At first he was successful, but expanded too fast into several nations before it crashed. It is probably the first case of a promising deaf international business that fell through! - Wednesday February 17th A contrast of two colleges in Michigan. Michigan State University wants to shut down its deaf education program. On the other hand, University of Michigan at Flint has allowed ASL as a foreign language credit. Would Michigan State University have shut it down if the late David Stewart, eminent deaf educator, was still alive and was around, exerting his influence? Deaf Miscellaneous stuff: Cuba made this announcement that the disabled, the deaf included, are guaranteed employment - only that their 150 special workshops across the island nation. Cuba also said that "differently abled people" are allowed to freelance and at home. As DeafDigest looks at it, pay is so low, the same as with hearing workers. And opportunities are limited for the more-ambitious deaf individuals. A cheap interpreter and a cheap CART operator may show low quality with many mistakes. An expensive interpreter and an expensive CART operator will show best quality with very few errors. A DEAF CORRECTIONS OFFICER For a hearing person, working in a prison-like atmosphere is a dangerous scene. There are many horror stories where prisoners physically attack their corrections officer. That means a deaf person should not ever work in a prison? Well, DeafDigest understands that Lois Price, who is deaf, is a corrections officer in one Arizona prison system. This is, indeed, amazing. A YOUNG BERNARD BRAGG REMEMBERS A SHOW Bernard Bragg, who spent a lifetime in the entertainment world, vividly recalls a special show way back in the late fifties. That is when the keys from one steno stroke are not totally released, and the keys from the next steno stroke are depressed. One common stacking error that people can learn to read through is when a captioner is attempting to make a word past tense with a final "D," and that captioner depresses an "A" in the same stroke. Sometimes captioners end up with the words "ad" or "add" instead of the appropriate word. Here are some examples that may help you read through these mistakes. "The band play ad a march." This should be "The band played a march." "He adjust add cable." This should be "He adjusted a cable." News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: California School for the Deaf at Fremont has expressed its heartfelt thanks to Gus Morrison. And it is for a list of good reasons. Gus, who is not deaf and is not related to staff member Brian Morrison, is a retired mayor of the city of Fremont. He personally helped the school relocate from Berkeley to Fremont. Not stopping there, he appointed Ron Stern (now superintendent of New Mexico School for the Deaf) as the first deaf member of a city board - the Recreation Commission. Still moving on, Gus helped secure funds for the Fremont Oak Gardens, which is slated to become a residential apartment complex for deaf senior citizens. For his work on behalf of the deaf, Gus was honored recently at a school event. Many politicians are adept in paying lip service on the needs of the deaf. Not Gus. .... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: A story ran this week of Stanley Philander, a deaf man in South Africa, winning nearly 12 million dollars in power ball lottery, and having to escape demands for money from his family members.
