DEAF AGENCY DIRECTORS Almost every city has a deaf service agency. Some deaf service agency directors are hearing; some deaf service agency directors are deaf. Makes no difference if the director is hearing or deaf. What surprises DeafDigest is that some directors "know nothing" about national deaf news that are hot. They know a lot about home town deaf news that are hot, but not about national hot deaf news. It is important that all directors keep up with national hot deaf news because it may affect their own home town deaf programs. - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/deafnews/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) ............................................................... Rehabilitation Counselor Education Western Oregon University Graduate Program Do you see yourself as a rehabilitation counselor with clients who have a disability or who are Deaf or hard of hearing? Are you a bright and motivated student who wants a M.S. degree? Would a scholarship help make this dream come true?* Western Oregon University's Rehabilitation Counselor Education program prepares Master's level counselors to work with clients who have disabilities or who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The program includes two cohorts: 1) general rehabilitation (RC) and 2) rehabilitation with a Deaf and hard of hearing focus (RCD). These two cohorts take most of their classes together throughout the two year program. The need for qualified rehabilitation counselors is at an all time high. Graduates from this program find employment in such professional areas as state vocational rehabilitation, community mental health, and other partnering agencies. The placement rate nation-wide for recent graduates is 96 - 100%. A Bachelor's (B.S. or B.A.) degree is required of all who apply to apply. Applicants to the RCD option must also be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL). *Substantial RSA scholarship support is available to qualified students contingent upon continued federal funding.* Individuals who have a disability, who are Deaf, hard of hearing, deaf blind, or who are members of traditionally underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants are being accepted now for the Fall, 2010 school year. Note: RCD applicants who are residents of WICHE states will be charged tuition at Oregon resident student rates. Those states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. FAMOUS HEARING AUTHOR OF DEAF BOOKS Few years ago DeafDigest editor was introduced to a famous hearing man who wrote a few deaf books (psychology, sociology, Deaf Culture, etc. He and the famous author sat down for a meal, and both were chatting with each other. It was a big shock to DeafDigest editor that the famous author knew very little about the deaf. The material for his books was based on heavy research, but he could not answer simple questions about deafness in general! That famous author is still traveling in USA and giving talks about deafness. DeafDigest editor does not want to tell you that person's name! - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/hearingauthor/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) EARTHQUAKE CODES AND THE DEAF All buildings in the world must comply with earthquake codes. Unfortunately these codes come at cost. Poor nations cannot afford to retro-fit their buildings to make these structures earthquake-proof. Tragically, Haiti is an example. What about us, the deaf? DeafDigest editor remembers Los Angeles Club of the Deaf (LACD) when he lived in the area for a short time in the sixties. LACD was the focal point of deaf social life in the Los Angeles area. The club shut down because the city of Los Angeles required all structures to retrofit to meet the the earthquake code. To retrofit would bankrupt the club - and so, the club building was sold. THE UGLY SIDE TO A FAMOUS MAN Warren Buffett is a famous man, the world's most successful investor. Every famous person has an ugly side. What was Buffett's ugly side? He closed down Berkshire Hathaway that provided employment to 400 textile employees. Many of these employees became deaf over the years because of the plant noise. Buffett refused to face them in person, and for that, they called him heartless. DEAF PHARMACISTS, HEARING PHARMACISTS We have a number of deaf individuals that are employed as pharmacists. The field of pharmacy has changed drastically for the past 15 years. Some may confuse pharmacists as physicians. Things pharmacists do these days were not what they were doing years ago: - giving shots - health screening tests - health counseling - dispensing with medical advice Do deaf pharmacists perform the same duties as hearing pharmacists or are they stuck behind the counter filling these prescriptions or do they go out in the front and interact with worried hearing patients? A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK Q. What advantage would video relay services have over traditional relay services? A. Touch-tone systems and voice recognition systems are not possible via traditional relay services. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being challenged with this challenging question: I counted the number of gestures you made and tried to match it with the words and noticed you do not gesture every spoken word. Do you deliberately leave out words while interpreting? