People seem to be speaking quicker and quicker all the time. The speeds of the anchors delivering the nightly news have many times been clocked at over 300 words per minute. Realtime captioners try to keep up with these speakers. Although it is not always possible, they attempt to give a verbatim account of what is being said. If the speaker is speaking at 300 words per minute and the captioner's top speed is 225, something has to give. There may be times when it becomes necessary to drop or omit some relatively unimportant word or to paraphrase a thought. Faced with a 6-figure debt, the DCARA staged a fund raiser with Marlee Matlin as the featured entertainer. Well, at one workplace a deaf person was not bothered by a faulty fire alert strobe that flashed for much of one day.
