The Arizona Deaf Senior Citizens Coalition, Inc.
and Cardinal Capital Management both shook
hands earlier in the week to obtain funding.
It is for a proposed 75-apartment unit for
low income deaf residents in Tempe, Arizona.
Said Tom Posedly, a prime mover behind this
project:
It will be 100 percent deaf occupied only if
all of them sign up on a timely manner. This

- Thursday May 20th
Maggie Park, not deaf, will be the new
president of the South Carolina School for
the Deaf and Blind.
The board has selected her; it will just require
the approval of two state agencies, the state
Head Salary Commission and the state
Budget and Control Board. This is routine.
- Friday May 21st
On behalf of the deaf in the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts, the Disability Policy Consortium,
Inc has filed a lawsuit. The state has been
accused of not informing the deaf of updates
during emergencies.

NEVER VISITING GALLAUDET OR NTID
We know that many people that live in New York City
have never visited the Statue of Liberty. Or people
that live in Paris, France have never visited the
Eiffel Tower, etc, etc.
What about us, the deaf? There are many deaf people
that live in the Washington, DC area and have never
visited Gallaudet. Also, many deaf people in the
Rochester area that have never visited the RIT campus.

COPS AT DEAF CLUB SOCIAL EVENTS?
There was a short story in a newspaper in England
about two police officers that attended a social
event at a deaf club.
Why were the cops at the deaf club? This is
puzzling because most deaf people at club events
are well behaved while having fun socializing
with their friends.

AN ISSUE BROUGHT UP BY A GRADUATE STUDENT
We have a number of graduate programs in
Education of the Deaf. These graduates become
teachers in classes and programs for the deaf.
A graduate student, quite complaining, raised
an issue on one of these deaf education blogs.
The complaint was that these graduate
programs are ASL-oriented, meaning no focus
on needs of severely, moderately and mildly
deaf students in the classrooms !
A CELEBRITY CHEF IN GREAT BRITAIN
We watch these food shows on TV, and we know who
the celebrity chefs are. They are all hearing.
But do we have a deaf celebrity chef? Yes,
but not in USA.
The British celebrity chef that is deaf is
John Burton Race. He has appeared on a variety
of foodie shows in Great Britain and France.
No, he does not use sign language as he
functions as a hearing person.
OUR FUTURE DEAF DOCTORS AND DENTISTS
If Gallaudet and NTID both have their way,
we will be seeing an influx of deaf physicians,
deaf dentists and other deaf professionals in
the health care field.
Both institutions are joining forces
with the National Center on Deaf Health Research
and the Rochester General Health Systems to
encourage the deaf to become health care
professions.
This is great. Take Washington, DC as
an example. While we have a deaf dentist
(Dr Steven Rattner), we do not have a single
deaf physician !
Speaking of Dr. Rattner, his dental practice
ad appears in DeafDigest once a month.
MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS AND THE DEAF
A past administrator of educational programs for the
deaf made this comment regarding mental health needs
of the deaf:
A family member, that is not deaf, has mental health
issues and I've witnessed his problems in trying to obtain
professional services. But for a deaf person, it is much
more difficult to get services as opposed to a hearing person
TO BE OR NOT TO BE CREATIVE
We have many, many creative deaf individuals that
use ASL. Take a look at our long list of deaf artists,
deaf poets, deaf writers, deaf actors, etc.
This being said, it is troubling to read a newspaper
headline which says:
Operation helps open student's creative side
Below the headline is the first part of the story
Thanks to a cochlear implant in his right ear, he can now
hear almost as well as others in the class.
Is the newspaper reporter implying that only those
with CI are able to be creative? For sure we have many
creative deaf individuals with CI and also many
non-creative deaf individuals without CI!

