Alexa Posny, assistant secretary, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, earlier this week. She observed
how things operate at a state school for the deaf. Said

Because the state of Minnesota is broke, the state
Department of Human Services had to cut back. As
a result, the Rochester Service Center has been
closed. It was part of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service Center branches.
- Monday October 18th
Deaf leaders within the Gambia Association of the Deaf
went through a 10-day leadership training by representatives
of the World Federation of the Deaf. They were taught of
ways to empower themselves as first class citizens.
- Tuesday October 19th
a warning has been issued by the Directorate General of Health Services in India regarding lack of iodine in the diet. Deafness was mentioned as one of the causes of
lack of iodine.
- Wednesday October 20th
Judy P. Mohan has been appointed as the manager of the
Apache ASL Trails housing for Deaf seniors in Tempe, Arizona.
She is deaf and has been a long time teacher and sign
language instructor, and has been active in the Phoenix
Deaf Community.

A CODA'S AUDIOLOGY EXAM
This is a true story. A Coda was required to take an
audiological exam for a job he was applying for.
The Coda grew up as a hearing person, had many hearing
friends and sometimes volunteered as interpreter for his
deaf parents and deaf family members.
The result of the audiological exam told him he was
hard of hearing, not hearing.
This Coda was very shocked because he had no problems
with his hearing.
He took the exam at the Costco hearing aid center.
Maybe he should have taken the exam at an audiological
clinic instead of at Costco?

AN IRONY WITH LOVE IS NEVER SILENT MOVIE
"Love is never Silent" was one of the best
deaf movies that was shown on television during
the eighties.
This movie, starring deaf actors Ed Waterstreet and
Phyllis Frelich, was captioned.
What was the irony? That movie was run on television
few years ago - and it was NOT captioned!

A TELEPHONE FOR THE DEAF
What is a telephone for the deaf? All of us would
say the TTY. This is correct.
But there is another answer. It is the fax machine!
INCIDENTS WITH GESTURE-IMPAIRED WAITERS
Last week's DeafDigest mentioned gesture-impaired
hearing individuals.
Here are three incidents that involved gesture-impaired
waiters.
- asking the waiter to please box the meal to bag it home;
instead he threw away the meal
- asking the waiter for a sauce; instead he brought
a piece of toast
- pointing to the menu on the wall; instead, the waiter
laughed hard
In each of these incidents, easy-to-follow gestural
signs were used, only to have the waiters mess it up.

CONFESSIONS OF A FACULTY PRE-MED ADVISOR
This comment, below, is interesting, and here it is:
Twenty years ago, while serving as a faculty pre-med advisor at Harvard
College, I was assigned a candidate for medical school admission: a
graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, an outstanding student, a
basketball player, personable, and impressive in every way. He was a
"dream" candidate with one exception:
He had been born deaf. Our efforts to gain his admission to medical school were a nightmare.
Despite personal communications to medical school deans and admission directors, as well as letters from his professors attesting to his abilities, all doors were closed.
He entered a Ph.D. program in pathology at the University of
Pennsylvania and, following postdoctoral training at the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), now does exciting research in the field of
congenital deafness.
Has this situation improved because of ADA? We do, however, have
a number of deaf physicians in USA.
A NEW CERT MEMBER
We have a number of deaf members of Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in some jurisdictions across USA.
We again have many deaf people that want to join the
CERT but are discriminated against because of their deafness
and the unwillingness of the CERT officials to give them
opportunities.
Well, in Houston, Texas, Nicole Zatzkin, who is deaf,
has become a CERT member. She was able to be trained and able
to help the deaf in situations of need.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Have you ever seen a captioning error and said, "Wow, that's
funny"? Or have you been angry or annoyed?
When a television broadcast or an event is being captioned "live,"
mistakes are going to happen. Realtime captioners are only human,
and even if they caption with 99% accuracy, that still means that
there will be 1 word out of 100 that will be wrong.
It is important that we educate ourselves on what an acceptable
amount of mistakes would be and realize that those may not be able to
be avoided. However, we must also be aware of what is unacceptable
captioning. If there are too many errors, it definitely is not
humorous, and it should be reported to the people in charge of the
captioning.
If you are watching a television show that is not being broadcast
"live" and has been prerecorded, that is a different story. There
should not be any errors in the captioning. The time should be taken
to correct any captioning errors before the show is broadcast.
Unfortunately, to save money, some broadcasters allow captioning
errors on shows that are prerecorded. Complaints should be made to
the people in charge.
Let the broadcasters know that someone is watching the captioning.
Give them feedback for great captioning as well as poor captioning.
Even if they may not seem responsive, it helps to let them know that
people do care.
STRUGGLES AT A HEARING COLLEGE
A posting on a deaf yahoogroup was interesting. It said:
I went through note takers, CART, amplification devices, oral
interpreters, sign language interpreters. The college was not
cooperative with my needs and I had to fight to get what I
needed.
DeafDigest stresses that Gallaudet, NTID and CSUN are options
as opposed to hearing colleges.

