The statement was to reject the infamous 1880 Milan resolution that "banned" sign language as mode of instruction in classrooms all over the world. And to acknowledge, with regret, on how bad the resolution was, and to ask all nations to respect all forms of communications. Apology was not mentioned in the statement. Yet, elated deaf groups have been using this statement as an apology. Oh, by the way, the resolution should have never been made in the first place, years ago in 1880. - Sunday July 18th Within the Pathological, Audiological, and Medical professionals that work with the deaf, there was a conference many of us did not know about. It was the Coalition for Global Hearing Health that took place recently in Washington, DC. A 3-WAY JOB INTERVIEW What is a 3-way job interview? Few years before ADA became law, a deaf man came up for a job interview. There were no notes during the interview. Two human resources (HR) people interviewed the deaf man. The first HR man had lips that were impossible to read. The second HR man was easy to read with his lips. But, that first HR man could understand the deaf speech. The second HR man could not understand deaf speech. As a result, the interview went 3-way in a circle. According to historians, Edward Miner Gallaudet and Alexander Graham Bell pretty much did not like each other. This is understandable. Bell advocated oral education whereas Gallaudet supported ASL. There was a patent infringement lawsuit going on in the late 19th century - Western Telephone Construction Company sued Bell Telephone Company. On one side was Alexander Graham Bell's phone Company, the Bell Telephone Company. On the other side was the Western Telephone Construction Company. Part of the law team representing the Western Telephone Construction Company was Joseph G. Parkinson. Not only he was deaf but was a Gallaudet graduate, class of 1869! Bell won the lawsuit. DEAF-OWNED BUSINESSES, USA AND EUROPE In USA, we have a good number of deaf-owned businesses, both full time and part time. What about Europe? DeafDigest editor does not know of too many deaf-owned businesses. A big exception is Hotel Hassler in Rome, owned by Roberto Wirth. There are much more restrictions in Europe, for anyone, deaf or hearing, that want to open a business. It is much easier in USA to start a business. NASA WAS WRONG ABOUT ITS ASL MESSAGE FROM SPACE DeafDigest editor received email from NASA saying that astronaut Caldwell Dyson was the first one to sign ASL from space. This event took place this week. NASA was wrong. Way back on January 22, 1992, on the Discovery mission, astronaut Bill Readdy signed ASL from space, and it was videotaped and shown on Deaf Mosaic. Doing the honors of teaching Readdy ASL was Texas VR counselor Jack Clifton. This is another example of "it is the first" or "it is the only" syndrome being foisted on the Deaf Community. For example, the ring finger of the left hand can depress the T key on the top row or "bank" of keys or the K key on the bottom row of keys. If the captioner depresses both of those keys at the same time by hitting the crack between the two keys, the letters T and K will both appear, and when those two keys are combined together, they become a D in steno. Since many steno writers start off as court reporters, they learn short forms for many legal terms. A common way to write the word "testimony" in steno is TEFT. Another common word for court reporters is "defendant." A common way to write that word in steno is TKEFT, which is seen by a steno writer as DEFT. Even though the words "testimony" and "defendant" do not sound at all alike, you may see mistakes like these by captioners or court reporters: "The testimony is sitting at the counsel table with his attorneys." "He was sworn, and he gave his defendant in a straightforward manner." As you can probably tell, these should read as follows: "The defendant is sitting at the counsel table with his attorneys." "He was sworn, and he gave his testimony in a straightforward manner." TIMES HAVE CHANGED FOR INTERPRETERS Years ago, the most important piece of material for sign language interpreters was a map tacked on the wall of the metro area. Interpreters, getting an assignment in an unfamiliar area, would locate the address on the map and go from there. Times have changed. They are saying the mutation, named DIAPH3, causes some kind of deafness. This finding was recently shared with the National Academy of Sciences. .... The Deaf and the Law: A deaf man, with an exaggerated sense of entitlement, asked the court to grant him leniency for his series of petty crimes. He said: I am single, a simple farmer and am deaf. News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: Honors continue to come Bob Davila's way. At the International Congress on Education of the Deaf, Sydney, Australia with over 1,000 educators in audience, Bob delivered the opening keynote address. This NTID director was the only deaf plenary speaker in a group of ten such speakers. He spoke on "Reviewing the Past, Assessing the Present and Projecting the Future." Upon coming home, Bob was voted in as vice chairperson of the board of directors of the Hillside Children's Center, a program for children and families in need of professional counseling. Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: Pretty much a hot conversational topic in many deaf groups all week was the ICED rejection of the infamous 1880 Milan resolution that "banned" sign language in classrooms. Many, many, many orally-educated deaf children grew up to become ASL signers during these years of sign language oppression. They learned their signs behind the teachers' backs and at "underground" sites away from the prying eyes of anti-ASL teachers. So, was the infamous 1880 Milan resolution rendered moot the first day it "became" effective? Yes, DeafDigest thinks so, because those that wanted to sign, did, whereas those that did not want to sign, didn't. Edict and personal preference are two different things. ..... A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say? If you are shopping for food within Washington, DC city limits, you need to lipread the check out cashier. The cashier will ask: do you want a plastic bag? If you say no, you save 5 cents. If you say yes, you pay 5 cents per bag. Not a big deal, except that if your mind wanders while paying for your food, the check out cashier will be puzzled why you did not respond with a yes or a no answer, and the line behind you gets longer and gets more impatient. A hearing mind can wander but his ears do not wander!
