Mona Lisa is a famous art painting. Her smile looks mysterious. A person sits on a chair for a long time during a painting, he will get tired. There is music to prevent the person from getting too tired. It is possible that Mona Lisa did not have music, and her "smile" is because of her tired look. Suppose Mona Lisa was deaf. A DEAF WINERY IN FRANCE The French countryside is dotted with wineries, these small mom and pop outfits that sell their wines locally. Any deaf wineries? The French deaf people would say yes, but are vague on specifics (name of town, name of winemakers, etc). DeafDigest learned of a deaf winery - in Pomport, which is a hamlet in the southwestern part of France. The deaf winery is owned by Regis Castaing and his wife Paulette. While deaf tourists are welcome to visit the winery, communication is done via gestures because he does not know the French Sign Language. DEAF ISSUES (short series; based on comments by educators and deaf service professionals) Counselors with the deaf do not compare student profiles with others, preventing them from learning from each other (end of series) WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being asked: do they understand what you are signing? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series We have seen that the writing speed of a captioner has very little to do with the couple-second delay in the captions appearing on your television screen, so you may ask: What advantage is there to having a captioner who possesses more speed? People seem to be speaking quicker and quicker all the time. The speeds of the anchors delivering the nightly news have many times been clocked at over 300 words per minute. Realtime captioners try to keep up with these speakers. Although it is not always possible, they attempt to give a verbatim account of what is being said. If the speaker is speaking at 300 words per minute and the captioner's top speed is 225, something has to give. There may be times when it becomes necessary to drop or omit some relatively unimportant word or to paraphrase a thought. One of the most important reasons for captioners to work on developing their speed is that the faster the captioner writes, the closer to verbatim the captioning output will be. ................................................................ ................................................................ weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com updated every Monday ................................................................ ................................................................