What: A national study for counselors who serve the Deaf funded by
AHRQ
Why: Counseling and behavioral health services for persons who
are Deaf, Deaf-blind or hard of hearing are scarce, and many
individuals are underserved. We hope to learn and share the results
with all who provide counseling services across the nation
If you are a counselor please take the time to complete the survey or
if you know counselors in your region who work with this population

The questionnaire takes about 30 minutes to complete. After completing
the survey, the respondent will receive a small token of appreciation

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
Dr. Johnny Benjamin, on behalf of the Association of Boxing Commissions' Mixed Martial Arts Medical Subcommittee, had to say about deaf fighters:
Deafness, equilibrium and concussions (knockouts) have little, if any,
significant relationship. Deafness is a loss of hearing, not balance. The inner ear has some function in both hearing and equilibrium, but they are very separate issues. furthermore, what any of this has to do with an athlete's ability to withstand a blow to the head is difficult to understand. Concussions are an issue involving brain function and not the inner ear and/or vestibular apparatus. There is not a shred of reputable medical literature that even suggests that deaf athletes are more susceptible to concussions than any
other athlete.

A deaf person owning a carpet/rug manufacturing plant.

Who are these deaf Americans? Whoa, let us backtrack.
These three deaf individuals are Iranians. They were in
attendance at Gallaudet Department of Business 50th
anniversary gala that took place on October 20th.
These three deaf Iranians say that they have many hearing
employees under their watch and that it is no big deal,
also saying that there are many other deaf owned businesses
in Iran.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
A deaf employer of a high tech firm said:
I prefer to hire deaf person over hearing person.
Unfortunately, most deaf candidates are not qualified enough for these job positions compared to hearing candidates. What frightens me is that most deaf
candidates are not trying hard to get themselves
updated with new knowledge that would keep them
more competitive over hearing candidates.
as a result, the hearing gets hired and the deaf
scream "discrimination"

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
DeafDigest editor sat down for a meal at a
Mexican restaurant, at the same time the Chilean mine rescue was taking place.
The waiter said something like this:
25 minors are out
25 minors out? Drinking age raised to 25 and
"minors" under 25 cannot order alcoholic drinks????
it was then realized, about 5 minutes later, he
was talking about the mine rescue and was really
saying:
25 miners are out

Position summary: This full-time position is responsible for coordinating and implementing community outreach activities designed to promote Captioned Telephone Service (CapTel®) for Tennessee Relay Services (1/2 time) and in other states as needed (1/2 time). Individual will be required to travel within the state of Tennessee and other states as needed.
Preferred education, experience and skills:
- Excellent presentation skills - Prior work experience with the user communities that can benefit from relay services:
- Senior Community
- Hard of Hearing Community
- Knowledge of and ability to understand various communication modes used by current and potential relay users
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people who have differing hearing and speech abilities and communication modes
- Ability to promote all relay services and to educate/train users of the services
- Direct work experience with Telecommunication Relay Service or experience with Captioned Telephone Service is helpful
- Experience in public relations - Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively and meet deadlines - Strong interpersonal skills, writing, and analytical
