Top News of the Year (January through June) January The Illinois state government was accused of hiring "sign language applicants" and paying them $211 per month for these skills, which they never had in the first place February Mark S. Kite, Sr, a deaf man, was appointed as Deaf Chief of a hearing volunteer fire department at Yukon Volunteer Fire Company, located in the metro Pittsburgh area March John West, a deaf man, became the new mayor of March, a town within the Fenland District Council in Great Britain April AgBell vs Audism Free America (AFA) battle took place on the AgBell grounds. The newspapers pretty much ignored this clash. The AFA group then shouted anti-AgBell chants, before dispersing. May Scranton State School for the Deaf falls under the control of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. June Spain would not allow the deaf to vote during the European Union elections (the Gold edition will list the top July through December news) .. Hot Deaf News during the week: - Very Hot News The changing of the guard at Gallaudet University is coming up real soon. DeafDigest wishes to thank outgoing president Bob Davila for a job well done - meaning restoring Gallaudet to its state of normalcy. DeafDigest editor spotted Bob at a Gallaudet basketball game and asked him if he was retiring for good or if he would look for another endeavor to pursue. Bob gave the editor a special glint in his eye and just smiled, saying nothing! - Sunday December 20th A medical center in Oklahoma only charges $8,000 for a CI operation, a big time bargain as compared to a $100,000 CI surgery. This story surfaced in the news. The medical center CEO said the facility operates at cost, with no mark up. - Monday December 21st A mother of a deaf child, living on the island of Guernsey, part of the British Crown, won her battle in the court room. She put up a fence behind her home to fence in her deaf son for his protection. The Housing Authority ordered her to tear down the fence and she refused. The Authority sued but the judge sided with the mother. - Tuesday December 22nd Rapport is the name of the Deaf Cake in Japan! Actually it is a cake shop located at one of the Tokyo railway stops. All 8 employees in the cake shop are deaf. Hearing patrons write down their orders or use the touch panel. The shop has been open for business since 2003. The company headquarters communicate with Rapport via faxes and emails. - Wednesday December 23rd It was reported that Matt Hamill, our deaf UFC fighter, was badly beaten by illegal blows by Jon Jones, but won via disqualification. Jones, who originally accepted the disqualification loss, had second thoughts and filed an appeal with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. A HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM NIGHTMARE A deaf man went to the hospital emergency room, needing medical attention. No interpreter was available. At the same time, a hearing woman brought her deaf husband to the operating room. The emergency room receptionist saw the hearing woman signing to her husband, and immediately used her as the interpreter for the other deaf man. He is on call if there is an emergency at his job. If he is driving and he gets a beep, he must pull over the road to read the pager. A hearing person, hearing the beep, can use his Bluetooth headset to get the emergency message while still driving. Is handwriting now considered old fashioned? We type out our words and texts instead of writing these out. How important is handwriting to the deaf? Well, we use the notepad to communicate with the hearing. And if the hearing person struggles with his handwriting to compose their responses, then it could be frustrating. DeafDigest editor has often had to wait as long as 5 minutes for a slow-writing hearing person to compose a short, simple sentence! And as a contrast, it may take 5 seconds for a hearing person to voice out this same short, simple sentence! DEAF NEW ZEALAND, REVISITED Last week's DeafDigest mentioned a newspaper article as follows: He was found in the car park of Deaf New Zealand in Great North Rd next to the Avondale police station Deaf New Zealand as in a park or a town or a neighborhood? It was puzzling. Several subscribers sent emails to DeafDigest editor with explanations. "Deaf New Zealand" means Deaf New Zealand Association, as a way of abbreviations used by newspaper reporters. STARBUCKS SCENE #1 A deaf man, obviously a regular patron, goes into Starbucks and gestures his usual order of coffee. Since all the baristas know him. communication issues are non-existent. DeafDigest editor, who did not know that deaf man, was reading his newspaper while drinking his coffee at one Starbucks location and saw his gesturing. Just as when the deaf man was headed out the door with his coffee, one of the baristas, working in the backroom, was told that he was around. She suddenly ran towards him and practiced her ASL on him. Her ASL, unfortunately, was not the best in the world! STARBUCKS SCENE #2 An administrator of a local interpreting agency walked into Starbucks to pick up her coffee. She has learned a lesson - never go into idle chatting with some of these baristas - telling them she operates an interpreting agency. Some of these baristas are ASL students, and suddenly upon learning of the interpreting agency administrator, would ask for interpreting jobs! They would ask for these jobs even when their ASL, unfortunately, were not the best in the world! Since Congress passed the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the FCC gradually phased in closed captioning requirements, and in January of 2006 100% of all new English-language programming was required to be closed captioned. Different closed captioning schedules have applied to new programming, programming first aired before January 1, 1998, and Spanish-language programming The FCC has been phasing in Spanish closed captioning, and they will require 100% of new, non-exempt Spanish-language programming to be closed captioned as of January 1, 2010. News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: Doug Pravda, now attending Harvard Law School, has accepted an offer to serve as law clerk in the office of Judge Amalya Kearse, US Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit. This 2nd Circuit is considered to be one of the most powerful and most prestigious courts in USA - fielding appeals from cases in the New York, Vermont and Connecticut region - and is a notch below the Supreme Court. He is the 7th deaf person to serve as clerk for a Federal judge and the 5th to clerk for an Appeals Court Judge. Others in the exalted company were Bonnie Tucker, Phil Gordon, Dawn Leporati, John Stanton, Michael Schwartz and David Lupi-Sher. .. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: If not for the efforts and generosity of Donnie Walsh, a certain athlete from Indiana would not be in Australia to take part in the Deaflympics. This athlete was employed at the fieldhouse where the Indiana Pacers play. Donnie, the Pacers' president, learned of fund raising problems of his deaf employee. Donnie staged a fund raising event. And at the end of the event, the funds were still short. What did Donnie do? Simply dipped into his pockets to make up the shortfall! Thank you, Donnie. ....