It has become the trend for the deaf groups to
sue the state government on grounds of
discrimination.
California is the latest one. The Deaf and Hard of
Hearing State Workers United has filed a lawsuit
against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the
state on basis of not providing proper proper
accommodations according to ADA regs.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Individual will conduct advocacy activities that will ensure a higher
quality of life for its clients and promote equitable access to
health/medical, education, social, employment and legal services.
Individual will also provide communication assistance/translation services

needs is accurately met. Individual will provide accurate
identification/assessment of clients’ telecommunication needs and will
conduct appropriate equipment distribution tailored to the needs of the

Responsibilities:
This is a tenure track position for a faculty member whose primary area of
responsibility is research (at the investigator or principal investigator
level), acquisition and management of research grants, and supervision of
staff and students toward effective completion of research and related
outcomes. The focus of the research is accessibility and usability of
communication technologies by deaf and hard of hearing people. The
teaching load of this position, while it may vary depending on the
research load, is one course per year. Responsibilities include assuming
project responsibilities and management in the conduct of a grant already
underway in this department (Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on
Telecommunications Access, 2009-2014). This RERC project is a subgrant
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Trace R&D Center, and is funded
by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. For

Background:
The Technology Access Program (TAP) has been a thriving endeavor of
Gallaudet University since 1985. The program has had ongoing sponsored
program (grant) support throughout its existence, as well as support from
Gallaudet University through the faculty appointment of its director. The
program currently consists of the faculty director and 2.75 experienced
research staff, whose time is divided among three grants (the RERC on
Telecommunications Access, the RERC on Hearing Enhancement, a project of
Gallaudet’s Department of Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences; and the
Visual Languages and Learning Science of Learning Center), as well as
teaching of undergraduate courses. On average, two students per year,
usually one graduate and one undergraduate student, work in the TAP as
well. Members of TAP have received numerous awards for their contribution
to accessibility of communications. The program is highly collaborative,
interdisciplinary, efficient, and outcome-oriented. TAP is part of the
undergraduate Department of Communication Studies and the director is a

Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. with research orientation. Because this is an
interdisciplinary center, we are open to considering candidates with a
range of educational backgrounds (e.g., engineering, psychology/human
factors, management-related advanced degrees, public policy), if the

to application and meets the other qualifications.
2. Communication competence in ASL that is sufficient for
conversation is necessary to begin work in this position, and a commitment
to rapid improvement in signing skills is essential if the candidate is
not fully fluent at time of hire. Note that to acquire tenure at
Gallaudet, faculty must pass a proficiency exam in American Sign Language.
3. Evidence of strong interest in the accessibility of society to
people who are deaf and hard of hearing, and strong knowledge in this
area.

The Programs in Deaf Studies at Boston University is seeking two
full-time instructors to teach American Sign Language courses at
the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in the ASL
program which serves to fulfill the program requirements for
students in Deaf Studies degree program and to satisfy the foreign
language requirements for students in other programs throughout
the university.
Responsibilities will include teaching all levels of ASL courses
each semester and participating in the ASL laboratory. Depending
on background and experience responsibilities may include teaching
courses other than ASL. Other duties that may be included are
academic advising of major and minor students in the Deaf Studies
program, assisting in routine tasks such as scheduling of courses,
recommending adjunct faculty, and attendance at faculty meetings.
The individual will also be expected to collaborate effectively
with the Director in the Programs in Deaf Studies in curriculum
and material development and implementing program policies and
procedures.
The list of courses included in the American Sign Language program
is: ASL 1, ASL 2, ASL 3, ASL 4, ASL 5, and ASL 6.
The ASL 1-4 courses are required for students in College of Arts and
Sciences who wish to study ASL to meet foreign language requirements.
The ASL 5-6 courses are the required additional courses for students
in both the Deaf Studies and the Education of the Deaf programs.
Some of the courses in the Deaf Studies program are:
Introduction to the Deaf World, Culture and History of Deaf people,
Deaf Literature, and Structure of ASL.
Masters degree in Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Linguistics, or related
fields is required.
