigan State University have shut it down if the
late David Stewart, eminent deaf educator, was
still alive and was around, exerting his influence?

(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)

..

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Cuba made this announcement that the disabled, the deaf
included, are guaranteed employment - only that their
150 special workshops across the island nation.
Cuba also said that "differently abled people" are
allowed to freelance and at home.

As DeafDigest looks at it, pay is so low, the same
as with hearing workers. And opportunities are limited
for the more-ambitious deaf individuals. And exactly
what does freelance and work at home mean - because
Cuba is a Communist nation.

A DEAF OWNER OF FUNERAL HOMES
When a person dies, the funeral home takes care of
everything - casket, burial, cemetery and funeral
services.
It is a very serious business because respect must
be given to the family of the deceased person.
Could a deaf person own a funeral home. Yes, we
have a deaf person - Lori Kober, of South Dakota,
and she owns two funeral home businesses. She has
been in the business for 13 years and has the respect
of hearing people in small towns in South Dakota.

CHEAP OR EXPENSIVE
Many states are broke; many school systems are
broke.
They have a hard time deciding - to hire cheap
interpreters or expensive interpreters. Also, to
hire cheap CART operators or expensive CART
operators.
A cheap interpreter and a cheap CART operator
may show low quality with many mistakes. An
expensive interpreter and an expensive CART
operator will show best quality with very
few errors.
What is the best choice? It is hard to
decide, but DeafDigest prefers expensive
interpreters and expensive CART operators
because of less errors.

INTERPRETER AT AN EVENT
There was an announcement of an event, saying
the interpreter would be available. It read like
this:

Non-Certified Interpreter, a CODA, will provide
free interpreting service

DeafDigest does not know what to make out
of this announcement. Is it the same as a
Non-Certified Barber to provide free barbering
services?
Will never know till a deaf person shows up
at the event to know if he is getting his
"money's worth."

A DEAF CORRECTIONS OFFICER
For a hearing person, working in a prison-like
atmosphere is a dangerous scene. There are many
horror stories where prisoners physically attack
their corrections officer.
That means a deaf person should not ever work
in a prison? Well, DeafDigest understands that
Lois Price, who is deaf, is a corrections officer
in one Arizona prison system.
   This is, indeed, amazing.

A YOUNG BERNARD BRAGG REMEMBERS A SHOW
Bernard Bragg, who spent a lifetime in the
entertainment world, vividly recalls a special
show way back in the late fifties.
At Backstage, a popular San Francisco nightclub,
he had his own mime performance. He worked with
singer Joanna Beretta, teaching her signs and
encouraging her to sign while singing. She
succeeded with the "One Hand, One Heart" song,
which skyrocketed her to fame in New York.
   He said:

Who am I to say that Liza Minnelli had never
been exposed to Beretta's work?

Anyway, here is a picture of Bragg's solo
mime performance that was featured in one
Life Magazine edition. The picture is at:

http://deafdigest.com/bragg/

At that time he was a full time teacher at
California School for the Deaf at Berkeley
while moonlighting as a professional entertainer.
He has since then left the teaching profession to
become a full time entertainer/actor.

We all know what early birth hearing testing is
all about? But many of us do not know what
Otoacoustic Emissions means, except for those

Well, Otoacoustic Emissions is early birth

A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK

Q. If FCC requires that relay providers be certified
to make sure that standards are met, then what is the
downside?

A. Not every relay provider is certified; to get around
the FCC certification standards, these providers become
subcontractors.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

a question like this -

can your client read lips?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

In an earlier comment, I spoke about stenocaptioners
sometimes having difficulty with "stacking." That is
when the keys from one steno stroke are not totally
released, and the keys from the next steno stroke
are depressed. One common stacking error that people
can learn to read through is when a captioner is
attempting to make a word past tense with a final
"D," and that captioner depresses an "A" in the same
stroke. Sometimes captioners end up with the words
"ad" or "add" instead of the appropriate word. Here
are some examples that may help you read through
these mistakes. "The band play ad a march." This
should be "The band played a march." "He adjust
add cable." This should be "He adjusted a cable."
Whenever you see "ad" or "add" and it doesn't
make sense, see if you can use this to help you
read through the captioning.

I THOUGHT THE DEAF COULD.......

hear like a hearing person when he puts on his hearing aid

yes and no. A hearing aid may be of a much better value to a
late deafened person or a hard of hearing person or a deaf
person capable of deciphering voices and sounds. If a deaf
person has never learned how to decipher voices and sounds,
then hearing aid only produces unintelligible noise to his
ears!

when a hearing person never meets a deaf person in his life
his knowledge of the deaf are often wrong

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Excessive usage of cell phones could be hazardous to the health
of hearing users - headaches, fatigue, etc. These symptoms afflict
approximately 20 percent of cell phone users, according to findings
at the recent Bioelectromagnetics Society symposium in Washington, DC.
Well, guess deaf people, not able to use cell phones, are the
healthier for it!

expressed its heartfelt thanks to Gus Morrison.
And it is for a list of good reasons.
Gus, who is not deaf and is not related to

mayor of the city of Fremont.
He personally helped the school relocate from
Berkeley to Fremont. Not stopping there, he
appointed Ron Stern (now superintendent of
New Mexico School for the Deaf) as the first
deaf member of a city board - the Recreation
Commission.
Still moving on, Gus helped secure funds
for the Fremont Oak Gardens, which is slated
to become a residential apartment complex
for deaf senior citizens.
For his work on behalf of the deaf, Gus
was honored recently at a school event.
Many politicians are adept in paying
lip service on the needs of the deaf.
Not Gus.

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

A story ran this week of Stanley Philander, a deaf
man in South Africa, winning nearly 12 million
dollars in power ball lottery, and having to
escape demands for money from his family
members. It was discovered that while he
had the winning number, it was for a different
drawing date, and the winner was someone else.

Well, if a hearing man won the lottery it is not
a front page news anywhere. But because it was
thought the winner was deaf, it has to be "front
page" news.

Why?

..

A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news:

You are awarded bonus pay simply for being able to
communicate in ASL.

..

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

You purchase dog food at a pet shop. Your leashed
dog is with you at the check out counter.

the clerk asks:

are you parking?

you thought she said:

are you barking?

association with the pet shop was the reason why
you thought she was asking that your dog was barking

actually the clerk was asking if you wanted your
parking lot ticket stamped and validated

if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