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Some people have asked if captioners are ever asked to cover assignments at the last minute, with little or no time to prepare. The answer to that is, yes, it happens because of illness, equipment failure, emergency news coverage, and many other reasons. Hopefully, the captioner will have some familiarity with the assignment because he or she captioned a similar or related assignment before. When 9/11 happened, captioners were captioning across the country "by the seat of their pants." Many had never encountered "al-Qaeda" or many other related terms in their work before. Also, many brand-new, in-training captioners were thrown on the air at that time because of the round-the-clock news coverage. The experienced captioners just couldn't keep going 24 hours a day. Recently, we have seen expanded news coverage and special programs related to the tragic earthquake in Haiti, and captioners have had to step in to cover those assignments. ................................................................ ................................................................ weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com updated every Monday ................................................................ ................................................................ Hot DeafNews boring, but important! In the case of the tragic Haiti earthquakes, are we seeing a Nero that fiddled while Rome burned? This is in reference to the Royal Caribbean yacht that docked at a port in Haiti in midst of the earthquake bedlam. What about it? Adam Goldstein, the Royal Caribbean CEO, defended the docking of his yacht. It is the same Adam Goldstein that thumbed his nose at deaf tourists desperate for interpreters while on cruises. While he acknowledges the ADA regulations on cruises that start or end in USA, he thumbs his nose at cruises that originate outside of the American boundaries. .. DeafADA Issue of the Week: the article above addresses these ADA issues, too! http://deafdigest.com/legalrights/ .. The Captioning Blunder of the Week: Obama worked at the Soup Kimpen (Kitchen) .... What became of? News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: Larry Puthoff, the former superintendent of the South Dakota School for the Deaf and now with the Communication Service of the Deaf, is working on a huge project - a book on the history of the deaf in South Dakota. The DEAFDIGEST editor is going to ask for a copy of that book once it is completed. .. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: The most thrilling aspect of the Martin Luther King Day, as far as we, the deaf, are concerned was the showing of a PBS film documentary about him. Why was it thrilling? Because it was open captioned. Is it a big deal that it is open captioned? Not really because we take captions on TV for granted. What is the big deal is that the film was borrowed from the library of Captioned Films for the Deaf! That film is an oldie, but the MLK story is not an oldie. .... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: A deaf person who watches videos a lot, said: I got the feeling that some people think subtitles and captions are the same. In my opinion, they are not the same. A subtitled movie only shows the script, without background noises. You, as the viewer, have to figure it out. On the other hand, open/closed captioning provides the scripted material as well as the background info. Many DVDs may say either captioned or subtitled. Many times I've clicked on "subtitled" expecting only scripted words, but I actually get captioning. While on other times I click on captioning and only get subtitled script. Many times I've had to turn off the DVD subtitle/captioning and let the TV do it. Sometimes the DVD is captioned without having to turn on the subtitles. As far as I can tell, there is no set standard. You have to hope you at least end up with one or the other. Having one or the other is certainly much better than nothing at all. I believe the industry is blurring the difference between the two. .. A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news: You are allowed to close a case in which a customer has used very fool and unprofessional language, the kind that would make even a seasoned sailor cry. .. A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say? The boss calls in a deaf employee for a short conference. You think the boss says: Pam is old You are puzzled because Pam is not that old in age Actually the boss says: Pam is cold it has something to do with a request from Pam for a switch of her offices, from a cold atmosphere to a warmer atmosphere, and the boss was asking the deaf employee if he would agree to a switch. if you have lipreading tales, please share these with mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- * YOU COULD PLACE YOUR PAID EMPLOYMENT ADS IN THIS SECTION * on a per-subscriber basis, the DeafDigest ad rates are the best in the nation. * For more information, send E-mail to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- position opening Team Leader Center for Hearing & Deaf Services, Inc.
